Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3

Customer Review: Slightly pricey perfection - but gets the job done
Summary: 5 Stars

My main holiday gift this year was a Logitech Harmony One remote, and I know it would have driven me crazy not to have this PS3 adapter to complete it.

People may be wondering: Why do I need this? Well, because the PS3 designers, in their flawed wisdom, did not equip the PS3 with an infrared receiver. It works entirely over a linked bluetooth connection. So this PS3 adapter takes infrared signals and converts them to bluetooth.

It is worth noting that if you are using HDMI connections, there's a good possibility with current televisions that they can control attached HDMI-capable devices. So, for example, our Sony Bravia TV remote can actually control basic navigation and many other functions on the PS3 -- but only if the PS3 is already turned on. That's the one main hiccup I encountered.

Hooking this up is simple: Plug it in. Turn on your PS3. Go to the Settings menu and locate the function to add a "BD Accessory." Tell the PS3 to look for a new device. Press the little Connect button on the bottom of the adapter. Done.

Config note: The PS3 apparently can support only one bluetooth remote device. If you already bought another one, like the Sony bluetooth PS3 'blu-ray player'-style remote (the one that retails for around twenty bucks here on Amazon), that remote will be disabled. As I said, the PS3 only allows for one.

But hey -- you got the Harmony One (or other Harmony remote) to replace your others. What's one more tossed in the drawer?

The basic PS3 Harmony set-up from their online database was pretty good, but I still went in and customized some of the buttons, and then added some extras to the Harmony One's touchscreen display. So far, even though I've only owned my Harmony One for a day, it seems to work great. I loved being able to just touch "Watch movie on PS3" -- and have it power up the TV (which itself automatically turns on the AV Receiver), and then hear the beep from the PS3 as it powered up as well. So far so good, in terms of all the functions working.

My only complaint is this adapter really ought to cost half as much. Perhaps in time the price will come down. On the other hand, I looked at the other converters and others were even more pricey, or else where they were cheaper, people commented that the converters didn't work very well.

Would I get this again? Yep. Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes.

Customer Review: Flawless
Summary: 5 Stars

There's no much to say about the PS3 adapter because it's so easy to set up and it simply does what's expected of it. Once the setup is complete, it simply... disappears and there's no need to worry about it or even be aware of its presence.

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

It comes in a small box, everything tightly and securely held inside.

The 2 components are the remote adapter itself and the AC power adapter. The manual is a poster-style, step-by-step with pictures and text in 4 languages (English/French/Spanish/Portuguese).

SETUP

Once the adapter is plugged, the PS3 side of the setup is as easy as going to Settings/Accessory Settings/Register BD Remote Control. The PS3 only accepts one remote control at a time and, since I already had the Sony remote control registered, it unregistered it and, once I pressed the 'connect' button on the bottom of the Logitech adapter, the PS3 recognized it.

On the Harmony side - I have a Harmony 900 - I had to add the PS3 there. I picked 'Game console with DVD', selected Sony as the manufacturer and typed in 'Playstation 3' for the device name. It was instantly recognized.

The 'Activity', as expected, makes intelligent use of Harmony's physical buttons and it adds the triangle/circle/square/x as soft buttons. I added the PS and 'Select' as the fifth and sixth soft buttons on the first page and I created a second page for the 'Eject' and 'Audio'. I didn't want 'Eject' to be on the first page in order to avoid accidents.

On the Harmony side, I allowed the PS3 adapter to be controlled through the RF blasters to eliminate the need of 'pointing' the Harmony. And... that was it -
10-15 minutes for the initial setup and maybe another 15-30 minutes to decide which soft buttons to add and where to place them.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The PS3 adapter is a bit pricey but I think it's worth it because it eliminates the need for the last non-Harmony remote on my coffee table. Up until now, it performed flawlessly and it didn't affect the PS3 or the way it takes commands from its game controllers. For me, it's a keeper and I am so confident that it's going to do 'the job' well, I just sold my Sony PS3 remote through the Amazon marketplace which is bringing down the overall cost a little bit.

Customer Review: A must have for Harmony remote users who have a PS3!
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently purchased this Harmony adapter for my Play Station 3 on Saturday, February 12, 2011, and I must say that I have enjoyed having it. I currently have a Harmony One Remote, and I wanted to be able to control my PS3 using my Harmony remote instead of having to use the controller, and this device has paid off for me - big time. Here are the Pros and Cons that I have found with this Harmony adapter:

PROS:
1). EASE OF SET UP - It is unbelievably quick and easy to set up this adapter. It took me about 10 minutes or less to set this device up and have it working, as the instructions for set up are made simple, easy, and very user friendly. I had to first pair the adapter with my PS3 by pushing the button on the back of the adapter, and then I entered in the model number code for the PS3 to my Harmony remote through my Harmony account, and my remote then started working for the PS3 after I programmed my remote.
2). CONTROL OF PLAYSTATION FUNCTIONS - The adapter allows me to control ALL 51 functions on my PS3 like watch movies from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, watch DVD and Blu Ray discs, update my PS3's settings, download programs from the PlayStation store, etc . I am just glad that I now don't have to use my PS3 controller to control any of the PS3's functions on the machine anymore - except for when I am playing video games.
3). ADAPTER'S RANGE - This adapter also has great range and a great line of sight: For example, my PS3 and adapter are located on the shelf below my TV. Even if I point my remote at the TV when I power on my PS3, the PS3 still powers on regardless, and I don't have to aim the remote directly at the adapter because the range for its line of sight extends quite far.

CONS:
1). The only con that I really found in buying this adapter is the high $40 plus dollar cost for it, but it was worth the money for me to be able to control my PS3 using my Harmony remote, and I can just use one remote to control all of the multiple devices in my home.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
I highly recommend this adapter for ALL users of any type of Harmony remote control. For anyone out there who is tired of using your wireless PS3 controller to control the functions on your PS3, then buy the Harmony adapter and a Harmony remote to go with it. You won't be disappointed; I am definitely not.

Customer Review: Easy to install and works fine
Summary: 5 Stars

I recommend the Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 with five stars. It was easy to install; it "just works"; it's small, stylish, and unobtrusive.

The adapter converts the infrared signals from a Logitech Harmony remote control into Bluetooth (radio) signals compatible with a PS3, allowing the remote to control your PS3 in addition to your TV, cable box, etc.

It's about the size of a deck of playing cards, with handsome cabinetry for such a small device. It has a green LED indicator on top (which thankfully is facing the ceiling, not me!). It has a thin 6' power cord ending in a small power brick.

Installation was easy. I plugged it in, turned on my PS3, and from the PS3 navigated to Settings > Accessory Settings > Register BD remote, then held down the buttons when told to do so. It took me less than five minutes.

Bottom line - does its job with no fuss, easy to install, looks good.

Now, as a bonus, I'll review the Logitech Harmony 650 remote for which I bought the adapter.

The remote is great ... when it works right. I love the concept! It controls my Sony TV, Fios box, and PS3 (which I use as my Blu-Ray/DVD/CD player). It uses the concept of "activities", like "watch a movie", that turn on and configure the devices appropriate to that activity. You set it up by plugging it into your PC with a USB cable, then navigating to the Logitech Web site to easily program the remote for the specific devices you own.

But, on fairly frequent occasions, something goes wrong and the Logitech won't turn on/off all the devices. Usually that's easily resolved from the remote itself using the Help menu. Infrequently it won't work at all and I must use each device's remote to turn it on/off - so instead of reducing the clutter of three remotes, I've effectively just added a fourth!

As a quibble: The number keypad has small-ish buttons and is at the very bottom of the remote. More often than not I have to hold the remote in both hands to type in my TV stations. That's inconvenient as I direct-dial most of the time (and it really slows down my channel surfing!).

All told, I'd have to give the Harmony 650 no more than three stars.

Customer Review: Finally! One remote to rule them all.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a Logitech Harmony 1000 remote, and I run a Pioneer Elite receiver, a Toshiba HDDVD (ok - not smart), an XBox360, a wireless headset controller, a Pioneer Elite upscaling DVD player, two computers with Zalman IR controls, and a Playstation 3. I could control everything with my Harmony 1000 except the Playstation 3. I tried the Nyko Blu-Wave product, and while I've been extremely happy with most Nyko products, I had tons of problems with it. From not being able to power up/power down, commands executing twice, etc., there were just too many issues to make it worthwhile. Considering that Sony's bluetooth remote was so nice, it made sense to go to 2 remotes.

Well now I'm finally down to one without a sacrifice. This unit has it's own AC power, so it works whether the PS3 is off or on, which is a huge advantage.

The other huge advantage over every other solution is that it contains every single command that the bluetooth remote has (I believe it is 51 in all).

Pros:
-Self-powered via AC adapter
-Works regardless of PS3 being on or off
-Contains all 51 commands, including the PS button
-Doesn't take up a valuable USB port on the PS3
-Commands work in PS2 emulator of original 60gb PS3
-Range via Harmony 1000 is excellent
-No problems with double-commands like Nyko product
-Design matches Playstation 3
-Logitech had all the commands and screens for all of the supported remotes on their website on launch day (nicely done Logitech!!)

Cons:
-Price is a little high (it's 3 times the cost of the Sony bluetooth remote)
-For that money, I would like to have had the option of a rechargeable battery so that an AC adapter wouldn't be needed.
-Unit is small, but it seems like it could be smaller.
-It is still infrared from remote to receiver, so you have to aim it versus bluetooth which is omnidirectional.

Summary: If you want to get down to one remote, this is THE way to do it. If you want to save money, go with the omnidirectional Sony bluetooth remote (don't go third part on that).
