Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Macally USB Slim Keyboard - ICEKEY

Customer Review: Best Mac Keyboard to use, besides the ones on the Powerbooks that is.
Summary: 5 Stars

I switched from a Powerbook to a Mac Mini and was in search of a keyboard that felt like I was typing on my Powerbook (effortlessly). Although nothing can beat the powerbook's keyboard, this does quite a close job. I first started using the apple pro keyboard with my mac mini and was not used to having to press down so hard on the keys that I always ended up missing letters when I typed up a document or anything for that matter.

Then I read the reviews on this puppy and decided to give it a try. Best buy I've made. It's very easy to use and smooth too.
I love that it has special function keys for the Mac and that it also has 2 usb ports. The one thing that would make this keyboard even better is if it were wireless (bluetooth specifically). Although don't let that deter you from buying this, especially if you just hide all your wires behind the computer anyway.

There's also this weird blank key on the keyboard. It has no function whatsoever and you can't program it to do anything. It's just there. Weird. But I only noticed it when I first tried it out and have never noticed it again. But I figure it's worth mentioning for those of you who are extremely particular about things.

It's a great keyboard for a great price. If you don't mind the cord and want to type with extreme ease, i think you'll love this one.

This keyboard is the MacAlly IceKey. Amazon.coms description of it is a little wanting,

This is, quite simply, the most comfortable keyboard my fingers have ever had the pleasure of using. It's low-profile, short-travel keys are more responsive than any keyboard I've ever seen. It requires far less effort than the long-travel typewriter-style keyboards that are so ubiquitous today. It's scissor-mechanism keys do produce a mechanical tickity-tackety sound when you're typing, but it's hardly obnoxious; I find it infinitely preferrable to the soft, lifeless feel of the quieter rubber-plunger-style key.

Now - for the best part! - the IceKey is made for the Mac computer, but it works just fine on a PC. It's USB interface will work with any PC that supports a USB keyboard. When you plug it in and boot, Windows will detect it as a new device; just let it find compatible USB device drivers in the c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, and it works like a dream. There are four keys in the upper right corner of the keyboard (Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, and CD Eject) that won't work on a PC because they require software driver support, and said drivers are only available for Mac. Honestly, it couldn't matter less to me. I LOVE this keyboard. It's easily the best $$ investment I've ever made toward my computing experience. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Customer Review: I love this keyboard as a replacement for Apple Pro
Summary: 5 Stars

The only problem I have with this keyboard is that I had questions regarding it and sent two emails to Macally, through their customer service website, and never received an answer. I guess they don't really care if they sell one or not and it makes me wonder if I should have problems down the road if they will give any response to a problem. I was trying to choose between two different Macally keyboards.

That being said, I have to say I went ahead and ordered the IceKey because I really needed a new keyboard bad (coffee spill!). This keyboard works great, I really do think you type faster on it. The touch is really nice with a little click, but responsive and not noisy. It only needs a touch. The reach on a few keys is a little different but nothing you can't adjust to. Everything works the same with my iMac as the old Apple Pro I was using. Another plus is that if it gets dirty you can wipe it clean, nothing can get caught in a see through area that you can't get to.

I read only great reviews on this keyboard and I have to say they were all true. I also have to add that I am pretty fussy and I don't adjust to change very well so finding a keyboard without being able to try it out first was a real worry for me. I hate ordering and sending back. Well I lucked out here, I would never send my IceKey back!

Customer Review: Excellent keyboard.

I read the reviews here before buying this keyboard and I must say that I agree with all the positive comments about the superior comfort and quality of this keyboard. This keyboard is a real pleasure to use -- it is just what I was looking for.

While this keyboard offers all the unique keys that Apple's keyboards offer (volume controls, eject, brightness controls via F14 and F15), those unique keys don't work right out of the box. The keyboard comes with a disc and you have to run the installer to get these to work. (The installer loads a kernel extension. Presently, a version of the installer for Intel Macs is available from the Macally website -- dig around under their "Tech Support" link.)

I really like the "laptop style" key travel, but I did have to get used to the low profile of the spacebar relative to the edge of the keyboard housing. This was actually a good thing as it prompted me to hold my hands in a better typing position.

Oh, and about that strange "extra" key down in the bottom row -- I think I found out why it's there. This keyboard apparently comes in a "Windows" flavour which uses the extra key. To see what it looks like you can use the A9 web search (or Google ;-) to look for DS International -- they call it the KB-5000.

Customer Review: SIMPLY the best keyboard ever

I have an iMac G5. I thought it was pretty freakin cool. Then I used my husband's PowerBook for a few days and was AMAZED at how fast I could type on that thing! The flat keyboard is amazing! I do a ton of typing, and my regular Mac keyboard just wasn't cutting it anymore after using the PowerBook. It felt like I had to push my fingers down a million miles just to type something. It was slowing me down. I went to the Mac store, but they only had the regular keyboard. So, I got this Macally Icekey on Amazon. It is so awesome! It is very similar to the feel of the PowerBook keyboard, but actually feels a little more stable. I can type super fast with it with very few mistakes (I was making mistakes all the time on my regular Mac keyboard because I wan't hitting the keys right on all the time.) With this Icekey, I don't even have to look at the keyboard at all. My fingers just slide right over it, and as you can see right now, I am looking for any excuse to type a lot. I'll spare you, except for this last part: If you work on a computer at all, you need this keyboard. It will make your experience so much more enjoyable! Oh yeah, and this keyboard is plug and play, but I loaded the software anyway and the volume controls on the keyboard work great for me.
