Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Maxell DSR-I Pro Disc FixerCustomer Review: works well, but beware of repair fluid leaking Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this at a local retail store and really liked it. The problem was, that when I opened the package, the repair fluid had leaked into the accessory area in the back of the unit. The repair fluid tube appeared to be sealed, but it came right out of the bottom of the tube where it is supposed to be crimped and sealed. I was worried that the fluid leaked inside the unit and might have damaged the motor. I decided to give it a try and see how I liked it before exchanging the unit. It worked VERY well, so I took it back to the store and exchanged it for another unit. When I got home and opened the package, I found the exact same problem with the repair fluid. Soooo, back to the store I went, although this time, I insisted that the store open the package before I left. They again found the exact same problem with the repair fluid tube. After having tried 3 packages of the same model, I gave up and decided to exchange it for a different brand. I don't remember the name of the second brand, but it only cleaned 3 discs before I hear an awful sound and the unit stopped spinning the disc. It spun fine as long as there wasn't a disc in the unit, but when I added a disc, it made terrible noises. So I returned that one as well and finally tried the Memorex OptiFixPro. In my opinion, the Memorex doesn't do anything to really fix discs at all; it just cleans them. I will be returning the Memorex unit and I will call Maxell Customer Service to see if they can do anything to ensure I get a unit that doesn't have the leakage problem.
To summarize, I have now tried 3 different brands of disc repair kits and this one does the best job of repairing discs. Also, I liked that the unit allowed me to clean one disc on one side of the unit while simultaneously repairing a second disc on the opposite side. I have not found any other repair kit that allows two discs at once. However, I think that Maxell had some quality control issues or manufacturing issues that allowed these units to be sent out with leaking repair fluid tubes, so I would definitely recommend that you only but this unit from a respectable retailer that allows exchange or refund without hassles in case you encounter this same problem (and be aware that with some retailers, you may need to pay shipping charges to send the unit back for exchange).
Customer Review: Nice Little Fixer Summary: 4 Stars
I have tried it on 4 disk so far. It works pretty well. Got small scratches and cd played much better. One CD I had was pretty scratched up (had been in my car console too long) and although I tried it twice not all the scratches came out and CD still skips. BUT for a few, not so deep scratches this works great. Also convenient because all the disk and cleaners are stored within the unit. You do have to switch out the cleaning heads 3 times for a complete polish/repair/clean, but it only take about 3 minutes for each cycle so total cleaning time per disk is about 15 minutes.
Customer Review: Nice little fixer Summary: 4 Stars
I use this all the time. I have four children who are always getting their discs scratched up. Isn't going to fix a really bad scratch but it does a pretty good job. Another thing I really like about this model is that it will repair and clean the little mini discs like those for the Game Cube. Most of the ones out their won't fit those little guys. You do have to change the right side from repair pads to the polishing pads, but the left door takes care of the cleaning so you don't have to mess with that pad.
Customer Review: Good Product Summary: 4 Stars
Works pretty well. Needed to run the process several times to fix my discs but they do work now. If you are doing more than one disc at a session, switching the pads can be annoying. Good product overall though
Customer Review: Suitable throw-a-way tool Summary: 3 Stars
Maxell DSR-1 Pro Disc Fixer is "Professional" in title only. If it breaks after the 90-day warranty don't bother to try and repair it. It works OK but has manufacture quality issues. Tube of repair fluid leaks from the dispenser tube crimp and solidifies plugging the dispenser hole (use a toothpick or needle to clean), the storage compartment door latch is flimsy and won't latch (fold some paper and insert to expand the latch and make it work), the unit can only run for 30 minutes continuous operation (10 CD/DVDs) and Maxell doesn't say what the motor cooldown time is so you don't burn it out. Amazon was really fast in delivery and price was good which compensated for the poor machine quality. For an inexpensive unit, it does an OK job (does clean well) but definitly is not worth the MSRP of $69.95. Salvage of 4 or 5 CD/DVDs with this device you got your money ROI back. Repair mode leaves the CD/DVDs dull (they work OK) so don't use it on rented/borrowed items or you may be charged for damage/or loose a friend. I would not recommend it as a gift unless the recipient understands the product limitations. Unless it breaks before the 90-day warrranty is up, I'll keep it.
