First I was concerned that I will have to buy an external sound card to support the 5.1 setup for my laptop. But you can just plug in the green cable (out of the three provided for a conventional 5.1 sound card) in the stereo output of your laptop (like for the 2.1 speakers). There is a switch behind the sub-woofer which you can toggle between 2.1, 4.1 and 5.1. So change it to 2.1 and then turn on the Matrix function on the remote. This will give you a pretty good surround sound experience! When the matrix function is off, the front and rear speakers will give the same sound. But when it is turned on, the rear speakers provinde a nice background surround sound. Also, you can change the sub, center and rear speaker volumes from the remote.
I think these speakers are very compatible, and the sound quality is very nice.

These thing sound very good especially for the price. As the other reviews have stated the chords are not long enough, but to be honest, they are speaker wires, and since not every set up is indentical, it is nice to be able to just buy the right length you need. And since every Radio Shack and the like have these you are in no real trouble.
The bass doesn't sound to loud or punchy to me, as the other reviews have said. And you get a suprising amount of control from such a inexpensive system. No they do sound like thousand dollar speakers, but they do sound well above the 80 dollar price tag($80 dollars when i bought them, apperantly the price has gone up).
If you want something for your game room, definitely consider these. They are great sounding for the price.

I did not buy this speaker system from amazon, (i got it for 80 dollars after a 50 dollar rebate) but when it arrived and i set it up, i was blown away. A little known fact about this system is that it is compatible with an ipod and still plays 5.1 surround, all you need is an adapter easily purchased at radioshack. The bass on this system is like nothing ive ever heard, and the trebles are high and clear. the mids are a tad laid back, but for 80 dollars AND BEING THX CERTIFIED this is certainly worth it. Plus, i recently sold my klipsch promedia GMX-D 5.1 system because there was too much hiss and hum coming from the speakers (not a defect, they were build that way) and these have NO hiss or hum whatsoever! I originally bought this to use for my tv, and it has not failed me thus far. However, since it was so good, it has been repossessed by my sister until I pay off a couple favors. Whether it be music on TV or movies on the computer (or vice-versa), these surround sound speakers will do the trick in a pinch. Next up, karaoke-compatability!
Pros:
-Loud+ deep bass. Excellent for my 20 x 40 entertainment room.
-Works excellent in compatability with gaming or regular computers
-Exceeds expectations when connected to TV (accessories may be required)
Cons:
-Wired, and a tad short at that. (Maybe it can be fixed with some accessories)
-Limited control on sound besides volume and superbass.

I can't say enough good things about these speakers. This will be the third set in my house. Excellent base response, can't beat'em for video games. Realistic sounds/surround sound. Easy to hook up and fine tune if you want, or just leave with factory settings (still sounds great). Can't beat the bang (or "boom") for the buck. Delivery is astounding. Was at my door before I even got the email saying when it would arrive :) My son spent about 3 times the cost of these speakers for something else and they don't sound anywhere as good as these ones do.
Trust me.....buy them, you won't regret it! We've already recommended these to atleast 6 other people from around the country (fellow gamers) and not one has a bad word to say.
