Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System with SubwooferCustomer Review: Freaking Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not an audiophile or a sound engineer, so I can't comment specifically on how its midrange compares to higher end studio products or the like, but I do love music with a passion and know the difference between good and ok. And these speakers are great! If you currently have a laptop or tv you want to add speakers to, go click "add to cart" before you even finish this review. A powered subwoofer alone will do amazing things for your audio quality, giving "crunch" and clarity at all ranges by taking some burden off your other speakers.
The speakers are fine quality and reproduce clear sounds beautifully (e.g. some Black Eyed Peas melody lines). I get a little nervous about cranking them all the way up with a grittier sound though (like the Black Keys), but haven't had any problems or what I can perceive as crackling from my speakers, but it's tough to tell with crackled being on the original track.
The sub puts out a substantial amount of bass, and has it's own bass control knob. I am very pleased with it. I have it under my desk and can hear it very well, thanks to the unidirectionality of low frequency noise. It will thump very well, and different bass types are very distinct (Peas' "Hey Mama" vs Outkast's "Bombs over Baghdad").
It has a control knob for volume which is independent of input, so you would set your laptop or tv volume in the mid-high range where it has the best quality and then use the speaker knob. It is on a separate disc thing which has two cables: one is a pigtail that plugs into the mic and speaker jacks, and the other runs to the sub and is not removable. It's kind of a lot of wires, and it sits funny if aesthetic appeal is important to you. I have too many cable running behind my computer to even notice, though.
There is an on/off switch and headphone jack on the volume pod as well. Be careful, the headphone jack bypasses the volume control, so a dim volume on the speakers could blast your ears if you plug in headphones without adjusting the volume elsewhere. I run the audio to my tv from the headphone jack on the volume pod, too, and I seem to have noticed better quality than running directly from my laptop.
If you are looking to put these in a studio, or you're the kind of person who would pay for Bose equipment, read the rest of the reviews and shop around before making a final decision. If you are just buying speakers for a laptop or computer, these are magical and will knock your socks off! The difference is so outstanding that I'm even considering buying a second one for my tv. It won't give me surround sound, but it would make a huge difference on the depth and intensity of the sounds, and at only a tenth of the price.
Description of Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System with SubwooferThe new Logitech S-220 Speaker System contains several upgrades to its predecessor, the S-200 Speaker System. Unlike the S-200, the new S-220 encompasses increased usability with a newly styled control base to manage improved acoustics, volume and VoIP connectivity. Bass tuning by the end user is often permanent once a setting is established. With the end-user experience at the forefront of Logitech's design strategy to minimize desk clutter the S-220 bass control is located directly on the subwoofer. This allows the end user to tune the speaker system with no concerns for any accidental control adjustments. Finally, the newly designed S-220 advantages improved acoustics for a smoother, rich experience to enjoy music, VoIP discussions or playing video games.
