Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Magellan Maestro 4250 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

Customer Review: Great GPS unit
Summary: 5 Stars

I was upgrading from a Magellan Roadmate 700 - and since I was happy with the map style, POIs, and address input methods - it seemed to make sense to stick with Magellan. I am very happy, that, so far, Magellan has fixed almost all of the problems and disappointments I had with the old model:
-power cable/Battery power: Over time, the power connection got loose, the old unit would reboot every time I went over a bump. The new unit has a sturdier USB power connection and 3 hours of battery life
-size: same screen size as the 700, but the new unit is tiny (and sexy)
-address entry: now with zip codes! If you know the zip, it speeds up address entry considerably.
-satellites: the Maestro typically "finds" itself within a minute of leaving the house.
-navigation: although occasionally making some puzzling decisions in the DC area, it always gets you there. The map is very clear, day or night, and I like the split screen display - I used to hate when the map went away as I neared a turn to just be replaced with a large turn arrow.

The only (so far minor) disappointments with some of the new features - the voice command works OK, but you have to speak loudly and enunciate clearly to be heard. Makes a cool party trick in a full car, though. The bluetooth works OK, but the link needs to be reestablished every time you get in the car (maybe this is normal?)

The only problem I've had thus far is that the unit has frozen twice on the start up screen in the 40 or so times I've used it - requiring a reboot (have a pen handy) - This is annoying and I hope Magellan can issue a patch.

I got this GPS for christmas and it was everything I expected and more. My dad has one of those really expensive built-in GPS units in his Dodge and after comparing the two, this one is far better. There is no area I have found yet where "turn by turn guidence cannot be provided" Even in very rural areas.
Also, this unit speaks the name of each street you need to turn on, it's really nice not to have to look at the screen to get the street name, and it even knows the names of the really small streets. It must have a huge database. The bluetooth connectivity is great, I love to be able to make phone calls without holding my phone, which is now illegal where I live. It is also very smart about searching streets and businesses. For addresses once you enter a city when you start typing in a street name it narrows down the possibilities for you. It does the same thing with businesses, and you can choose to search a business by distance from your location, nearest to a city, or nearest to an address. These options are very handy when you are trying to find a specific location. The screen is also really bright and clear, very easy to see.
The window mount that it comes with is also nice, it sticks to your window great. I tried to pull it off and it wouldn't come, very secure. It also comes with all the cords it needs; wall charger, car charger, USB cable and a quick reference manual and disc. Oh yeah, and a soft case too.
And I love the touch screen, it works great and it is easy to hit the right button, although I would recommend a screen protector, as everything you do requires that you touch the screen.

Customer Review: Quality GPS full of extras at an affordable price
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the second Magellan I've owned. My first GPS was a refurbished Magellan that I purchased approx. 5 years ago off ebay. The unit still functions flawlessly, but the maps are becoming out-of-date and it's signal confirmation is slower than more modern units. So it was time to replace it with another...and I had no hesitation on purchasing another Magellan, even if it wasn't the Consumer Reports Best Buy. It did make the top 10 though. Another reason for choosing the Magellan over it's competition was...as a AAA subscribing member I was able to obtain another year of extended warranty for free (2 years total). The Magellan 4250 has all the features I need in a GPS and is quite easy to use. I was even able to pick up a satellite signal from inside my home, which wasn't possible with my old unit. I haven't actually used my Magellan 4250 yet on any extended trips, but have used it in a limited fashion around town and it is pretty responsive and picks up the signal quite quitely...something my older unit wasn't able to do quite so well. I'm not a big bluetooth user, but was able to set up the Magellan 4250 with my Motorola Razr phone pretty easy...only took a couple of tries. Sound quality and reception are excellent. Hope to use this more in the near future. All-in-all, I'm very pleased with the Magellan 4250 performance and functions. I did take the advice of several other reviewer and upgraded the software as soon as I received the GPS unit.

Magellan Maestro 4250 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

This was the unit that replaced the 4050 in Magellan's line up.
Whats NEW: voice activated controls, built in traffic with subscription (you get the 1st 90 days FREE) after that it costs $40.00 annually.

PROS:
This is a wonderful unit,it has all the bells and whistles and is easy to use, no problems encountered since purchase. Comes with all neccessary extras:Suction window mount, adhesive mount, AC adapter, DC plug for the car, soft case and even comes with velcro cable ties to keep things neat.
I especially like the AAA info about different places (even if you don't have a AAA membership)and the fact it has over 6 million POI's

CONS:
Voice Activated Control is very limited, you can only use it to find POI's. I wish Magellan would have included more voice activated features.
Maps were current as of July 2007, the unit was released for sale in December 2007, I wish the maps were more current, there is a new highway in my area that's been open for over a year and its not on the maps. I wish the maps were updateable and It would be nice if Magellan would include free updates for the first year.

I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS UNIT.

Customer Review: Great GPS with Traffic
Summary: 5 Stars

I am thrilled with my Magellan Maestro 4250. The user interface is very easy to use, it looks fantastic, and it works just as I need it to. I bought this 4250 for the traffic feature and in the first week of use it has already saved me over 1 hour of travel time.
Initiating the traffic feature was simple - I created an account at Magellan's website and entered the appropriate codes into the fields. The traffic was active as soon as I entered the resulting code into the GPS unit.
When you activate the traffic feature you get a car icon in the lower right corner of the screen which is colored green, yellow or red depending on the traffic conditions. This feature works best when you have a route planned but it will also work if you're just viewing a map of the area you're in. If you touch the car icon it will display any incidents (in text format - i.e. 'Slow traffic moving at 37mph 2.4 miles ahead on I-820W' etc.) on your planned route. If you're just viewing a map of the area icons along the roads will indicate conditions and you can touch these icons to view text description.
Twice in the past week the 4250 has routed me around heavy traffic, saving me valuable time. The routing was automatic - it seemed to 'view' the traffic ahead on the planned route and then adjusted accordingly. I can't say enough positive things about this feature!
