Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech V20 Notebook Speakers (Black)Customer Review: GREAT LOGITECH SPEAKERS Summary: 5 Stars
I just have to add my voice to all those who love these speakers. What a surprise to get them working and get what amounts to very enjoyable sound for pop, jazz, rock, folk, and, yes, even classical (particularly pieces with just 4 or 5 instruments). I was unhappy with the sound from my ASUS N71JQ-A1 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown), a product which is great in every other way. I was amazed upon hearing these speakers through my laptop with a USB connection only and no AC.
A potential word of caution to WINDOWS 7 users: these were not simple plug-and-play for my laptop. At first, Windows had difficulty finding a driver for them. Then, I had to go to the Sounds folder on the Control Panel and choose these speakers as my default speakers. Happily, I got a great customer rep at Logitech (Sophia) who explained it to me. So, if the speakers don't work immediately and your OS is WINDOWS 7, don't despair.
Further, the sound tends a bit towards the bass, and there is no way to adjust that from my rig. The sound, however, works very well for the Beatles, Mel Torme, Dave Brubeck, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Daughtry, etc. Although some have remarked that there may not be enough volume to be heard over a small crowd, I've had a dozen or so people talking and listening to Ella Fitzgerald as well as The Who from these speakers at 90% of their capacity without distortion detectable to my ears. As for their bouncing around at high volume, I solved that by putting them on rubber coasters.
These are great. They fit in their case in one of the pouches on my carrying case Case Logic VNC-17 17-inch Value Slimline Laptop Case (Black), and I'm ready to be a DJ wherever I go with the 170 CD's I have loaded on my hard drive. I'm getting another set of these speakers for my other laptop as well; I like them that much. It's a celebtration when you find a product that really works!
Customer Review: 4.5 Stars, though probably the best in class Summary: 5 Stars
This set of speakers is fantastic for what it is: USB powered with no Subwoofer.
Now, I don't consider myself an Audiophile but I AM an music addict. That said, I own about 10 different pairs of headphones (ranging from big ones to small ones to in ear etc) that have cost me anywhere from $5 to $300. In terms of speakers, I've owned a couple as well, from the popular 2.1 Klispchs to Dell ones.
I just had to write this review because having been using them more extensively these days, they are REALLY impressing me.
The V20s compared to:
Altec Lansing XT1s: Beats the snot out of the XT1s. Haven't tried out the XT2s, but oh my goodness. The XT1s distort with any sort of Equilizer usage, have almost no Bass response at all. Highs were good and that was about it. The V20s in comparison, lack a bit in the mids and highs, are adequate in Bass, and are VERY clear. With some equilizer tweaking on the laptop, I can get these to sound very very good, without the massive oomph of Bass I can get with plugged in 2.1s however.
Dell 2.1 Speakers: The V20s sound worse, but not too far off. The Bass is much weaker than the Dells, and it has trouble producing the same mids and highs, clarity is also inferior. If I could put my Dell speakers into the same form factor as these V20s, I would, but alas, it's not going to happen.
That said, don't expect these to sound as good as good 2.1s. Now I HAVE heard much worse 2.0s, (no sub) that required external power. But for the most part, plugged in 2.1 units with a sub will surpass this set easily. However, for what these ARE, and in factoring in the competition, they are great. With some equilizer work, they sound astounding when you look a little closer.. no sub and powered only by USB!!
Buy these from Amazon! I bought them for much more and I am satisfied, but at Amazon's price, it's a no brainer. You can take these on road trips, parties, whatever, and pump out some seriously good sounding music from your collection with the help of your laptop.
Customer Review: Very Very Good Portable Speakers Summary: 5 Stars
I've had the V20's for about a year and find them exceptional. I have them hooked up to my desktop because they provide superb sound, don't require a power plug, take little space, and are an attractive addition to your desk.
I agree that the cable connecting the two speakers could be longer, but the speaker set was designed for placement around a laptop, not across a table.
On the sound, I find it to be superb. Excellent bass, great sound separation (lows, mids, highs), and they're quite responsive (have a punch to them). I've compared the to a number of other smaller speakers and the V20's had a much better sound, even compared to ones that required separate power. Sound quality is a subjective, but I have and had $5,000+ home stereo systems most of my life and feel these little guys do a fantastic job.
I've read some feedback about the speakers jumping on your desk at high volumes. This will happen if you really jack up the volume. The sound produced at normal volumes is more than adequate for music listening. These things are not designed to fill up a large room with floor thumping sound. I've listened to music pretty loudly and have never had them jump. I wouldn't consider this an issue.
The speakers are attractive and are well made. They don't look cheap. One reason why they're permanently on my desk.
I strongly recommend these speakers. I think most people tend to agree due to the large number of reviews on Amazon for these speakers and the high average rating.
Customer Review: Rockin' Speakers Summary: 5 Stars
I have had these speakers about two months and they have worked GREAT
consistently from day one. I am running 64Bit Vista O.S on a Toshiba
notebook. These speakers are the GREATEST!! I have a close friend who bought these when they first came out and he paid a hundred smackers for them. I bought them on his recommendation. Now, I have read all the naysayers' reviews and quite a few mention the lack of depth & tone
quality and such.....come on now.... these are NOTEBOOK SPEAKERS people!
If you wish to have all that "exceptional quality" go out and pop a few grand and pick up some Cerwin Vega Studio Speakers and I would suggest a
high end tuner like Yamaha or Onkyo or such. Now, I would say, if you're not in a hurry, to drop in these in your cart and wait a few days and see if the price changes....I only paid 48.95 two months ago. Anyway, I am totally satisfied after at least 40 hours of playing them! BTW... for those you who are pretty much totally new to computers and wish to adjust the tone depth and such, you simply go to the Start Button, then click on the Control Panel button. On that screen you will see all the myriads of available junk your computer has on it. Look for the picture or Icon of a Speaker(s) and click on that. W/your speakers currently hooked up, you should see two or even three choices available with new Creative V20's already highlighted; simply click on on the Icon and a panel will open up allowing you to adjust the Treble, Base, and Volume etc.
Customer Review: Great sound, great portability Summary: 5 Stars
I really loved the sound on these, which was never "boxed-in" like I often get with speakers of this size and shape. Logitech continues to deliver high-quality peripherals.
Fedora Linux setup on this thing wasn't instant but otherwise just too easy. I plugged it in, went to the Soundcard Detection program, changed my default soundcard to these tiny powerhouses, restarted my Amarok player, and blasted away.
Beethoven Egmont Overture. Stravinsky The Rite of Spring. Shostakovich Symphony No 4. Radiohead selections from OK Computer. The Xenosaga Soundtrack. Pirates of the Carribean.
Stellar performance from these speakers on every application I put it through. I could feel the bass through my keyboard without killing the speakers, though supposedly, adjusting the volume it so that you can shake the floor is not practical or even maybe possible. But you can hear them outside my door and it sounds just as good as my 5.1 Altec Lansing setup on my desktop minus the floor subwoofer.
These are the perfect desktop replacement laptop speakers. If you want light, portable, easy-to-use and very decent-sounding speakers, these are great. However, as noted by others, beware of distortion at high volumes due to lack of power from the USB port.
PROS: Easy-to-use USB interface, great sound, extremely light and portable, great carrying case.
CONS: Won't shake your house...Not that you would be here if that was your goal, anyway.
