Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Lomographic Holga Starter KitCustomer Review: I love my holga! Summary: 4 Stars
I LOVE my holga. Its so much fun to work with and people always asks about it when I'm out and about snapping pics. I got the starter kit about a year ago. The book included in the kit has lots of beautiful images and fun tips. The kit also contained batteries for the flash, a roll of 120 mm film, instructions, and electrical tape. I highly recommend that some kind of tape is used because I've had problems with the back cover sliding off. I also recommend converting your holga so it can use 35 mm film (you can either buy a converter or make one yourself). In my experience, developing 120 is expensive and its not something you can take to a drugstore to develop. I guess a cheaper way of developing 120 film is to develop it yourself if you have the means to do so.
I'd have to say that the best feature is the colour flash, its amazing, especially with multiple exposures.
I think the worst feature is the focus, because it doesn't seem to do much of anything (at least in my experience).
Don't expect all your images to be phenomenal or you might end up disappointed. Holga is perfect at making things imperfect, which is the best part. Embrace the crazy looking pictures.
Customer Review: HOlga-riffic Summary: 4 Stars
Very fun to point and "expose" with, because of the unexpected exposure effects made possible with the plastic lens and the manual features (e.g. can create a vignette look). One major downside to the plastic (cheap-looking) camera is that the sidebars holding the back cover get loose and slide easily (one remedy that can hold them in place involve some tape and velcro...). The flash filters are handy in creating some mad effect on contrast and color schemes. The electric tape can be used to prevent light leaks. The book features some techniques and a lot of pictures. If you're looking for something that will give you "certainty" in knowing exactly how your pictures will turn out, try a digital camera. If you're looking for something that give you greater control for depth of field and shutter speed, try a traditional, manual SLR. If you like experimenting with alternative exposure techniques (e.g. masking and multiple exposures) as well as camera modifications, and are open to being surprised by what the camera captures, try this one.
Customer Review: Addicted to Holga Summary: 4 Stars
I first started out with digital, but was drawn to the world of lomography and holga-graphy. I thought the package would take forever to get here because of the arrival estimate, but it came in quite fast. I bought the kit for $50, and thought it was a good invesment--the package came in with the camera, several manuals, batteries, tape, 120 film and a great book from the lomography society featuring holga shots, tips and tricks. I am almost done with the first film and can't wait to see how it turns out.
There is one downside though. The Holga camera I bought was a 120 CFN, which uses different colored flashes. I was very disappointed that the flash did not work! I tried changing batteries--nada. It sucks to have a 120 CFN with a non-working flash; I mean, the color flash is the defining characteristic of this model! The Holga is an awesome camera because you never know what you'll get image-wise, but please don't expect that it will WORK because after all, it is just a cheap plastic toy camera...
Customer Review: Great, easy and fun camera. Summary: 4 Stars
At first I was apprehensive buying a Holga. I have only ever used Minolta X-700 SLR's and Maxxum AF SLR's. The images I have seen from Holgas seemed to have so much more depth and soul, so I ordered one for myself. I had seen these on display at a high-priced clothing store at the mall that also sells vintage items. I was intrigued but they wanted twice the price for the starter kit. When I looked it up on Amazon.com I was surprised at what I thought was the great value of the starter kit. I am only disappointed because my kit did not include the roll of color film or the batteries. Other people have mentioned these items missing from their box as well. Otherwise I would rate this a great deal compared to brick and mortar stores in my city. Film and batteries are relatively cheap. The book that comes with the kit is inspiring and full of beautiful photos made with this humble toy camera.
Customer Review: A new experience in photography Summary: 4 Stars
This camera may be plastic but it's not meant for kids, the film is a little more difficult to load than a 35mm camera and is a little more fragile. But if you're interested in photography and you have never tried something different than a standard 35mm camera or a digital camera, this is a great product to buy. The book that comes with it includes work from other "lomographers" as well as tips and tricks on how to use your camera. The varied results are much more fun and interesting than a regular camera, and there are so many possibilities. It uses 120mm medium format film which you will need to purchase online or from a photo shop, worth the extra effort for the results if you're serious about photography.
