Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech MX 518 High Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Metal)Customer Review: Better than expectation! Hesitant after some reviews, but EXCELLENT! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, very first review, but here it is. I looked at this mouse at Best Buy after my old piece of crap mouse decided to start squeaking. Humorous, but overall annoying. I saw a few people complain about the mouse, but I honestly have to disagree. I have relatively big hands and the size was a concern, but this is just right and the curves on it are perfect for my hand. Another concern was whether or not it was Mac compatible, which originally it's not, but I did some researching and found that there's a program out there called Steer Mouse (Google it and it should be the top listing. You can even get it off of apple's store [For free] as I did), which someone else also mentioned, which also met my expectations and even passed. You can set it to work on various applications, which for gaming is a HUGE help seeing that not all games have the same hotkeys.
Pros: Not too big yet not too small either, so for those with larger than average hands, this mouse will suit you well.
The feel of it is also unique since my thumb and fingers and palm all fit comfortably and it's molded to my hand opposed to my hand having to get used to the mouse.
Buttons go both ways, the Pro is that they are relatively easy to reach and also aren't too big to where I'm pressing multiple buttons at once along with that they aren't grouped too close together, but are also not too small so I'm not having to search for them.
Cord length is great. For another mouse that I bought but later returned, the cord length was way too small seeing that I game on my bed and plug my USB into the left and my headset on the right.
Shipping was fast as well. I ordered Saturday and the delivery estimate was by December 3rd (Nothing happened Sunday other than order being confirmed). Yet I got it today. This was with standard shipping.
Affordable for such a higher end of the line type of mouse. I looked else where and this was the least expensive and also from Amazon, who I've never had trouble with in the past.
Lastly, it was extremely easy to set up. I've had other accessories like a headset that was complicated to understand, but this beauty was just plug it in, set the buttons I was as shortcuts, and Voilà!
Cons: Though fewer, still some. Again, the buttons go both ways. As I said that they are relatively easy to reach, 3 of them are oddly placed in my opinion. I would've preferred that the middle 3 have at least 2 on the other side of the mouse so I could use my ring and pinky fingers to press instead of having curl my fingers to press, but overall not that big of a hassle, livable but would be nicer if they were arranged differently.
The only other Con that this mouse has, is the simple fact that it isn't manufactured to be both Mac and Windows compatible like so many other Logitech brand accessories are. I would've preferred to not have to have gone and gotten a 3rd party application, but in the end it wasn't that big of a problem either.
I would DEFINITELY recommend this mouse to anyone who is a gamer but also would like to have mouse short cut keys instead of hitting control (whatever) or Apple (whatever). I'll come back and update anything new as I play with it some more. But do yourself a favor and buy it!
(Edit) Okay, well not a whole lot to add. I was extremely concerned after the first few days seeing the fact that my computer started to crash... As it turns out, it wasn't related to the mouse (at least not as far as crashing) but rather that my logic board was (and sadly still is) damaged and was causing the problem. I also recently connected it and installed the driver that comes packaged, and found that it was less than I expected. I briefly set it up as it was a temporary fix seeing that my computer is currently busted and I hopped on a friend's computer, which is possibly why it wasn't what I thought it would be. The box comes with a quick start guide that showed the DPI settings, which I guess I didn't fully fiddle around with, but I didn't see anything of that sort. Basically it was the 8 buttons and what I wanted to set it to, no DPI settings other than the 2 buttons that increase and decrease. Steer Mouse however was excellent in the fact that I could set the buttons to any key and/or virtually any command I wanted it to. Still 5 stars and definitely still recommended.
