Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech MX 518 High Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Metal)Customer Review: Excellent Mouse Summary: 5 Stars
The very first gaming mouse I bought was MX510, the red ladybug. That was about... 5 years ago. It was excellent mouse. Although they were not many function buttons, the build quality and grip was excellent. The most recent mouse I used was G5. It's also very nice. However, I had to give my G5 to my little brother, so I had to get a replacement. So I got this MX518 mouse. Same design as MX510 and predecessor, this mouse design and build quality holds up till this day. This mouse was actually designed and came to market about 5,6 years ago. I remember the first day it came out. Although I didn't buy at that time (cause I had MX510), this mouse had excellent design for mouse users. The grip is excellent. The side buttons are in the right position. The DPI control could be made better, but in good position. The build quality will last you at least a year, and it feels firm. The bottom of the mouse is also made well to withstand rough surface. The wheel also feels nice. THE ONLY CON about this mouse is the texture. If you smoke or eat while using this mouse, the mouse will get DIRTY. It will stack some stain on left and right buttons of the mouse. So you need to constantly clean your mouse. It's acceptable considering this mouse was designed 6 years ago, and it's EXACT SAME mouse quality and design produced today. Today's gaming mouse has texture of unstainable, but this mouse was made before that idea. This mouse also provides with HIGH DPI capability. Some say this mouse doesn't provide enough DPI compared to others, but remember this. Human cannot feel the difference nor handle anything over 800DPI. So no matter. Overall, this is one of the best mouse ever created with firm grip, good build quality, good design, and excellent Setpoint feature.
Customer Review: Comparison to Razer Abyssus Summary: 5 Stars
I was using a laptop wireless mouse on my desktop computer for gaming after my old HP mouse died. It ran out of batteries, I borrowed my brothers Razer Abyssus and was hooked on gaming mice. After a week or 2, he wanted his Abyssus back, so I started shopping for a new mouse. This one struck me as it keeps your fingers off of the mousing surface, greatly reducing friction, and it has more buttons than the Abyssus which is a standard 2 button/wheel layout.
This mouse has served me extremely well over the past 2 weeks. It is shiny and the metal surface is kind of...lame...but function over form is my mantra.
Note: The Abyssus does have a higher resolution setting (3000dpi or something) but it is too sensitive for anyone with normal human reflexes. The 1800 setting on this mouse works great.
I used both setpoint and Windows 7 drivers with no issues thus far.
Pros:
Price
Shape keeps fingers off of table/mouse pad
Quite a few buttons - way more than I am used to
Nice wheel, much much much quieter than the Abyssus one (which squeaked loud enough to wake my girlfriend!)
Cons:
Optical tech is a little less accurate than laser
No way to switch mouse polling rate, you can download a USB rate switcher, however this is a pretty involved process. The Abyssus has a nifty switch on the bottom beside the DPI switch to change from normal 125Hz (8ms response time) to 1000Hz(1ms response time).
Overall: If you like gaming mice with multiple buttons but do not want to get in the $50+ range, I would wholeheartedly recommend this mouse.
Customer Review: Best Gamers mouse I've used, after dumping 20+ trials Summary: 5 Stars
I've been an avid gamer since Wolfenstein 3d. I've always used a simple 3 button mouse. Since manufacturers started adding wheels to the middle button, a bunch of us avid gamers who use the middle mouse button as our "move forward" key have been left out to try. As we move forward the wheel moves and it switches our weapon and we die. End of story. I've ben stuck using the most sacred 3 button logitech wingman gaming mouse with a ball for about 6 years now. I find a new replacement on ebay now and then to keep a backup.
Now back to the story. I keep trying new optical mice with the wheel, but all have the same result, a wheel that moves too easy with the push. Either back to the store or into my drawer it goes. Well then my gaming buddies and I gave this one a whirl. Well after a few nights of Battlefield 2 and after reading some good reviews, we like it, like it a lot. We did open our mouses up and bend the wheel spring to make the wheel much more firm to spin. Now we find it is a great replacement.
Of ALL the optical mice available, this is the ONLY one that works good for those who use the middle button as a movement button in gaming. I highly recommend this mouse. In fact I just ordered my "backup" to throw in a drawer because knowing Logitech, they'll discontinue it for a "better" model that will ruin such a great thing. If you are looking, stop here and click "BUY" while you can.
Logitech, if you read these, how about making a 3 button optical gaming mouse with no wheel but 3 full sized buttons on the top and 1 or 2 side buttons, that is all.
Customer Review: Finally a mouse without annoyances Summary: 5 Stars
I've gone through about 6 different mice, and each one had their pros and cons (mostly cons). I finally found the MX518, and trust me, you don't know what you're missing until you've used it. *Edit: how did I find it? On SK-Gaming, there are tons of threads about "what's the best mouse"? This mouse came up so frequently that it seemed like a no-brainer.
This is the first time I can use a mouse and never have to worry about unexpected friction or hiccups. It controls with extreme precision and ease. At first, it was a little hard for me to get used to the shape and size, since it feels different from other mice I've used...but once I got used to it, it's flawless.
I am also a pretty avid gamer, and since I got this mouse, my performance has gone up noticeably. In fact, that's the reason I got this mouse to begin with: my biggest weakness in-play was my inability to consistently click quickly on small units in battle. With the MX518, those kinds of dumb problems go away.
Another thing I love is that even if I used it for hours, my hand feels completely rested and fresh. No more taking quick hand breaks, stretching it out or what not.
It's also very easy to customize the speed and feel of the mouse using the software. I've read some complaints about it, but I can't see any way to improve it.
Coupled with my Steelpad S&S mousepad, it's so much more fun to get on the computer. Like upgrading car audio, you really don't know what you're missing until you get rid of your outdated junk and try the best.
Customer Review: Good enough for me Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using this mouse for about two months now with no problems. I have not installed any software specifically for the mouse. I just let Windows Vista do its thing for driver installation.
I had a Microsoft mouse that I bought 8 years ago that finally started acting up on me. I play a good number of click-heavy games (Aquaria, Heroes of Newerth, Starcraft 2, etc), so I wanted a mouse that had gotten favorable reviews from other gamers who use it like I do. That said, I haven't seen any evidence that this mouse is actually constructed specifically to handle heavy clicking more so than any other mouse from a good manufacturer.
It's marketed primarily as a gaming mouse because of the extra buttons, which are programmable, though I haven't tried out that aspect. Two of the buttons are preset to raise and lower mouse speed, which can be useful for those FPS games where you need finer control as a sniper and faster mouse speed as another player class. To be honest, if you don't need the extra buttons, or you don't play games often, I highly suspect just about any mouse from a major manufacturer will do the trick.
My only complaint is that I really hate the distorted metal look of the mouse. Lots of manufacturers try to create futuristic looking mice targeted towards gamers. I think there are a lot of successes in that area, but this is not one of them.
Other than that, this mouse has been working great for me. We'll see how it holds up throughout the years.
