Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Magellan Maestro 4700 4.7-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: King Of Modern GPS Summary: 5 Stars
I've used a couple of GPS.
First one is iGuidance 3.01 for my HP Ipaq hw6945, it was my most favorite GPS software. It had guided my family to Wisconsin Dells and Niagara Falls on the Canadian side from Palatine, IL flawlessly. Unfortunately, iNav corp won't support my cell phone with its latest iGuidance 2009 GPS software for the sake of square screen resolution.
Second one is Garmin 765t which was ranked at No 3 on Amazon Top GPS selling list and No 1 for its price range. It looks like a lemon when comparing with my iGuidance 3.01:
1. Touch screen never becomes responsive and 1 out 4 taps will definitely get wrongly input when it did respond;
2. Bluetooth can paired with my cell phone but never can successfully call out, it always automatically hangs up without waiting for recipient to pick up;
3. Never beep at turning points;
4. Voice prompts at 0.6mi and 0.2mi on free way is too late to make the right maneuver;
5. Voice prompting for red-light camera could silently skip, at same turning corner, sometimes it works sometimes it won't;
6. FM transmitter has huge static noise for my Lexus car radio at all channels which makes it useless;
7. GPS lock takes 1 to 2 minutes from cold start;
8. Life Traffic never receives any signal when plugging in accompanied car adapter;
I bought this Garmin 765t from [...] via ebay with PayPal and Microsoft Bing cash rewards as New. It forces me to use my iGuidance 3.01. It also makes me to think Amazon customers ratings are just a joke ?
The third one is Magellan Maestro 4700. It ranked at 20 when I placed the order at 19th this month. Since Amazon's ranking doesn't make sense for GPS products, so I just give it a try when Amazon gave me the Golden Box one day offer.I received on 20th this month for free two days delivery for prime subscription trial.
It is amazing, it locks within 20 seconds within my house after cold start right out of the box.
Everything works intuitively without bothering to read the accompanied user guide. The software version is pretty old 1.27.
1. Touch screen is responsive and precise;
2. Bluetooth can easily paired with my cell phone easily to call out loud and clear for both ends; (1234 as the pass code)
3. It chimes right before every turning corner;
4. Voice prompts at 2.0mi, 0.5mi and 0.2mi which is exactly what I want, it allows me to watch the road ahead without the need to remember to peek it from time to time until it announces left/right turn in 2.0mis;
5. Voice prompting works extremely reliable, it never misses one;
6. It doesn't come with FM transmitter, nor MP3 player which I actually never needs it;
7. GPS lock takes 30 seconds from a cold start;
8. Traffic signal works when plugging in the accompanied car adapter charger, it shows traffic icon with delay times; when tap it, it allows to choose new route directly (I never subscribe for it, nor buy special antenna for it);
9. USB cable can charge the build-in battery without any problem; (when GPS is powered off, after plugging the USB cable, it remains powered off, but it charges the battery very fast, within one hour, it charges the battery to full from level 3)( when GPS is powered on, after plugging in USB cable, it will switch to Software and Maps Update mode immediately, it charges at a slightly slow pace);
10. Just upgraded to software version 2.20, it seems shows better UI, making faster UI response even faster; I upgraded it from my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, it takes only 1 min and 40 seconds to install new software from PC to the GPS; another 20 seconds for the GPS to reboot into new version;
The only cons are:
1. looks like no way to delete or edit Bluetooth speed dial;
2. free way lane assistant takes too many screen real estate, no need to show street names for lanes other than the right one(s);
3. [...] website needs to overhaul; guides and instructions are out of sync with actual products;
I finally find a king of GPS to replace my outdated iGuidance 3.01.
