Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech MX 518 High Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Metal)

Customer Review: Forget all those *OTHER* mice, and GET THIS ONE!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been gaming for all of my life, and after getting this mouse I decided that having never reviewed any other product, I should review this one. I did my research before I got this mouse, and noticed only one review here, so hopefully this will help some of you out.

This mouse is amazing, comfortable (even for large hands), fast, precise, and worth every cent I paid for it. I got it for a shade under $40, at Amazon.com, it was the cheapest place I could find it. MSRP = $50

DPI = 1600

This matters in games because the higher the DPI, the faster the mouse will move with less effort. In contrast, the lower the DPI, the slower the cursor will move with more effort. In effect, high DPI for navigation in fast games like UT 2k4 and CS. Low DPI for sniping. Awesome!

15 g of acceleration (480 ft/s squared)

I own a Microsoft Wireless Suite (Optical Mouse 2.0) and there is obviously lag whenever I move the mosue too quickly, not so good for gaming. I did a little math after looking at the specs on this mouse, and you would have to move the mouse faster than 327 mph for it not to be able to track your movement (assuming that's not impossible and you have a big enough mouse pad!) This mouse is really ergonomic and I think it's important to note that your thumb is supported completely off of the mouse pad. For those serious gamers: there are those of you who like the thumb on the mousepad for precision control (I suggest teh Razor for that) and then there are the majority who don't like the thumb on the mousepad. Get this mouse, your pinky and thumb will not be touching the mousepad. This mouse is very light and slick and easily glides on the mousepad. However, I recommend a plastic-type mousepad over the cloth for maximum precision. Mostly because it glides easier on this surface than any other.

The only beef I got is: it's pricey for a mouse! But it's worth it!

I won this mouse at the 2006 E3 from a very cute Logitech rep, and I have to say it's the most amazing mouse I've ever owned.

Pros:
Design - I really love the left to right slope design in mice. I am so used to this design that if I use a regular/flat mouse I usually end up right clicking on everything. Mouse isn't tiny, good for my huge hands.

Tracking - You know how when you move some optical mice really fast the pointer may sometimes go the opposite direction. It's like when you see something spinning in low light, sometimes it looks like it's spinning in the opposite direction. A lot of older mice suffer from this. The MX518 never has this problem. Like the more expensive Laser mice, this mouse never misses a beat. It's truly amazing. The mouse also works on every surface save a mirror, have tried several mouse pad designs in the past, each one works great.

Sensitivity - Switch your mouse DPS from 100dps to 1600dps with a button press (+ and - buttons above and below the mouse wheel). (3 pre-sets, that are adjustable, handy)

Price - $48 here, but I've seen lower, and it's worth every penny.

Cons:
Button Placement - Sometimes you tap the thumb buttons on accident or the sensitivity buttons. Easy to overcome.

Cord - it's long, would be nice if it came short with an extension for those of us who plug their mice into their keyboards.

Drivers - Bloated, and the Mouse and my G15 keyboard drivers are seperate. Really Logitech, you can't get the keyboard programs to integrate with the mouse programs? Ah well, at least the programs running fairly quietly. Until they need an update. Just update the program, don't tell me you're gonna do it.

Great product. it's been around a LONG time, and with good reason, it really is an amazing mouse.

Too bad there's 240+ reviews on Amazon for it already. Ah well,

Customer Review: Excellent Mouse
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, so let me start off by saying, I practically live on my computer. Whether working, gaming, or even eating, you can be sure that I'm on my computer at all times.

Having said that, I had purchased this mouse approximately 9 months ago from Amazon, along with a G11 keyboard. Both were shipped out promptly and arrived in a few days time.

This mouse has done everything it's supposed to, and then some, without even a flaw after 9 months of intensive use. The plastic cover with the metal design, prevents your hand from slipping, and the thumb mold provides excellent comfort. The precision buttons are perfectly placed for intensive gaming, and the document switch button is convenient when needing to minimize a full screen program when ALT+TAB won't. Above the thumb mold are two buttons, whose main purpose seems to be only for web browsing. One is for going forward a page, and the other going back. Where they are placed is optimal for web browsing, as all you need to do is shift your thumb slightly and hit either one of the buttons based on your need. Easily beats having to move the mouse to the designated buttons at the top of the browser. They can be reprogrammed for whatever you desire, but out of the box, this appears to be it's main intent.

The durability of this mouse is, for my use, unprecedented. The mouse practically looks, and definitely works, the way it did when I first got it. The only problem with this mouse I've had, is the laminate covering the plastic strip in which the precision buttons, scroll, and document switch is located, comes off rather easily. This has no affect on the mouse's performance, and is for looks only as it provides a glossy black appearance on the strip.

Overall, this is an excellent mouse at an excellent price. It is highly recommended that you look no further, and get this mouse. Based on my experience, you will not find a mouse better than this, for the price.

Customer Review: Now this is good 'old' tech

It says something that the MX-518 is still widely available despite being an older design than pretty much anything else currently out there (and yes, that includes the free mice Dell ships). Not to mention the fact that it's still marketed as gaming hardware, despite the fact that such products usually get updated on a yearly- if not monthly- basis. Take another Logitech product for example, the G15 keyboard, which is on its 4th or 5th iteration now depending on whether you count variants. A wired, non-laser, lightweight, 4-button+wheel design, the MX-518 might look pretty lame compared to some of the newer models offered by Razer, Logitech, Microsoft, or what have you. Looks can be deceiving, though: the MX-518 is an extremely accurate, reliable, and comfortable pointing device.

I've used an MX-518 for over 3 years, during which it saw extensive daily use both for work and games. Aside from some of the paint wearing off, it works just as well today as it did when I got it. The precision of this mouse is such that it's really not distinguishable from much more expensive laser mice. The buttons are fully configurable and very well placed; it's second nature using them and does not cause any finger or wrist strain even after hours of use. If you need to adjust sensitivity on the fly, there's controls for that as well. The shape is ergonomically superior without being totally weird, and it functions well with or without a mousepad. It is also extremely tough- I've dropped it, stepped on it, tripped over the wire... you name it, it's survived it. On that note, it isn't a wireless and that's a plus in my opinion- it really seems the batteries on wireless mice die at the worst possible times.

If you're looking for a high grade mouse that doesn't break the bank, look no further. The MX-518 is the champ of its class and will be for years to come.

I gotta say this is my second mouse from logitech, and I am happy that I bought it. Work-Productivity is a big issue in my opinion and this mouse seems to help me move faster whatever the task. Normal mouses also work fine, but when it comes to crunch time the extra buttons help me cut down on time.

I will not compare this to other mouses...every mouse is different in its own way. I suggest you try things out for yourself if possible before buying them. If you can afford the $40 bux though, and want productivity, and play some fast action games, this mouse will make you happy. If so, go get a RatzPadz or some hard surface mouse pad that was made for gamers. This will allow your mouse to glide with minimal friction when you move it. If you dont really play games, then go get a mx510 cause its a little cheaper and still should do a good job.

I got it primarily cause I was happy with my old wireless mx710 which broke mysteriously..lol. The 518 has a real good response that will take getting used to, but I know thats not an issue, thats a good thing. I know from experience. muahaha....

I just got it today...and I can't disagree with this mouse one bit. In summary...this mouse is QUALITY baby.

18-09-05 >> 1 month later it is performing just as good. the 1600 DPI helped me improve my Quake3 accuracy. i'm going to buy some slicks/skids tape to make it glide better. Or I might spray my table top with silicone (cheap alternative..get it at walmart)...i don't DPI switch in games...thats what the CFG file is for - duh!!...why switch your DPI in a game...don't get it...maybe in windows gfx editing work versus a webdesign program..yea u wud maybe switch then...oh well. i wud say this mouse kinda worth it.
