Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3

Customer Review: Product works as Advertised and makes life easy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read a lot of reviews about this product before purchasing it. I was a little leary about how well it would work when so many people complained about the ease of set up and and it's functionality.

I received the product and immediately took it out of the box and and followed it's directions that were very clear. Within 5 min (most of that time was running the power cord down the back of the entertainment system to the plug in) the product was connected to the PS3 and working as advertised, although it was doing some weird things. When I would try to move to each selection on the X menu, it wouldn't move one spot at a time and would scroll, which meant it was hard to select just one item. If I wanted the movie icon, it would just wizz by it and made it to where I had to do some majic to make it stop on exactly what I wanted.

At this point I didn't know if it was the products fault or my remotes fault, so I decided to order a new remote since I did have some problems with it before. The remote I had was a Logitech 890 that I had bought about 3 years ago. I already had the extension system that came with the 890 so i wanted a remote that would work with that same system. I went with the Logitech 1100. That was a mistake. I'm not much for one with Most of the buttons being touch screen buttons, especially the ones I use most often like FFD and REW or PLAY. I sent that back and then went with the Logitech 900. So far this remote has been a dream!

Now that I have the 900 the PS3 extender works perfectly! It scrolls one at a time and works perfectly. Makes it so much easier to watch Netflix and it turns the PS3 on and off with no problems. Haven't found anything it can't do.

Customer Review: Killer product
Summary: 5 Stars

It is so nice not to have to pick up the ps3 controller to watch/control a movie or listen to music. I purchased a Harmony 880 a while back and have been really enjoying that since I got it, with the exception of some sketchiness with my series 3 Tivo, but that's another story entirely. The instructions for the setup couldn't have been simpler in terms of the Harmony software. Just delete your current PS3 device and add it back in. Took me only a few minutes and then everything worked on the PS3.

The thing I was most pleased about is the intuitive button programming. The buttons, like "Info", do exactly what you expect when you expect them to. The config is well thought out and works great. If you are not sure what to hit in terms of the named buttons on the 880, I can just fall back to the context buttons labeled "Circle", "Square", etc.

Blu-ray playback is no longer a pain! I actually have access to the special "color" buttons that you would normally have to hit "Triangle" to get the on-screen menu for. Though I've customized the layouts and such for some of my other devices, I can't say that I've really run into a case yet where I've needed to do it with this.

Another great thing about this is that the IR receiver can be put pretty much anywhere (where you have a wall outlet) since it communicates with the PS3 via bluetooth. This gives you significant leeway in terms of placement in your home theater stack. Not a huge plus, but convenient nonetheless.

This is the basically the best of all worlds: simple, easy to set up and it "just works". If you've got a PS3 you are using frequently for more than just gaming and a Harmony remote, you need one of these.

Customer Review: Why did I wait so long to get this?

Now that I bought it I love it! I had the Nyko Blue Wave before it and it was a good product, but did not have all the functions of the real remote. Now I have direct access to audio channels, captioning, and the PS button to name a handy few. So nice to use my Harmony remote to turn on and off the PS3 with out having to get up or use the game controller. Logitech must build in a special macro to turn it off, since there is not a dedicated on/off or toggle (PShold+X). When I exit the Blu-ray mode, or use the off button, it turns the PS3 off.

I scoffed at it for 60 dollars thinking it was too much and when it hit 40 I finally got it, after my friend gave me some perspective. He said you invest all this in your home theater and have to get up to turn on the PS3! Not that I am lazy, but he was messing with me and he was right. So, if you invest in fancy remotes, cables, and other gadgets, and have a PS3 that you use to watch movies and media, this should be a part of your setup.

Pros
Does everything the PS3 Blu-ray remote does.
perfect for using your Harmony to control your PS3.
extender port on it.
Similar style as PS3 (Glossy finish is more like Original PS3 than Slim)

Cons
didn't buy it sooner.
Sometimes if I turn the PS3 off or on manually, it gets out of sync. (no distinct off/on signals)
no jog shuttle control like the right analog stick on the game pad.
Might have to cover green light if you don't like it (I thought I would, but I don't notice it)

That's all I can come up with for now.

Customer Review: Does exactly what it proposes!

I recently picked up a PS3 after a couple of years in the xbox camp. I still love my xbox but being a 30-something casual gamer and not a die-hard fanboy I decided to throw the PS3 into my home theater setup when my existing Sony Blu-Ray player's molasses-like speed finally drove me mad. The PS3 is to become my primary DVD/Blu-ray playback device, in addition to Netflix and Hulu-plus duties, so a traditional remote is much preferred over the console controllers.

As you may have found, the PS3 does not natively support IR remotes and I happen to already have a Harmony 880 controlling my setup. I did a lot of research and saw several devices for less than 1/3 the price of this Logitech product that would allow me to perform some, but not all, of the available commands using my existing IR remote. The biggest drawback is that those other devices won't turn the PS3 on or off.

Setup was easy, but it did require a little configuring on the PS3 settings to pair the device, as well as software reconfiguration of the Harmony remote using Logitech's software. All that went off without a hitch and within 15 minutes I had everything hooked up, configured and working as expected.

Its been a month and I'm happy with the product. More importantly, the spouse approves.

My only gripe is the price. While it does more than every other option out there, its tough to stomach that price for a mere media changer (IR to Bluetooth).

Customer Review: Does what it says, albeit pricey.

I had heard several issues with this product but I experienced none so far with installation only. All of my equipment is hidden in a closet away from the family room and used with a Harmony 890. My extender is in that closet, and no components are in line of sight of the remote. I positioned this adapter about 1 foot away from the extender.

I plugged it in (I have a powered usb hub in my closet operating cooling fans, so I may opt to grab a usb power cord in the future just to free up outlet space), turned on the PS3 and connected the device as instructed (no problems).

As also instructed, I deleted the PS3 device and PS3 activity from the Logitech Desktop Software, then added the PS3 (designated it to be controlled by "IR Blaster") and PS3 activity back in. (Hint - the only device to add is the PS3, there is no PS3 adapter device to look to control.) Then I updated the extender and remote and plugged it back in.

Done. Worked immediately. I haven't gotten in to functionality yet, but the remote through the crossbar was responsive and accurate.

Pricey, yes. But it's the only thing that gets rid of using a silly game controller to watch movies. For anyone who has even invested a modest amount of money into their home enterainment system and enjoys a simple, clean, functional setup, you will be happy shelling out the $60.
