Customer Review: Best Disk Cleaner/Repair Available + Great Value
Summary: 5 Stars

I researched disk cleaners and repair thoroughly before buying the Maxell DSR-1, and this unit is the best by far. I compared this unit head to head with Skip Dr. and Aleratec and both were total junk compared to the Maxell. I'll report some of what I found in my research and then about the Maxell DSR-1:

SKIP DR. REPAIR UNIT: is poorly constructed and they don't have a combo unit so you need to buy a repair unit and a cleaning unit separately. The repair unit severely scratched my test disk, creating huge starburst type scratches from the center to the edges of the entire surface of the disk. Plus, their repair unit doesn't even buff. You have to do that manually with a cloth!! So I'm supposed to strain and waste my time buffing out all those pretty scratches their unit created with a cloth? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of an "automated" product?? And the buffing cloth was useless anyway cuz the scratches the unit created were far too deep. Not to mention, if you use this unit on a rental disk, the video store will probably charge you for mangling their disk.

SKIP DR CLEANING UNIT: is equally a piece of junk. It's supposed to eject the disk after cleaning but it doesn't. The disk just keeps spinning and spinning forever. Both Skip Dr. units run on batteries, so be prepared to spend extra money on that too. And you know as batteries die down, the cleaning and repair units will be less and less effective, so you'll have to replace batteries often. Don't bother with Skip Dr. unless you want to destroy disks, waste time, waste money on batteries and waste space on 2 inadequate units.

ALERATEC: was better than Skip Dr but you have to change wheels every time you want to repair, polish or clean. So where do you keep all those parts and cleaning fluids when not in use? And from what I've seen, refills are almost as expensive as the unit itself! And neither the unit or refills are readily available anywhere except online.

THE WINNER:

MAXELL DSR-1: by contrast the Maxell DSR-1 cleans, repairs and buffs. In fact, you can clean one disk while repairing another all at the same time! The Maxell is a 2 sided vertical unit, with cleaning on 1 side and repair/buff on the other. It also has a nifty storage compartment in the back that holds an extra cleaning wheel, cleaning fluid, repair fluid, a cloth and 2 buff wheels when not in use. You do have to swap the repair/buff wheels if doing a full repair. But at least you have somewhere to store the extra wheels when not in use. The storage compartment also has a cleaning sheet to record how many times you've used the wheels. Unlike the previous 2 models above, the Maxell is rated for 100 uses for each wheel. And having a place to easily check off each use makes it easy to keep track of when a replacement wheel is needed. They only give you one sheet though so I made copies and am using one sheet for each clean, buff and repair wheel, that way I'll have an accurate record. None of the other units had this. Apparently you're just supposed to remember on your own. Not to mention, the refills for the Maxell were only $6 for an entire replacement kit of 2 wheels each for clean, repair and buff, 1 bottle each of cleaning and repair fluid and another cloth. The Maxell also runs on an AC adapter, so there's no need for batteries. That combined with the inexpensive refills make this the cheapest unit to use over the long run. Some other reviewers said this unit doesn't clean the outer part of the disk - well, for my experience, that's not the case at all. The repair/buff function also works very well. If the disk isn't that bad, you can just buff or you can do a full repair/buff. The unit doesn't scratch the disk like Skip Dr did, but it does leave the disk looking hazy. But that doesn't affect playback and it did successfully fix unplayable disks I tried. Also, it's unlikely a video store would notice you repaired/buffed their disk, so there's no danger of being charged for damaging a disk as with Skip Dr. And the Maxell is fully automatic with 3 minute cycles that stop when each procedure is done.

All told, the Maxell DSR-1 cleans and repairs disks very well and far out performs all other units!! This is easily the best disk clean/repair/buff unit out there!

Customer Review: The Maxell DSR-1 Pro Disc Fixer WORKS!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Maxell DSR-1 Pro Disc Fixer

First off it is a large unit that looks like it is ready to do something and do it right. Compared to other automatic cleaning/repairing units, the DSR looks rugged and capable. Looks good just sitting on the shelf too!

A disc can be repaired on the right side while separately and independently cleaning a disc on the left side. Both sides operate independently meaning that one side does not run just because you are using the other side.

In operation the unit stays in place and won't mar your desk top thanks to an elastic ring around its base .

Behind the scenes there are a couple valuable features: Two little soft rollers inside each of the two lids help keep the proper pressure applied upon the disc label side so the cleaning surface does the best job possible without damaging the disc.

Unlike some of the other automatic cleaners I have used, the timer actually works! It absolutely turns on when you turn it on and absolutely turns off when the cycle is, or should be, over. Creating an electric timer circuit shouldn't have to be rocket science, but I guess to some it is.

In addition to the cleaning disk and the sanding or repairing disks installed in the machine, there is conveniently located in the rear of the case an easy open easy close door which stores the polishing disks, an extra cleaning disk, a bottle of Cleaning Solution (Isopropyl Alcohol), a tube of Repairing Solution, and a washable Polishing Cloth.

Does it WORK? In a word, Yes. If you have severely damaged discs, then you are probably going to need to buy a new disc, but for normal wear and tear, even that data blocking scratch that came from nowhere will be removed and the disc will look good and play well.

After the sanding or repairing step, the underside of the disc looks quite finely swirled. I mean Quite Finely. Step two Polishes the disc surface and leaves it quite cloudy looking but it looks quite promising. Place the disc into the left cleaning side of the unit and when it comes out you should be quite pleased. The surface will likely be free of scratches and smudges. The surface does not look like the virgin clear plastic on a new disc, but ends up looking very very slightly cloudy. Certainly you should have no problem what so ever from your video rental outlet for having screwed up their disc. In fact in my opinion, you are doing them a huge favor!

If what you want is a perfect super high quality, crystal clear, as good or better than new appearance to your disc, then you are spending WAY too little on this machine. You need to shell out several hundred to a couple thousand dollars for a commercial use machine using a "Wet Repair" system.

Get it. Odds are good that you will be pleased with your results.

Customer Review: Not Perfect But Darn Close!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have purchased two of these Maxell Pro Disc Fixers so far, one for myself from a discount store (still cranking along, working fine) and the other as a gift recently for my stepson. I have to say that if you are like me, and do a lot of renting from video stores or libraries and you are tired of having DVD's freezing up on you or tiling, this "Fixer" is Fantastic.

As you may already know, the left door (yellow wheel) is for cleaning the disc and the right door is for polishing and scratch removal of the disc (pink and blue wheels). The Fixer also comes with liquid spray disc cleaner, disc liquid polish, drying cloth and the aforementioned wheels, which can be purchased separately.

Be real careful with the liquid polish, as it is very easy to squeeze the tube too hard and end up with enough on your disc to polish 20 of thems. This stuff is like 10W30 oil, and you don't need much for it work. Maxell needs to put a smaller hole in the tube for the polish.

Really bad scratches, the kind that hang up your picture, usually take 3 cycles through the scratch removal process, then one polishing and cleaning cycle. The results on DVD's or CD's are remarkable. I can't actually say they are good as new, since it does not get out everything on particularly bad discs, but it will make it watchable or listenable. The disc will get a slightly cloudy look, but has no effect on watching.

I would not recommend going more than 3 scratch removal cycles or you run the risk of ruining the DVD/CD.

My only complaint is the noise while it is working is very close to a cement mixer or a grinding wheel! It is not the kind of thing you can use while your wife is asleep late at night, unless you want a lamp thrown at your head! Maxell, please, please, please put a muffler on these things to cut down the noise!

Other than these minor complaints, I would recommend this system to anyone, and it is very easy to use.

Customer Review: Maxell DSR-1 Pro Disc Fixer
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using this product for about 6 months now. I have nothing but good things to say about the results of my Maxell Disc Fixer. I rent a lot of DVD's and some times they can be so scratched up, and unplayable, But running the disc through the fixer just one time I have gotten all of them to work with out any problems. The repair step covers the whole disc not just the center like some others have noted, at least with mine. All the disc I have cleaned have all worked except for one which had a very deep gough in it. I recommend this product.

Customer Review: Great product - saves money

I had a DVD Beauty and the Beast that my daughter loves. She had been unable to watch it because it continually repeated a chapter due to being damaged. This product repaired the disc. I did have to run it through 3 times to completely resolve the issue but that's no big deal.
Anyway - the point is - if you have discs that are skipping - instead of replacing - buy this thing for $36 bucks from Amazon - best price I found - and fix it yourself. It's easy!
