Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony Xbox 360 RemoteCustomer Review: Great remote Summary: 5 Stars
This remote is just what I needed. It controls my machines and is intuitive. Plugs easily into the computer - works with my Mac, which is always of concern. It took a few tries to get it just right, but that was mostly because I wasn't sure what I needed it to do (my HDTV came without a remote at all, so I was starting from less than scratch). Very easy to plug back into the computer for tweaking and updates; I have mine set to "Play DVD", "Play Xbox 360", "Watch TV", and "Watch my TV". That last one has the tv turn on and open the OnDemand menu. Depending on the tv you have, you can assign aspect ratios to each action - "Play DVD" sets the TV to widescreen, while "Watch TV" returns it to standard 4:6. You can even choose actions for the Xbox360 to perform - I used it to play DVDs as well, so selecting "PLay DVD" on the remote had it go directly to the disc, while "Play Xbox360" opened the dashboard.
Give yourself time to flip through the instructions, play around with the computer page, and then test out what you've downloaded onto the remote. It's not just plug-and-play, since you have to tell it what you want, but it's almost that simple.
Note: 5-second delay is a long time! (You can program a stream of actions, with time delays. For example, one of my actions turns on the tv, delay, changes aspect ratio, delay, then turns to OnDemand. The delay allows the TV and cable box to process all of the signals coming at it, and you can choose between 2 and 5 second delays)
Customer Review: Best Harmony remote so far Summary: 5 Stars
This is my 4th Harmony remote, and my favorite so far (others have been 688, 680, and 520). In particular, this model has the best ergonomics of any I've tried. There are several different styles and textures of buttons, making it easy to find the right button in the dark without looking. It's also very light and comfortably weighted, and it has a very large number of programmable buttons, giving you more programmable buttons instead of dedicated buttons such as "Sound" "Pic" and "Media" on some other Harmony models, which I've found to be of limited use.
Although designed to work well with the XBox 360, it is a good choice even if you don't have an XBox. It's concession to the XBox 360 is 4 colored Y,X,A,B buttons, but they can be used for other functions as well. For the XBox 360 it works fine, although it only provides the same functions as the XBox 360 infrared remote. Some functions of the XBox 360 are not controllable through infrared and require the XBox 360 controller.
As with all Harmony remotes, setup requires a computer with a USB port and internet connectivity, and is a bit slow since it goes through a web site. However, set up is easy, and once it is configured it works flawlessly, automatically determining which input and power settings need to be changed for whatever activity you choose. A minor limitation is that it will only handle up to 12 components, while most other Harmony models go to 16.
Customer Review: Finally, a Remote I Am Completely Satisfied With Summary: 5 Stars
For those of you concerned that something with this many buttons will be difficult to set up, here's the process:
- open the box
- swap in the batteries push for buttons to reset the remote
- install the included software
- connect the remote to your computer
- create an account (your settings are stored online)
- tell the remote the model number of all your video and audio devices
- unplug the remote and start using it
For most users, it really will be that easy. I was amazed at how intuitive the remote's controls are to my technophobic friends and family members. If a device doesn't seem to be doing what you want it to do, the interactive help menu is excellent. If you get really confused, Logitech's (outsourced) tech support is free. If you get a new computer or have to replace the remote (I did, and the warranty response was excellent) - having all of your settings stored online is really handy.
Now, for those of you who are gadget geeks like me, here's the better news. If you so desire, you can customize - using the clear, intuitive menus in the software - the performance of every single button on the remote for every single device it controls. The remote also can "learn" new commands through it's IR port, but it rarely needs to since most devices are already stored in the software database.
Logitech absolutely got this right.
Customer Review: STOP LOOKING AND BUY THIS! Summary: 5 Stars
I don't take the time to write many reviews unless a product blows me away. This product blew me away. I have gone through 2 other universal remotes which were supposed to support the XBOX 360 for DVD playback but neither worked. I could never get one of them to recognize my XBOX 360 and the other required me to send the remote in to their service center for a firmware upgrade. It may have worked if I took the time to do that, but this is 2008.
This remote seems to be based on a standard Logitech Universal Remote and just adds the XBOX functionality. It even has the 4 XBOX colored buttons.
The beauty of this remote is programming it to work with my devices. I have never been through an easier process. You basically load the software on your PC, let it know what devices you have, then use the remote and see if it works. If it doesn't, there isnt any complex programming. The remote will troubleshoot for you. For example, my TV was tuning to the wrong input when I chose to "Play Xbox". The remote asks if it worked. I clicked no and it let me through a troubleshooting process ON THE REMOTE and fixed itself. VERY COOL! A+++
My only complaint is I can't figure out how to change radio stations on my receiver. It very well may work and I just haven't discovered it yet. I only spent about 30 minutes with it so I'm likely overlooking something.
Customer Review: A must have to reduce remote clutter. Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and I recently purchased a new tv, surround sound system and an XBOX 360. Needless to say we were happy with our setup but not happy at all with having to use 5 different remotes to change input settings on the tv, etc, etc. I saw this remote in Best Buy and did some online research. Although it was pricey I went ahead and got it from Best Buy for 129.99 (gift cards are a wonderful excuse to buy a new toy). I have never paid this much money for a remote and my wife was not too keen on the idea, but I will say that after just one night of use I find it well worth the money. Setting up my remote intially was a bit difficult since my Norton antivirus and firewall were not letting the computer talk to the remote via usb. Deactivating both of those solved that problem. Once the two devices were talking the setup process is easy. The program walks you through step by step what to do. After you are done telling it what you have, model numbers, inputs, etc the remote is programmed and you are off and running. The remote does what it says it will do. I now have one remot to control all of my gear and I love it. The rest of my remotes were immediatey placed in a drawer. The remote is also user configurabel so you can tell it how long you want the backlighting to stay on, etc. If you have a 360 and other gear this is a great remote that will replace all of your other ones.
