Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Z-2300 THX-Certified 2.1 Speaker System with Subwoofer

Customer Review: Excellent Choice For the Price
Summary: 5 Stars

It's tax refund time, and I have some money to blow on some things that I could really live without, but would like to have nonetheless. So, I purchased these speakers to replace a set of cheaper competitor's 4.1 speakers. At the same time, I purchased the Creative Audigy 2 ZS sound card to replace my Biostar motherboard's onboard sound. I wanted something that sounded good. After reading many, many reviews, I was stuck on a decision to buy Logitech's Z-5300e or the Z-2300. I decided to go with the 2.1 setup since I would mostly be listening to music. I don't play that many games, and I definitely don't watch movies on the computer, and rarely on TV, either.

The speakers arrived a day before the sound card (ordered from two different stores), so I went ahead and gave them a test drive with the onboard sound card. The loudness and deeper bass was there, and the quality was a little better. I was about to regret the speaker purchase, but decided I'd wait until I got the Sound Blaster card.

The card arrived. After installation, I played the demos which shipped with the card and some MP3's. I even slipped in a DVD movie. I was impressed with everything. I couldn't believe the difference in how the speakers sound with a good sound card. It's like being in a movie theater. The bass is easily tamed, but it can most definitely shake your floors with the right music and volume.

Don't forget to try out the THX demo which Logitech ships with the speakers. You can install the demo or to save hard drive space, you go directly to the CD to play the files. Lots of other samples, but you have to look for them in Program Files or on the CD. Perhaps one of the many applications Logitech gives you lists these sample music files.

Now, my only regret is should I have gotten the Z-5300e 5.1 speakers for a few dollars more, but probably not since my listening agenda will be music. The PC is in a small room (sunroom) with ceramic floors, so I think the Z-2300 set is more than sufficient. They can get very, very loud. Two more speakers in the rear (and a center) probably wouldn't matter much since this is a smaller room with not much sound absorbers. I remember the rear speakers with the old 4.1 set were barely noticeable, anyway. Maybe I'll reinstall them just to listen how they sound with SoundBlaster.

I'll give these five stars because of the price and the quality I heard. However, the full quality would not have been there without the SoundBlaster, or another high quality sound card. Onboard sound controllers, those built into the motherboard, don't do these speakers any justice.

Customer Review: Any better and your ears might start to bleed ...

As an audiophile with an eclectic music taste ranging from Romantic Classical (maybe even Baroque) to today's top 25 hits, I don't think I could have purchased a better pair of speakers for the price (~$[...] after rebate). By all means if you have space for a 5.1 and want it then please go spend your $[...] and get a serious set for true surround sound. Otherwise don't even bother, the marginal cost just isn't worth it.

My requirements were essentially limited as I am a university student with little room for a huge set up, but at the same time wished to make a worthy long term investment. The Z2300's were the perfect solution. Not out of budget, THX certified, great reviews, and aesthetically pleasing. Of course they are speakers so the sound was the operative characteristic.

For $[...], I don't think you can find anything better. Sure the bass is a tad too heavy and the trebles could be more rich and blah blah blah like some people have said. Stop nitpicking. For the price this is a STEAL. Honestly, Logitech needs some marketing help, because these things would still sell like hotcakes for $[...] a pop. These at a quarter volume already reach the threshold of being too loud for auditory pleasure and satisfaction. The bass is ridiculous and doesn't even need to be at the default setting and should if anything be toned down unless you're one of those, let me put 500W woofers in the trunk of my car and create minor earthquakes throughout town, kinda person.

All in all, when looking for a 2.1 or 2.0 setup for your desktop, laptop, or even home theatre system this is it. It can hook up to your TV with an adapter that's included making it that much more useful and rather then spend your $[...] on a crappy Logitech or $[...] on some weird looking Harmons, get these! Of course if you are of the income bracket to be picky and essentially a prick, get your 5.1 Bose, don't even bother with the 2.0's, you must have a house large enough and enough income to support the 5.1 over any 2.x.

Even if you are that rich, I still suggest these. I hope for my sake the durability of these aren't in question, because I definitely plan on keeping these for a solid decade and raising the roof with em at times when necessary. Trust me, these with raise the roof and create ripples in your floors while you're at it.

A cautionary note, the bass is extremely large, but well worth it. It ends up being a perfect foot rest as well and with the right music even massages! Another bonus feature, what's not to like about these?!

Customer Review: EVERYTHING IS AWESOME ABOUT THIS!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

TOTAL EPICNESS!!! This by far the best audio system i got for this price. This overpowers my living room 20 year old audio system, barley though due to the audio system being $1000 back then, Advent speakers and Carver receiver. This Z-2300 is better than that, doesn't get as loud though, but the sub shakes my whole 1,872 square foot house! Its awesome!!!! EVERYTHING on this is the best. Love the wire remote by the way. I use this on my laptop which its really good, i needed it. I'm right next to my bedroom window, so i can show off sometime!!! ITS AWESOME!!! 200watts normally, but 400watts Peak. THANKS LOGITECH FOR DISCONTINUING THESE, Why in the world would you ever discontinue this 400watter for a 200watt-only z623 system? The z623 is awful i read, and + the controls are on one of the satellite speakers, another minus... i love the wired remote on the Z-2300. Here are some positives and negatives on the Z-2300:

Negatives:

-never play the system above half-way volume unless you got the computer turned down a little.
-a little too much wires, just a little much
-a millimeter of the right satellite speakers' grill ripped, just a mm though, not bad.
-too powerful, its unexpected when someone is sleeping, LOL!!!
-the sub-woofer could have been a little more powerful for an 8". Should have been a 10" instead. I guess its just right for the price... I admit (lol).

Positives:

-Sub is epic, shakes whole house even before halfway volume.
-wires are TOO much, they are sort of just right, I guess.
-Wired remote so I can go in my bed and watch a movie with my laptop, got a wireless Logitech M305 mouse as well, so that helps too.
-better than my living room sound system at the moment. Will be upgrading living room system in a year to 5.1
-400watts of power max, thats awesome.
-works with movies, music, and games excellent.
-best system under $150 out there
-BETTER THAN BOSE!!! in your face Bose!!! :P (lol)
-its a Logitech, thats what makes it a positive!
-gonna have this baby for 3-5 fantastic years coming down the road.
-less than a year old still
-got it from newegg
-THX certified
-AWESOME!!!

I guess thats all right now. My friend and me love it, its awesome!!! My parents are amazed too. I love this system. Best system I blast music almost every other day!!!!! Its awesome!!! Please Logitech, get rid of the stupid shiny fingerprint magnet z623, and keep making this! This is real sound!!!

Customer Review: Best Value Speakers for under $1000.00
Summary: 5 Stars

I have just purchased these speakers after searching through multiple shops looking for the best speakers for under $1000.00 (New Zealand). I looked at Bose, Harman Kardon, Jamo, JBL, Altec Lanseng, Edifier, and Logitech speakers, (as well as a few others that are not even worth a mention) and carried my iPod to compare quality. No I am not a 'hip hop' person, I prefer classical, swing, light rock, and popular music. I don't rely on a beat in my music to carry the music, I prefer to HEAR the music, not just feel it.

So after looking in multiple shops and listening to the music in multiple settings I found the following: Bose, Harman Kardon, and the JBL creature speakers had a lovely crisp base, and beautiful high pitch, but were completely lacking in the mid-range 256-4096 Hz. This is not a problem if all you want is the beat, but it is a major problem for those of us who like music with mid-range notes. altec Lanseng, Edifier, and Jamo had rumbly bases which did not carry a clear note, as well as missing the mid-range. Altec also had a hum when not in use but still turned on: this appears to be one of it's consistent problems.

What surprised me the most was that the Logitech Z 2300 speakers had not just a lovely crisp base and crystal clear tweeters but also had an excellent mid-range. I suspect that is because they were the only speakers to have a mid range output sized speaker to go with the tweeter in the two satellite speakers. The next best was the Logitech Z4 speakers which had a larger tweeter than the remaining brands. I think that the Harman Kardon Soundsticks II had the poorest midrange, but that is not surprising as they had the smallest tweeters, but they were on a par with Bose for quality of base and high-range music.

Finally there is the bonus of the price. The Logitech Z 2300 was the third best priced, beaten only by the Logitech Z4 and the JBL creature II speakers. The Z 2300 is by far the best value for money however (I purchased these for under NZ$200) and am happy that I didn't have to spend upwards of $800 for the Bose while getting better quality.

Reading some of the other reviews of various speakers, I note that only a few have searched as hard as I have. I would recommend these speakers any day for the music lover and the gamer. The only drawback is that you need a fairly big space for the subwoofer, which is 2-4 inches (5-10cm) bigger in all dimensions than any of the other subs in the range I tested.

Customer Review: Great Office Speakers!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was looking for a decent sound system for my home office. I considered not only "PC Speakers" but also portable and component systems. The portables seemed more for young kids who move the system around a lot (and most looked very unusual as well) and the component systems were very expensive and required a serious space commitment. Once a "PC" system was decided upon I considered 5.1 (5 speakers + Sub) systems versus 2.1 (2 speakers + sub) and 2.0 systems (2 speakers). The 5.1 systems took up too much space and really only work as designed if the speakers can surround the listener (not a possibility in my office). I decided on a 2.1 system to ensure adequate bass response. I researched the best 2.1 systems on Amazon and PC and Stereo review sites. The Logitech Z-2300 showed up on most all of the sites as a strong performer. I purchased the Logitech from Amazon just after a price drop to $110 and what a deal it is! I purchased this to mostly listen to music (Smooth Jazz, Classical and Classic Rock).

Comments on the system:
1) The system sounds great. I have listened to the music types above and it sounds great with all of them.
2) Volume is not an issue. It sounds great at all volume levels. I listen mostly at low and moderate levels (around 25-30 of max) but have cranked it up (to 75% of max as more would have lifted me off my chair) just to see what they sound like and they sound very clear.
3) Bass is not an issue. After some experimentation I listen to the Bass at about 45% of maximum. Maximum shakes the floor!
4) The mid and high tones also sound very clear.
5) The Speaker cables are proprietary and are 6' long.
6) The Sub-Woofer is a large cube. Make sure you have enough room under your desk
7) The controller (with 6' long cables) sets next to my keyboard and has volume, on/off (standby), bass and a headphone jack. I never have to crawl around the Sub-woofer for any setting and make instantaneous changes to volume and bass.
8) Setup was very easy - place the speakers, plug everything in and turn them on.
9) The Black and Grey/Silver complement my office perfectly!

Here is the bottom line - This is a high quality PC sound system! If you want Audiophile quality be prepared to spend 10x+ more, take up 300-400% more room and have a serious setup commitment. If you want an easy to setup, easy to use, great sounding PC system for a rock bottom price look no further.
