Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech X-540 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Subwoofer

Customer Review: The Logitech X-540 5.1 Speaker System is great for the money.
Summary: 5 Stars

These certainly will not compete with high end systems, but bang for the buck, these are a really good buy. The little 5(?) inch sub is not going to compete with high end bass reflex subs in either speed or bass, but then these do not sell for thousands of dollars, nor will the rest of the audio spectrum compare to really good 2, 3 or more way systems. My Ellis Audio and custom Holtz speakers with critical Q subs certainly shame them, but they also cost much more and that is for a pair, not 5 + 1. So, if you are looking for the ultimate, keep looking, but if you want a very good sub $100.00 system, look no more.

The one item that does occasionally come up short is the gain. On some inputs which have lower audio levels than they should, you may have issues getting the volume you might like out of these, but that is not really a speaker issue, on normal material you can get reasonable levels with reasonable sound quality, most often you'll have volumes in excess of what most will feel comfortable listening to!

I have not done exhaustive research, but to the extent that I have researched it, I have found nothing as good for the money. I purchased these for television, I have the Z-5500 system on my computer, and while it does give one a little more of everything, it does not embarrass the X-540 system, it's merely a bit better. For serious music listening, these are not what you want, but for TV or computer systems, they are just fine as well as a good buy.

Customer Review: Very happy with these
Summary: 5 Stars

I am very picky when it comes to speakers and music sound (incl. returning $200 PC speakers because they sounded too dull and midrange-heavy).

I love the X-540s. They sound airy and open; they reproduce a range of styles (classical, metal, electronica) very well across the frequency spectrum; and they're easy to set up and convenient to use, with the volume control pod offering volume, bass, headphone, and Logitech's "matrix" surround.

The center speaker has a great bracket to mount on top of your monitor, and all cables are color-coded for easy connectivity. The two rear speakers have very long wires. All speakers have stands that rotate around for best positioning in your environment. The build quality seems very solid.

I compared them with many other sets of speakers under $100 and - to my ears - they were the best I found. They also go seriously loud while sounding clear and clean!

A couple of cons:
- the speaker wires are hard-attached into the speakers; you'll need to get out the wirestrippers and tools to upgrade them; but this is only an issue if a cable rips or if you're a real tweaker
- the headphone port on the volume control is recessed, and my full-size headphones' plug (yes, it's a 3.5mm) doesn't fit (the plastic on the plug is too wide); but if you use earbuds etc. you should be fine

Overall I am very happy with my purchase and would buy these again.

Customer Review: Excellent value-for-money surround-sound computer speakers
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this set to replace a set of Altec Lansings that were 7 or 8 years old. A problem I'd always had with the old pair was the volume of white noise they generated upon being plugged into the power, and regardless of whether they were plugged into my computer. And they notified me of the end of their life by the sub-woofer starting to emit a thumping noise despite the power button on the speakers being off, and the speakers muted. So, in general, the suppression on those was a problem. No such defect on the Logitech X-540s. White noise is barely noticeable.

The design of the center speaker, which can clip onto one's monitor without any danger of scratching it, is ingenious. Also, the swivel stands on the other speakers to easily switch from a standing mount to a wall mount is very clever.

I also love the desktop controller, and the wisdom of providing an earphone jack right there. Evidently, whoever designed these things put a lot of effort into studying the scenarios in which computer sound systems are actually used--which include full-blast when alone in the house, and with headphones late at night.

The speakers are not as loud as I expected, based on the Altec Lansing settings, and I would probably not consider replacing the Yahama set I have in the living room with these. But for a 5.1 computer speaker sound system, at this price, I think this product is unbeatable.

Customer Review: How to use a remote with TV
Summary: 5 Stars

I use these speakers with my Sony LCD. They work just great for the price! The thing I was having a problem with was getting to adjust the volume of my tv with a cordless remote. It was driving me crazy and I had to sort it out! So after much to do. (my TV does not have a head phone jack) So oddly enough the answer was to use a cheap and the most simple universal remote that I could find. (one worked for a while then stopped so I had to replace with an even cheaper one) I say cheaper like $8 or something. These remotes are simple, which is why they work with this set up. I have a DVR player/cable box from Timer Warner cable. I plug the speakers into the cable/DVR box. in and out using a 3 to 1 gaming splitter. And the remote accesses a different (maybe more analog?) volume control then the Tv volume control. Ie..on my TV a white volume display on the top of the screen instead of the Sony display on the bottom. sounds crazy and i don't really know why this works but it does. So no getting up and down to adjust the volume! Hope this helps someone because I have seen many ask this question. And I had tried everything!
Good Luck and enjoy your speakers with TV. OH! It does not work with my DVD but I haven't tried running my DVD through cable box yet so maybe that would work?

Customer Review: Very good sound for very little money
Summary: 5 Stars

I just purchased this and wow it's louder than I had expected. It's not only loud but it has pretty good bass coming from the sub. I did not expect much bass from a tiny 5" low frequency driver but I guess the wood ported sub enclosure really helps the tiny bass driver put out strong bass. The satellites aren't that bad either. I thought they would be really tinny because of the small drivers but they do put out good midrange. High frequencies are clear too.

One of the cool features of this system is that the center channel can be mounted right ontop of your LCD monitor. It basically clips over the top edge. It has rubber cushions to protect your LCD and absorb vibrations. Keep in mind that the center channel can tilt but the other 4 sats are fixed and cannot be tilted. The sats could be mounted on the wall since the mounting plate rotates and it has a hole for a screw.

This system works only with 5.1 analog computer setups. It does not support digital optical or coaxial inputs. The system supports matrix mode which works with 2ch sources and feeds all speakers with sound. The wired remote has a volume and sub level adjustment knob and also a headphone jack and Matrix mode button. The headphone jack works even without powering on the speaker system.

This is a really great buy, so much speaker for so little money.
