Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech X-540 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Subwoofer

Customer Review: Great for the Price
Summary: 5 Stars

Honestly speaking when I first heard them, I was very disappointed as I didn't feel enough punch and planned to return them asap. Then I made some changes to the setup and they sounded completely different.
Here are some of the changes that I made and that might help you:
1) Place the woofer on a solid base. I initially had it on my carpet and it sounded terrible. All I heard was vibrations and no clear sound. I have it on a peice of cardboard now and I feel the punch.
2) The woofer has three wires coming out of it(green, black and pink). Since I have just one headphone jack on my laptop I was connecting just the green color wire to it. This meant that I always had to keep the matrix ON to get the sound from all the speakers. I bought a three way headphone thingy and connected the three ends of it to the three wires from the woofer and plugged the other end into my laptop. The sound quality improved drastically and they sounded very clear and completely different from what they sounded initially.
3) Since I use the 3 way headphone jack to connect to my laptop, I dont have to have keep the matrix ON to get sound from all the speakers. These speakers sound a lot better when matrix is off. It sounds is very suppressed with the matrix ON.
I made these changes and was listening at half base level and half the volume when my neighbor came complaining about his room getting shaken. This was when I decided against returning these speakers. These speakers have more than enough power to trouble your neighbors :)
I use these speakers with my 50 inch HDTV, PS3 and Laptop and they all sound great with these speakers.
A great buy!!!

Customer Review: Great setup for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like these speakers because they provide very decent sound (and volume) for the price. One word of caution, though. The subwoofer speaker is mounted on the outside bottom of the subwoofer cabinet, so be careful when you lift it that you don't put your fingers through the speaker. I would have liked to see some protection covering that speaker, but it still wasn't enough to take away a star.
Since I do a lot of audio work, I was looking for these speakers to give me a good auditory experience. You won't be able to use these to mix down a commercial CD, but they do provide good clean sound. The key is to find a good balance between the overall volume and the sub volume. The wired remote makes this easy, but since no two songs are mixed the same, you may have to adjust this balance more than once. The matrix button can make things overly bright (naturally, because you just popped 2 high end drivers into the array), but again, you can often balance that with more sub (or less overall) to get a decent mix.
I did find that the front speaker wires were shorter than they should be, but that only hurt me with the right front speaker. I just swapped the right front and left rear speakers (rear have longer wires) and the problem was solved without having to buy extension cables. Just make sure you plug the speakers into the correct jacks if you use this solution.
So my real rating would probably be 4 1/2 stars, taking away 1/2 for the exposed sub driver and short front speaker wires. But the quality and volume I get out this package was well worth the price, so I decided to round up. These speakers were a pleasant surprise.

Customer Review: AN $8.00 SOLUTION TO GETTING GR8 MUSIC FROM THIS UNIT ...
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm only interested in this unit for music output ... I originally bought a Logitech x-230 2.1 2 (30/70 watts) system to play music thru my .mp3 player at backyard get togethers ... The sound from the little speakers was great, the bass from the sub impressive, but it was limited in it's volume output so I decided to buy this one (70/140 watts) thinking it would double the volume ... One of the guys on my job told me that since it was surround sound that I'd probably not notice any great change in the volume output, which I didn't until I went to Radio Shack and bought a three-way headphone jack ($8) ... You see on this unit there are three wires that lead out to input from my .mp3 player instead of just one that's on the lesser unit, and common sense told me that all the sound input from my .mp3 player wasn't going into this more powerful unit ... Once I connected those three cables from this Logitech to my player via the three way, and switched off the Matrix mode on the remote, the sound quality and volume increased impressively ... I went with Logitect because I didn't want to go the route of a regular Boom Box type system, and wanted to stay under $100. while having a unit that handles deep bass as well as these Logitech systems ... Now I have it, and the system set up is both high tech and slick looking ... While my grand-kids think nothing of these unit when I pull it out to wow my friends with our oldies from the 60's and 70's, they think I'm so in tune with current technology ... In comparrison to them I guess I am, thanks to being around youngsters who keep this oldster hip to what's happening in audio now ... '0)

Customer Review: Logitech X-540 Speakers for TV sound
Summary: 5 Stars

Since there are lots of comments about the lead lengths, maybe some data would help (why is it not in the official specs?). Here are the approximate lengths that came with mine:
Power input cord: 6ft 6in (to sub)
Wired remote: 5ft 6in (from sub)
Audio input: 6ft 2in (Three 3.5mm male stereo jack plugs on each end; green (front); black (rear); orange (center+sub)
Center speaker: 7ft 2in
Front speakers: 5ft 3in
Rear speakers: 14ft 2in
There is also an 8in adapter with a green stereo socket on one end, red and white female RCAs on the other (for use with a video game console).
If you only have a single stereo output to feed these speakers you will only get sound out of the two fronts and the sub, unless you select matrix. Personally I find the matrix mode artificial sounding and hard to listen to, but it seems a waste to only use two of the five speakers so I piggy-backed two one-to-two stereo adapters to make three outputs and plugged in the green, black and orange input plugs (somebody suggested a Radio Shack Boostaroo, but I think that requires batteries - I get plenty of output with the passive one-to-three split). The rear speakers can then be placed alongside the front speakers and the center speaker puts out the sum of the two stereo channels. This gives a very acceptable sound when plugged into the headphone output of the TV and volume can be set with the TV remote. This sound is very much better than the sound from the TV speakers. After going through the experimentation to arrive at this setup I am very happy with this purchase.

Customer Review: Best sound system I've ever had!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used every type of sound system there is except 7.1, and I was not dissatisfied with this system. I've been studying for the best True 5.1 surround sound system for its price and here it is. The volume control is perfect for me because it lays to the left of my keyboard for me to adjust the sound quickly on the fly. Warning: depending on your speaker setup you'll spend a bit of time adjusting your individual speaker levels on your computer. The back speakers were too quiet for me: Maybe they were too quiet because I set all 5 speakers equally distant from me. The quiet rear speakers were easy to make louder by simply raising their levels in Windows.

I enjoyed gaming with this system. Games like Half-Life 2, Resident Evil 5, Dead Space (Really any game that supports 5.1 sound) sound brand new. It just feels great to hear sounds come from behind you than hear those sounds in front of you with them warped a certain way so that you know they came from behind. This system is great for identifying precisely what direction a sound came from, and it helps a lot in games where you need to know where a noise came from like Left 4 Dead.

Matrix mode is flawed and sometimes doesn't work with certain programs, but I don't really care or mind some videos on Youtube and Hulu only shooting audio out of the front speakers. Anything important to me works on all 5 speakers with excellent separation of sounds! I recommend this to anyone who wants a 5.1 sound system with an amazingly cheap price for the quality. I bought this for $85, including shipping.
