Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Manfrotto 5001B 74-Inch Nano Stand Replaces Manfrotto 001B (Black)Customer Review: Great product (if you need a compact/portable lightstand) Summary: 5 Stars
I have plenty of lightstands.. ground level, 1.5 ft, 6 foot stands, 8 feet, 10, feet, 13 feet.. but they all have a problem (at least the 6+ foot ones) - they're big, bulky and heavy. A 6 foot stand can easily be 3 1/2 feet and 5 lbs when folded up.
Not a problem if you're setting it up in 1 location, but if you plan to carry it around for even a few hours, it's a big pain (besides the weight and odd-bulk that won't attach do anything, you'll often hit stuff with it or bang it around). That's where the 5001B nano stand is perfect!
The stand folds down to about 18 inches long, about 4-5 inches thick (because of the legs) and about 2 pounds. At this size, it can attach to most camera bags/backpacks.
It unfolds quickly but can be a bit confusing at first (it unfolds in a way other than most lightstands). It uses 5 locking screws (one for the legs, 4 for the height).
The tip is a 3/8" thread, but it comes with a Manfrotto 3/8" to 1/4" adapter of high quality ( Manfrotto 015 1/4-Inch-20 Male 20mm Long to 3/8-Inch Female Adapter - Replaces 3358 ) a great piece which will work on all 3/8" threads to convert it to 1/4". Note that it does not include any type of "coldshoe" for speedlights (you need to supply your own).
The legs are very thin (about 1/4" by 1/2" and maybe 16" long), these are not rounded legs like most stands. There are rubber tips on the ends (to prevent sliding, I'm guessing).
When fully extended, it is quite wobbly. I use it for camera-mounted Speedlights and for that it works great. I don't know if I'd put a studio strobe on it.
Any type of accessories like Umbrellas will turn it into a sail - with the stand being so light, a gust of wind can blow it over. Fortunately it does seem to have a good center of gravity.. while it does wobbly even just standing up by itself, it surprisingly doesn't tip easily. Even trying to tip it to test durability, it bounces back in place. With that said, I'd still recommend a sandbag or some type of weights (camera bag?) if used outdoors.
Paintjob is nice and doesn't seem to chip (some of my cheaper lightstands will peel the second it's rubbed against something).
The problem is the price - at 50-60 bucks, it's pricey for a 6 foot stand (one that you probably won't even want to use at 6 feet because it's so wobbly). For the same price, you can get multiple very-good 6, 8, 10 or even 13 foot stands (including air cushioning). With that said though, you can buy 3 of the 10 foot stands and if they're each 5-8 lbs and 4 1/2 feet long, they won't fix the problem that this stand will..
For that, I highly recommend it for those needing a PORTABLE / Compact stand. If you just need a stand for a studio or around the house, there are much better options.
