In simple terms: great mouse.
I bought this mouse about 2 years ago, and have another 5 additional mouses in use; the G5, G7, G9, Razer Copperhead, MX Revolution.
1) This mouse handles almost as fluidly as the newer G-series. Handles internet browsing, gaming, other application uses just fine. I wish the bottom could glide a tad smoother like the G7 and G9.
2) This mouse is rugged/built to last. I only bring my MX-518 with my laptop when I travel around, because this thing can take punishment. I've stepped over, dropped, chucked, spilled water over this thing so many times yet I actually never had to buy a second pair. My MX has so many scratches on the top panel you would hardly make out the logitech symbol on top, but it still works like a charm!
3) The only possible drawback to this mouse is how easily you can press the back and forward buttons located on the left side of the mouse. I have big hands and sometimes my thumb slides on those buttons. Though, to me it's a very minor problem :)
This mouse is still my favorite today.

I recently had problems with my old mouse and decided it was time for a replacement. Having been an avid gamer for some time now and after distroying several mice in the process. I literally wore them out! I decided it was time for a new mouse. After searching several types and brands of mice I decided on the Logitech MX518 Optical gaming mouse. I am not disappointed. the feel is comfortable in my hand and after hours of demolishing other opponets on the net, I feel as though I had been playing for only minutes . The mouse itself is comfortable to hold in your hand with a pair of buttons built into the side of the mouse for quick backward and forward movements although for my fat fingers they took some getting used to.
You can change the weight charastics on the fly and depending on the game that your interested in However not all of the games you may play will recognise the "forward" and "Backward" motions of these buttons for those that do it like the feel of a fine weapon in your hand . The action is smooth and precise and Deadly accurate I would Highly recommend it

I highly recommend this mouse (for right handed users). It is quite accurate, and the ability to switch resolutions on the fly really comes in handy(especially in FPS'). As with any technology purchase I recommend testing one out before purchasing. While I love the feel of the logitech gaming mice, others have pointed out that they can be less comfortable then comparable Razor mice (i.e. Diamondback Game Mouse Plasma,etc). For me I prefer the feel and weight of the logitech. It feels like a quality piece of hardware and has worked flawlessly for me for almost 2 years. I am currently awaiting a Logitech G5 Laser Mouse (931376-0403),that I found brand new on sale for $24.99, but I look forward to continued use out of my MX518 as my laptop mouse. If you want a quality gaming mouse, but don't feel like breaking the bank with the bleeding edge...Get this mouse! You won't regret it!Customer Review: Great mouse for larger hands

Over the years I've tried quite a few mice to replace my old Logitech MX700 that died on me after years of faithful service. The problem I've run into is finding a mouse that is comfortable for my large hands (6'1" tall and 300lbs). Some of the more expensive ones I've tried were the MS Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 (hated it) and Logitech MX1100 (it's 'ok'). I absolutely love the MX518! I am a software developer, so I use the mouse extensively. It is very comfortable and has always been responsive. I work in both a Linux (RHEL5.4) and Windows environment (XP, Win7) and the mouse works great across the board with respect to being detected by the OS and operating correctly. I don't use the mouse for gaming so I can't speak to its performance their. I was so impressed with my first MX518 that I bought a 2nd one four months later to keep in my laptop bag for working at customer sites (I always forget to take the mouse from my desk with me). I've used the 1st MX518 I bought for 40hrs/wk. since mid-August without a single issue. You won't regret buying this mouse!Customer Review: Worth the Price

Yea $40 does seem like a lot for a mouse, but its well worth it. I haven't had a single problem with it yet, i plugged it in for the first time and it worked fine. You don't even need to install the software that came with it if you don't want to, its plug-and-play. But if you don't like the configuration of the buttons, like the thumb buttons on the side, you can change them in the software to do something else. And 1800 DPI...yea if you don't want to move your hand while using your mouse its great. 1800 sets it to maximum and ultra high mouse sensitivity which not even I'm used to, and can be set to as low as 400. Also, the software allows you to set up whatever sensitivity you want by setting 5 sensitivity levels which can be changed by pressing the + or - buttons on the mouse. This is a life saver while playing games online, literally.
You can trust Logitech's products, I've never had problems with them and I've bought mouses from them before, and also a web cam and microphone. It's 40 bucks for a mouse that wont need to be replaced later.
