Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Red)Customer Review: Smokin' Design! Summary: 5 Stars
The Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Red) is exceptionally durable, ergonomic, and aesthetically pleasing:
Features
--------
- Precise
Despite possessing only a 800 DPI sensor, the tracking feels very precise and responsive and the movement of the pointer is very fluid at the medium pointer speed. At higher pointer speeds, however, the mouse begins to lose its precision and the movement of the pointer becomes a little choppy. If you need a mouse with a higher level of precision, consider the MX 518, which has a 1600 DPI sensor.
- Optical
The optical tracking does not work on all surfaces. Optical tracking works very poorly on shiny, transparent, or translucent surfaces. If you want a mouse that will work on any surface, you will need a laser mouse (such as the exceptional Logitech G9 gaming mouse, which is capable of resolutions up 3200 DPI).
- Ergonomic
The MX 510 is shaped to allow your entire hand to comfortably "hug" it. The molded groove on its left allows provides a comfortable spot to place your thumb. All the buttons - front, back, context (behind the wheel), wheel, speed-scroll-up, speed-scroll-down, and of course, the left and right click - are conveniently and intuitively located.
- Attractive and Unique Design
The design of the MX 510 is attractive and unique. It's burgundy color has a metallic sheen to it.
---
There are mice that provide better tracking with laser technology and higher resolution (DPI), but price of the MX 510 can't be beat. For an ordinary home user, I would recommend the MX 510. For a gamer who demands more from their mouse, I'd recommend the G9.
Customer Review: Excellent mouse becoming an even better value by the day Summary: 5 Stars
I own 2 of these mice, one bought new shortly after the model came out, one bought used. They've gotten daily use and still work just as well as when I first bought them. They're high enough quality that I recommended them to friends back then, but they're an even better value now. Let me explain.
With the MX518 and G5 Laser mice (both by Logitech) being marketed right now for gamers, the MX510 has gone by the wayside somewhat. It lacks the ability to change DPI settings with just a buttonpress, has half the DPI of the MX518 (& much less than the G5), and the scroll wheel only goes up/down instead of having the tilt feature the G5 has. (Perhaps the 518 has this too, but I haven't checked).
But remember that the MX510's 800DPI is still well above average quality. Its shape/comfort is similar to the G5 and equal to the MX518. And it has 2 thumb buttons instead of just 1 like the G5. Also note that the MX510 DOES have buttons where these other two "gaming" mice have on-the-fly DPI changing buttons. It's just that on the MX510 they're used for fast scrolling up/down instead -- something many people may find more useful so they won't have to be flicking their middle finger many times to go through a document.
Yes, the G5 and MX518 are technically better. But because of their release, the MX510 is a far better quality-for-price value for all but the most demanding gamers & photoshop artists. My experience with the MX518 and G5 is limited to store display models hooked up to store display computers, and as long as their price stays high & my MX510's keep running this well, it'll probably stay that way.

Customer Review: Hands-down, the best mouse I've ever used Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this after my old optical mouse (a free-after-rebate no-name item I got less than a year ago) was on the fritz. I use this at home, where my computer set-up is less-than-perfect since I don't spend as much time using it as I do my office computer, so with the old mouse, I could feel the onset of carpal tunnel after any intensive mouse sessions (for example, selective color correction of photos in Photoshop). However, with the MX510, I've used it for hours on end with no fatigue at all.
The placement of the back/forward buttons is great. I had a Kensington 5-button mouse at work where extra buttons were located at the base of the mouse on both sides, and I was always clicking those by accident. I was not particularly fond of the "cruise control" effect, so I mapped those buttons to Page Up and Page Down. An earlier reviewer stated he had a lot of trouble getting to the Program Swithcer button because he had to "crinch your middle finger up to hit it" but I mouse with my index finger on the wheel, so I never have a problem getting to it. In fact, I hit it a lot when I actually mean to Page Down. Other reviewers have had complained about the stiffness of the wheel, but I find it easy to use.
I ordered mine on November 11, 2004, and the CD came with the latest Mouseware drivers (9.80 as of this writing). My only complaint with them is that I can't map the buttons to do different things in different applications. For example, back/forward are only useful while web browsing. Is there some reason I can't make them do something else when I'm not using a browser?
Customer Review: Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin! Summary: 5 Stars
Initially I balked at the thought of paying more than $15 for a mouse (this was back when you would have to pay $50 for this model.) and considered it for a long time. My biggest thing is that it has to be able to multitask and whether I'm in a video game or surfing the web, ALL buttons must function. Period. Having decided to upgrade to "gamer" equipment, that too caught my eye.
Upon arrival I thought that perhaps the shape might pose a problem, as I was used to the rounded-dome mice. It fit comfortably and snuggly in to my hands and all buttons were within easy reach. I have never had an issue with it being unresponsive or jumping around that wasn't solved by removing a stray cathair from underneath the optical sensor. It has gone strong through 3 moves and 2 years worth of gaming and the only thing that bugged me was the pads on the bottom wearing down and wearing off.
I adore this thing. It has become virtually indispensible when I am online with MMORPGs, allowing me to save moving my hands to different parts of the keyboard to strike hotkeys that were taken over by buttons on the mouse (and I didn't have to program them, to boot, it naturally picked up some of the more useful commands!)
I like this thing so much that when my last one met with an unfortunate orange-juice incident that warped the left click and stuck the back and forward buttons above the thumb, I immediately went out and tried to find another one. I'm glad I did, as I find this to be an incredibly reliable and useful mouse, and I have not once regretted the money I spent on it.
Customer Review: GREAT MOUSE! Summary: 5 Stars
I hate optical mice. I can honestly say that I prefer ball mouses to optical ones anytime of the day...that is until I played with one of these. Why did I buy it? Because if you're a frequent gamer, you need to know what works and if you check out any professional counterstrike (it's a first person shoot 'em up game) teams, their members, the majority of them, use THIS MOUSE. So I snagged one just to try it out...WOW. The feel of the optical lag is NONEXISTENT. The movements of the mouse is 99.99998% similiar to that of a ball mouse except for a few things...no cleaning and no rattling sound of the ball. I can't describe how much I recommend this mouse...sure it seems extraneous to buy a mouse that costs anything more than 5 bucks...but believe me, I bought it and I seriously have no buyer's remorse at all. It's THAT GOOD. The main emphasis once again is the feel of the mouse...not necessarily the contours since that depends on a person's preference, however, the actual movements of the mouse is beyond words superb. This is one of those things that you didn't know you needed or you werent sure about getting because of the price but once you got it, you realized how 1) you needed it 2) it was worth it. EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED FOR GAMERS
EDIT for 3/16/06: Time to upgrade folks...MX510 was great for its time but now it's time to look into the latest and greatest! G7/G5/MX518 - Take a look!
