Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker SystemCustomer Review: If you have a place for the subwoofer, buy this system!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently purchased the Logitech Z-5500 speaker system to use with my Sony VAIO desktop, Sony dvd player, and 20gb iPod. For me, sound quality was as important as connection options - and this set does not disappoint in either regard. I have the included speaker wires going into my 5.1 sound card, a Monster Cable Digital Optical Cable running to my Sony dvd player, and a 3.5mm cable connecting my iPod to the speakers. As other readers correctly point out, the sound is incredible right out of the box. Though I'm hardly an audiophile, these speakers sound far superior to the Logitech X-530 5.1 system (harldy a bad speaker system!) that came with my PC.
As good and useful as the wireless remote is, I believe the best feature of this entire system is the Digital SoundTouch control center. Beyond connectivity options, the control center is easy-to-use and offers numerous sound settings and adjustments.
I also wanted to point out was how great Logitech's support website is. The pages are very thorough and include photos of the entire "installation" steps. Hats off to Logitech for providing ways to improve a speaker system so easily.
Lastly, a final thought on the system's volume. As other readers point out - it is simply thunderous. At half volume the sound is more than any listener needs to enjoy the experience. A 10" subwoofer is ridiculous on paper, but trying to find a suitable place to position it may be challenging if you haven't thought ahead about this step. And make sure to follow the instructions and keep it (and its magnet) away from any electronic components.
With that said, the price of these speakers has been falling and I consider them a steal for the $220 I spent on them. Perhaps like a sucker I bought the 3-year warranty, but thus far I have had no problems with them and look forward to years of satisfying listening.
Customer Review: The BEST 5.1 speaker system I've ever used. Summary: 5 Stars
I will go out and say this right now: This speaker system is THE BEST 5.1 surround sound speaker system I've EVER used in my ENTIRE life. This system produces excellent quality sound with anything that I use it for. My setup is using a MacBook Pro, with a tiny mini-toslink to toslink converter and an optical connection to the system. But, this will work with 6.1 channel direct connection (orange, black, green cables) or a digital coaxial connection (orange connection). This thing is blasting out 5.1 Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound music like it was really recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1. I could NOT have asked for a better system.
One thing I didn't like about this was how big the Subwoofer and the Control Pod were. The subwoofer is about 13" wide, 13" tall, and about 15" long. But, I have room for it, so it doesn't bother me. I was very surprised how big the control pod is. It is BIGGER than one of the speakers, but again, I have a lot of room on my huge desk, so it wasn't a problem for me. The Control pod (the thing with the knob and the screen) is where the computer connects to. The speakers are standard clamp speaker wire, not RCA cables, but they work fine nonetheless, and they all connect to the subwoofer.
Note: If you're looking to mount these speakers (besides the fact that they are very sturdy when mounted), they angle downwards then the stand is turned around to become the mount, so be sure you can place them higher than where you sit for them to work best.
Also, this subwoofer does use powerful magnets, so it needs to be placed away from your computer. A little slip that is attached to the subwoofer says at least 2 feet, but that isn't far away enough for me. It won't fizzle out your computer or anything, but the bass, turned up at maximum will be reduced. 3 feet is adequate, but farther away is better.
Excellent system, 5 stars.
Customer Review: Wow.. just.. wow Summary: 5 Stars
I am literally blown away by these speakers. I ordered them Monday, got them wednsday with 3-5 day shipping, i took them ripped open the box set them up and turned them on. Since then i have been shocked. I spent 2 weeks searching the internet for good quality speakers that were just what i needed: Good quality, good brand, 6 speakers, powerful, and most importantly able to handle all the different things i was going to plug into it. One of the main reasons i bought it was all of the differnt types of inputs. Right now i have my PC, my PS2, and my Digital Cable Box all pluged in, at the same time!!! All yo need to do is push a button and you can switch between any of them. The control center is awsome, i love it, you can change all of the settings inputs output settings and effects, not to mention it looks cool :) I have the 4 satalites wall mounted and the center wall mounted under my projector screen :) I have my cable box and ps2 hooked up to my projector which is projecting across my room onto my wall. Watching DVD's or playing online ps2 games with this is just amazing. I could not love logitech any more than i do now. The sound is extremely crsip and clear, i can hear every instrument and parts i havnt heard before these speakers. The sub is huge, and im lovin it, 188 watts of bass ! That is awsome! The whole house shakes. These speakers are worth every penny, seriously, if you have any doubt about spending 280$ on speakers, dont. Trust me. Youll be happy you bought them. You can use them on anything not just your computer, though you might have to buy an extra cable. I still have no idea what else to put, i love them. Make sure you download some classic 70's music and listen to it, they sound mind blowing. Wow... i just got done with an intense listeing session till my neighbors yelled at me for blastring music 11:00 at night :) Oh well haha. Buy them today. Youll be glad you did.
Customer Review: "Big Sound!" Summary: 5 Stars
My title is pretty direct. The sound is ENORMOUS that is produced out of these. For a fairly cheap 5.1 system it plays back sound quality that is top notch. The bass can produce immense volume, the satellites offer great tone and sound quality, the center gives good feedback as well. However I've not gotten to run this through it's full paces in true 5.1 yet to give an accurate description. So I will simply describe it in simplest terms first, and later update this.
I used the movie "Saving Private Ryan" and "War of the Worlds" to test and bench mark against my old logitech 2.1 system. Let me say that with the bass alone my old speaker system was drowned out completely by the opening sequence of "Saving Private Ryans" beach landing. The sound of bullets and the shock of mortars really pumped out of the 10 inch sub.
The Rears and fronts gave good quality for spoken dialogue and the higher frequencies of bullets and gun fire came through excellent. All in all the only one speaker of this set I've not yet gotten good feeback from is the center, again due to my lack of proper set up for the true 5.1, pesky sound card! My 2.1 couldn't hope to keep up with this system. Although a good system, the sub alone is about the size of 3 of my old.
For "War of the Worlds" the trumpeting of the alien ships was immense. The sound of building being destroyed and beams vaporizing civilians came through excellent! Leaving a very cinematic feel. I was impressed overall by the fidelity of which this produces sound. Given again, that it is not a top of the line home theater system, but for computer system it really is awesome.
For my brief intro, I will say this already is worth every penny I spent and I would recommend these a thousand times over. Once I do some upgrades to my PC to offer better sound processing I'll revisit this for a fuller review.
Customer Review: Z5500 Rocks!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I had the Item shipped to my friend via Super Saver shipping. Got there in good condition and ahead of time to boot!!!
Opened it up, connected it, and plugged in my MP3 portable into the side of the control unit for 3.5mm plugs. It sucked big!!!! Absolutely no bang at all, while static and strained notes ruled when the volume knob was twisted to the high power levels.
Connected the THX optical cable which I also got bought, and inserted a good music disc in the DVD player. WWHOOOAAAAAHHHH!!!!!. Made the mistake of putting the volume to high before starting and my neighbors have yet to forgive me!!!! Suddenly, everything came to life. My music sounded just like at any good HiFi shop, and playing movies in DTS mode, plomps me right in the middle of the best house seats in a THX hall!!!!!!!
I could hear notes and sounds which on my old system, never showed up. Playing some classical inspired Audiophile discs played through a Marantz CD player brought out the missing sounds and minor 'mistakes' made by the artistes clear as ice. Watching Star Wars 2 on the DVD made me turn around and wonder whether the skies were pouring during the Kamino scene, and had me dodging during the battle scene of Droids versus Clones.
However, not everything is perfect just yet.
The small problems with the unit which caused me to feel less than 200% satisfied, include, hard wired speaker cables, cheapest of the cheap remote control design, slightly uneven Subwoofer rubber legs (stubs), and the aforementioned problem with my MP3 portable (which can be rectified with a 3rd party item).
All I can say is if you can live with the small flaws, Buy One NOW!!! You won't regret buying it for the quality of the sound. And if you do, please use a cotton stick - Ear cleaner to decongest your auditory cannals !!!
