Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech mm50 Portable Speaker System for iPod (White)Customer Review: Excellent Sound Summary: 5 Stars
With my job, I have the opportunity to sample a lot of docking stations. If you have the room, the Altec Lansing IM7 is the best (it's that big tubular looking thing, and it packs a punch). For more portable applications, this Logitech mm50 is BY FAR the best system out there for the size.
You can easily spend more on other portable systems, such as smaller Altec Lansing systems, but they do not even begin to compare. Great sound- deep base and crisp highs- and yes, it's loud. I measured over 120dB (C weighted) next to the speakers. That is a measurement of loudness SPL (sound pressure level), and 120dB is the equivalent of a rock concert (keep in mind, this is right next to the speakers). The other systems I have tested do not come close. You can drive these speakers into distortion, but with that power there is no reason to crank it all the way up.
Integrated LiION battery with AC adapter. IR remote (limited range). Switchable 3D sound expansion (makes the music appear to come from speakers that are further apart). Push button up/down volume control. Class D digital amplifier (battery lasts much longer). Has a jack on back for any MP3 player, or just dock your iPod in it, and the buttons on the unit (and the IR remote) control the iPod! It also has a second connector on the back for the iPod sync cable, so you can dock it and bring up iTunes on your PC, and be fully connected.
Interesting note: you can see four speakers in the mm50, but only two are active. The other two are passive cones, which, combined with the case cavity, is perfectly tuned to deliver FAR more sound than what you would expect. Try the mm50 for yourself, you will be very pleased.
Customer Review: great speakers by being realistic Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the speakers for my 1 year old son about a month and a half ago. He goes to sleep listening to his music and I needed a solution for traveling. All his music are on our Ipod, I just needed to find speakers. I researched various websites for several days, read reviews from customers and experts, compared them in the store etc. I decided for the mm50 and have not regretted it so far. I have no problem with battery life, they easily work for the stated 7 hours which gives me plenty of time before I can recharge them again. Once charged up, they stay so until I run them empty. Some customers complained about the volume, I don't. I never once needed to turn the volume all the way up. My baby needs a low volume to fall asleep although there is always a sound machine going on to block out outside noises. We listened to it in the car too, and when we are at home I use it in my bedroom to listen to books. Our bedroom is huge, and some of the bookreaders have a tiny voice but I was always perfectely satisfied with the volume. If you like to listen to really loud music you may have an issue with the volume, othervise there shoudn't be a problem with it. But then again, you should get more realistic considering the size of the speakers, and the fact that these are portable speakers, mostly for traveling where you don't want to disturb others with a loud volume anyway. The sound is very clear, it is even more enjoyable when you turn the 3D on. I like the remote and never had a problem operating it as long there wasn't anything between the control and the speakers to block the infrared. If you are a realistic person, these speakers may exceed your expectations.
Customer Review: ~Look no Further!!!~ Summary: 5 Stars
I've researched all of the IPod speakers pretty well and this product exceeds by far! This includes talking w/other people that have had the JBL On Stage speakers (and already returned them!) and the Altec Lansing inMotion. I listened to the Altec system first, it sounded pretty good and I was satisfied. Then I put my IPod on the mm50, WOW, what a difference! More surround sound, and base instantly raised my eyebrows! Impressed, impressed, impressed! The price is great and the sound is surprisingly clear & crisp, I've heard instruments I didn't know existed in songs I've been listening to for years! I like the fact that is has the "optional" base boost, comes with a case, a remote and it charges your IPod while on the dock... others do not have these extras.
Only cons I see are the 10 hours of play on the battery vs. Altec's 24, but I can recharge my battery w/out replacing AA's all the time unlike the Altec. And the size is quite a difference, but what is more important, size or sound...I chose sound! Good way to imagine the size, I'm 5'6 and if I make a fist the dock measures from the tip of my knuckles to my elbow. I would say the thickness is less than an inch and a half, and height about 4 inches.
I'm picky about stereo sound and always messing w/the equalizer options to optimize it. I hope this review helps. Happy shopping!
Customer Review: Stellar! Summary: 5 Stars
I am only moved to write reviews when the product greatly exceeds expectations, one way or another. In this case, the Logitech mm50 is really an extraordinary thing.
Our requirement: a portable way to use our IPod as the primary source of music when we are on vacation. How well does this mm50 satisfy? This small (about the size of a box of spaghetti), rugged (fell to the floor, been in checked luggage, is still ticking) unit puts out an amazingly rich, room filling sound. The `expand' function really creates a very large stereo sound field. The battery life (there is an internal Lion battery) goes all day at full volume.
Minor quibbles: the carrying case, so well designed for securely transporting the unit and its remote, amazingly doesn't accommodate your IPod OR the mm50's charger (which is thankfully about the size of a typical cell phone charger). The remote is VERY line of site. The unit sounds ok at low volume, much better a louder volume.
Unexpected bonuses: there is an auxiliary in, which make this even more versatile, as a speaker for the kids' portable DVD player. Unit has the capacity to really crank -it filled a 1200 square foot condo full of undistorted sound. Proof of pudding: our neighbors at that condo were blown away by the fact that it sounded every bit as good in our condo as their Bose did in theirs, but the mm50 was obviously more convenient to travel with.
Customer Review: Best iPod speaker system available - and price just came down Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this a couple of weeks ago, when the price was 20% higher. But you know what? I don't mind, because the Logitech mm50 is worth every penny I paid for it.
I know that sometimes Amazon reviewers give high ratings because they're trying to reassure themselves, after the fact, that they made the right decision. Trust me, I'd be critical of this system if it had fallen below my expectations.
It was a bit of a gamble for me, because I bought it without having heard it (somehow, not a single store I went into had a Logitech mm50 set up for demo purposes). It has already surpassed my expectations.
I've played classical, jazz and vocals, and they've all sounded amazingly good. Here's a tip: Be sure to press the "3-D sound" button -- it makes all the difference, considerably widening the field of sound. That little button is what makes this system just as good as, if not better than, the Bose equivalent (which currently costs three times as much).
It is true, as other reviewers have noted, that the remote could be better. It's pretty weak, and only effective from too close a distance to be very useful.
But with that caveat, I wholeheartedly recommend this system. And at the new lower price, you really can't lose. Happy listening, folks.
