Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech MX 518 High Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Metal)

Customer Review: Superior Gaming mouse and excellent mouse overall
Summary: 5 Stars

I like this mouse a lot. With the right mouse pad (a Microthin Wow!Pad from Office Depot), this mouse glides beautifully, never seen one better. The main buttons are easy to push (only Microsoft does this right also). The forward and back side buttons are a little small but work fine. The scroll wheel is not as nice as the MS Intellimouse 4 as it still clicks and is harder to roll. Never used the tilt wheel on the MS mouse. It is gaming where this mouse shines. The mouse tracks no matter how fast I move the mouse. The mouse never sleeps so it always responds perfectly. Frankly, I have not yet found any use that I needed to change the mouse resolution (i.e. speed) but in trials that is easy to do.
Feel is good, middle to small sized so fits most of my family. Cord is thin and a little stiff so it does not always lay completely flat (I have not found on that did). Very lightweight. Contoured nicely to fit the cupped hand.
Worked with Win XP as soon as I plugged it in, drivers and program loaded with no hassle.
Nice job, Logitech!

Customer Review: Is there a better mouse?
Summary: 5 Stars

Over the years you'll probably use a box full of mice and may never even give any of them a 2nd thought. Maybe you will when one of them is just really bad but, otherwise they are what they are. The MX 518 is nothing remarkable which IMO is a good thing. I plugged it in and I don't even think about it anymore. I use it everyday for every possible task, gaming included and never have a single issue with it. Even plugged in to a KVM switch all the buttons function, and there's never a glitch.
I've used a lot of wireless mice and finally just gave up and went back to the old tried and true wired version. I don't get the big attraction to wireless mice? You have to charge them which is like adding a step so, no thanks.
By the way, normally Logitech's software is terrible, looks like some who review the MX 518 can verify that. I use Linux so... Logitech's included software goes in the trash can as soon as the package is opened. =)

Hopefully Logitech won't change the MX 518, it's perfect just how it is.

Customer Review: Works Great - Best mouse I've owned
Summary: 5 Stars

Like most people I've used many mice over the years and I really like this one.

I'm right handed with average size hands and this fits perfectly into the palm of my hand. The button action is precise and the scroll wheel is definitely much superior to a standard mouse that seems to always move one extra click after you have finished scrolling, but no issues here. The Forwards and Backwards buttons are a nice feature that I cannot be without any more. The mouse motion across a mouse pad is very smooth and has a good feel to it.

I didn't install the setpoint software because quite honestly I don't need any special button customization, and with one of my other logitech mice I had great difficulty finding a version that actually worked properly (I build many computer systems so it was not from lack of knowledge or for lack of trying, setpoint sometimes just does not work well).

If you are looking for a precise, solid mouse then this is a great place to start.

Customer Review: dpi settings on the fly, no software needed
Summary: 5 Stars

i thought higher sensitivity would not make a difference in a mouse. i was wrong! this optical mouse made a big difference... from working with images in photoshop to playing games like bf2142. the smooth motion helps with accuracy. i chose this model over the more expensive g5 because this one has two side buttons (g5 only has one) and the dpi settings are hardware based (the g5 requires software installation before the user can change dpi settings). no need for usb drivers, works right out of the box with winxp and/or win2k.

only thing i hate is the simulated metallic dents on the surface. looks ugly to me. oh and beware of the laser that tracks movement. it does not turn off when you lift the mouse past a certain height unlike other brands of optical mouse. dont ever clean the bottom of the mouse when it is still plugged in the usb port. you might hurt your eyes by accidentally looking at the red laser. it is much brighter than the ones they use at grocery store scanners.

Customer Review: Best Gaming/everyday use mouse yet!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this mouse for three years now and all I've got from it is satisfaction. It's a very accurate, light and ergonomic mouse that just feels right when in hand. Many useful buttons on the mouse that don't give you that cheap feeling some mice do and the texture is nothing less than perfect (if you keep your hands clean and be courteous to your computer gear).
It IS chorded so it's relatively lighter than other wireless mice but the chord could get a little annoying if you're really used to wireless.
Another amazing thing about this mouse is the support behind it. Logitech has one of the most understanding and willing to help support center with people who seem to actually want to help you in-case of a problem. I have fallen in love with Logitech brand mainly for that specific reason.
I definitely recommend this mouse to anyone, and especially the gamers. Although they could have gone with a cheaper price tag, you will not regret making this purchase.
