Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech MX 518 High Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Metal)

Customer Review: Amazing Product
Summary: 5 Stars

Ease of use (5/5): Simple plug and play. It came with a driver that I don't use. All the buttons are programmable with most of the new games out there. I didn't have to do anything! I was able to assign buttons in World of Warcraft and the Call of Duty series easily without having to place in the driver CD.

Construction Quality (5/5): Very solid. Doesn't attempt to be super-aesthetically pleasing or innovative. The little groove for your thumb feels great! The mouse is solid, and yet light enough so that it doesn't cause wrist pain after hours of use.

Value for money (5/5): This kind of gaming mouse for $35? There's no question that it's worth the money. The other fancier mice out there cannot compare.

Reliability (4/5): The only reason that I give this a 4/5 is because I recently had to replace my old one. I simply ordered another one. The red light that interfaces with the optical device was not working, and upon opening up the mouse I saw that a part of the circuit had short circuited. There was some white caked powder on the chipboard. I couldn't determine what it was, so it could have been that something on the circuit fried or that I had spilled something and shorted the circuit.

Gaming (5/5): Absolutely The precision is unbelievable. I have a few mice: your typical dell $20 mouse, a wireless mouse, and my girlfriend's 'gaming' mouse. The wireless mouse, being wireless, is terrible for gaming. The dell mouse, while it is great for word processing, is terrible for gaming. The cursor would move every so slightly every time I click down to shoot. The acceleration when I try and move across the screen just seems...off. It's always either too fast or too slow. My girlfriend's 'gaming' mouse feels like someone simply put the Dell mouse into a cool-looking case. This Logitech mouse, however, has amazing accuracy. Everything about it is exact. It goes where I want it to go, and it shoots where I want to aim it, becoming an extension of my arm. After my mouse broke I simply couldn't use another mouse, even for word processing until my replacement came in overnight mail!

In short: I highly recommend this mouse for anyone, from the office worker to the casual gamer, to the super nerd! You will not be disappointed. I hope they keep making this mouse, because I'm pretty sure I'll keep breaking mine. Guess I'll just have to keep ordering more :)

Customer Review: I have 3 of these
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought my first mx518 years ago and I have bought 2 more, not because my first one malfunctioned in any way, but because I wanted one for each computer. I've tried many different mice; I always come back to the mx518.

I was just reading the 1 and 2 star reviews of this product and was moved to write this review.

1) I see complaints of it being too big or too small. Obviously, hands come in different sizes and shapes. Mice are normally packaged and not on display for testing in stores; it is difficult to judge how they will feel. With respect to the way it will feel in your hand, buying a mouse, unseen, online, is an awful lot like buying shoes online - somewhat of a gamble. This isn't a radically large or small mouse, so I don't think it is helpful to complain of the size in reviews.

2) I also see a lot of complaints about buttons ceasing to work. With every possible product, there is always a chance of defect. All I can say is, all 3 of my mice still work perfectly and one is about half a decade old. I am not gentle with them. Part of the reason I have stuck with this model is the amount of abuse mine have weathered. I've used my old mouse all day and night, most every day. My setup is precarious and my mouse falls on the floor several times a day. I don't worry about it functioning after a fall anymore. Also, I play a lot of games, so those extra buttons get plenty of use, too. In my experience, these are hard-to-kill mice.

I have only one complaint. The software needs to have more profiles. Keymapping is important to me. At most, I can set it to dynamically switch between game mode and windows mode. I'd like to be able to set different games with different keymappings, but I can't (I've resorted to assigning shift ctrl and alt combinations to my extra mouse buttons for gaming mode and within the games themselves assigned settings like shift-alt-q to hotbar slots). It already has the ability to detect games; I'm not sure why they didn't take that next logical step. Still, this isn't a problem with the mouse itself.

For me, this is a reliably tough mouse, a perfect fit, with good mappable buttons and precise control. If I find myself with yet another computer, I'll be buying this model for a fourth time.

Customer Review: I love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

My 2 year old loves to press buttons. So often times he'd like to go up to the computer and start fiddling around with the optical mouse we got with the computer we bought. Long story short, he basically ruined the mouse after smacking it around a few times. So I figured if I was gonna get a mouse I should get a decent one at least. After searching all around I stumbled upon the MX518. I've always loved the way Logitech's peripherals looked and felt and I'm here to tell you that the MX518 is no exception.

First off, I did like the way the mouse design looked from web pcitures (that is the size, button placement, curvature, etc...). But I wasn't too sure about the "dented" looking paintjob. But after having it a couple weeks it does grow on you and now I think it looks pretty cool. Secondly, this is by far the best mouse I've ever held. The shape of it is perfect for my hand and the rubber surface is awesome for grip. Basically the design of this mouse is top-notch.

Now for some of the features. First, the adjustable sensitivity buttons. Now I've seen some reviews where people have complained about the placement of the buttons, especially the + button. But to be honest I haven't had any problems with hitting the + button at all. It just takes a slight hand adjustment, but nothing that will throw you off your game. But as for the feature itself, I really enjoy it. I don't use it too much at the moment, but I definately see potential for it in some games. Maybe I'll be able to utilize it more in the future. The 2 main buttons feel very clicky and responsive as well. The mouse wheel too has decent resistance to help better select weapons for FPS without "over-scrolling". And the 3rd button works well too for instantly switching to a commonly used weapon. The front and back buttons are nice additions as well. I don't use these that much either at the moment but they feel great and aren't too hard to reach.

All in all I think this is a great mouse for a great price. I can't say enough good things about this device, it was a wise purchase and another plus is that it works great in concert with my Belkin N52 speedpad (another great device). You should buy one now...go on and do it. You know you want to.

Customer Review: Works Great, Kills n00bs
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this now for 2 years when I built my high-end gaming machine. It's still going strong and I've had no problems with it. I play everything from Counter-Strike: Source to Empire: Total War and I've noticed no delays or any other issues. Plus, saying this is easy to use is an understatement. Not only did I just plug it and start playing, but the mapping is totally cake. Is there better gear out there? Sure, but this does just fine and is certainly more cost-efficient.

The extra buttons are not only laid out ergonomically, but they're responsive and easy to hit too. I have Ventrilo mapped to Mouse 4 (the closet side button to your palm, and the largest) and all my other applications voice programs to Mouse 5 (the smaller side button furthest from your hand). Because of that I'm able to easily talk with my clan/guild/whatever on Ventrilo, while griefing n00bs or yelling at them to stand on the f***ing point in TF2 at the same time. I mainly use my mouse as a point and shoot clicker, along with push-to-talk for my voice programs, while using the keyboard for most of my commands, but it could just as easily be interchanged with anything else. My cousin also has one of these, and he maps his alternate weapons to the side keys, allowing him to do all of his attacks and hotswapping based solely on the mouse.

Now, the primary thing most gamers are going to be concerned about is accuracy and response time. Both are far and away excellent for this mouse's price tag. I constantly play a sniper on TF2, and snipe people with my AK on CS:S. Accuracy and response is excllent, and more often than not, I win those duels. I've never been dominated by another sniper, but I dominate other snipers (including ones who are on the top of the leader boards when I join servers) daily, and I easily imitate FPS Doug in CS:S.

The Bottom line? This mouse is comfortable, accurate, responsive, durable and affordably priced. It's all your going to need as a gamer unless you're also raking in 10k a month and can afford the best of the best. But, even then, you'll be scraping off very little time. This mouse can easily compete with the much more expensive laser and infrared mice that are on the market.

Customer Review: A Great Mid-Range Gaming Mouse
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my second Logitech MX518 mouse purchase since it was introduced. Prior to that I owned a MX510. I simply wore out the first two. The optical light (laser?) failed on my previous MX518 after a very long period of fast-paced, hardcore FPS gaming as well as doing some CG work and general use. I find a pressure sensitive graphics tablet such as WACOM's better suited for more precise graphics work, but for general use the MX518 works well. I love having the ability to quickly adjust the mouse's precision on-the-fly as well as several other functions using the on-board buttons rather than having to stop and adjust them through a program. Just set the functions wanted in the initial setup and off you go. The mouse buttons can also be set up for some game specific control functions.

My primary complaint about my first two Logitech MX500 series mice was their tiny, bottom glide pads. They had a tendency to shift or come loose after awhile. They could easily be lost or were difficult to reattach because of their tiny footprint. Often a single drop of super glue was too much and would squeeze out around the sides and cause problems if not cleaned before it set up -- very tedious. Logitech did not offer replacement pads. Finally found some third-party replacements (steelseries brand) through Amazon.com that worked fine. The latest incarnation of the MX518 appears to have remedied this problem by using much larger glide pads. The newest version works as expected and satisfies my varied needs. Only time and use will determine its longevity, but if it is anything like my previous one, it is well worth the money spent.

Therefore, I can easily recommend Logitech's MX518 Optical Mouse to those seeking a mid-range, mid-priced mouse both for gaming and for other uses requiring more precise cursor control. For the buck$, it certainly beats Microsoft, HP and most other comparable mice that I have tried within those mid-ranges. I cannot compare it to higher priced ones simply because I either have not tried or cannot afford them. Their is simply no comparison to the cheaper or old ball type mice.
