Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Rumblepad 2 Vibration Feedback Gamepad

Customer Review: Ten years and counting
Summary: 5 Stars

- My Experience With This Controller -
In the ten years that I have been using this gamepad I have disposed of no less than 10 other peripherals for both PC and console. Aside from my Saitek X45, this is the only device which has stood the test of time. The rumble functionality (force feedback) is supported by very few games, so must people rarely utilize it. I, however, use a third-party controller profiler called PinnacleGameProfiler, and have for most of the controller's lifespan. This profiler supports force feedback and I utilize it in almost every game. It stills work perfectly.

- Layout -
The device is heavy enough to feel sturdy, and aside from a slightly shorter handle length mirrors the iconic Sony "DualShock" configuration. Two extra buttons are center-mounted below the Start and Select buttons. The first is a "Mode" buttons which alternates the mapping of the left thumbstick and the d-pad. This allows you to play games which support joystick with the d-pad rather than the thumbsticks for an "old-school" effect. The second button toggles force feedback functionality. This setting is detectable by a short vibration for off and a longer vibration (about one second) for on. Finally, the outer edges of the controller are slightly rubberized (visible in all three images.) I say rubber for lack of a better word, it's not actually rubber. Those who play extensively on Sony's console will know that the rubberized thumbsticks disintegrate and turn into a gooey mess over time. This controller does not suffer the same problem. In fact the surface texture of the thumbsticks is still entirely visible. Also, because the weight of the controller is supported primarily by your fingertips (against hard plastic) the rubber does not create such a bad sweat-insulating effect.

- Software -
The device is plug and play: no drivers need to be installed for the controller to be detected and installed by Windows. I originally began using this device on Windows 95, but it also works on 98 and XP just as well. I have not tested it on newer operating systems (Windows 7 was released about 8 months prior to this review) The included Logitech Game Profiler software is easy to understand and use, and seems to work well enough. The software supports basic macro functionality, custom pause durations, and a single (held only) shift key but lacks force feedback support, cycling commands, configuration hot-swap, and toggle shift keys. As I mentioned above, I use a different profiler so my experience here is limited, but I double-checked these things for the review. Also note some users complain of compatibility issues with Macs, though I would assume those have been resolved by now.

- Warnings -
Only two, one is the size of the controller. If you have large hands or grip your controller tightly this is not for you. Seek an Xbox style controller instead, as you will be less prone to cramping. The second warning is the USB cable: it FEELS very thin and feels quite flimsy, however I assure you I have overstretched and stepped on this controller cord many times in it's ten years of use and have never had any issues.

- Conclusion -
Wireless controllers suffer lag, require batteries, and are over-priced. This device is cheap (cheaper than $30 can be found) and time-tested and does not compromise on any features. In my opinion and experience this controller may not be the most flashy item but you can be assured you will get your money's worth out of it.
