Customer Review: Logitech Harmony 890
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a terrific little remote for someone who enjoys tinkering and setting it up yourself. As with anything of this nature, the functionality you receive is directly in line with the time you spend setting it up. The set up software is fairly intuitive and guides you through. Just put in your device model #'s and tell it how they communicate with one another and it sets it up in easy to use fashion with on-board help menus if something isnt working. It may take a few tweaks on the setup to get it just the way you want. I havent found anything that it WONT recognize and have gotten it to even operate several devices that are quite old and we lost the remotes to years ago. It will even learn IR codes if needed. If you have direct line of sight to your devices, you can save by getting the 880 which has the same functionality but is just an IR remote - no RF signals. I am anxious to try out the new Z-Wave lighting controls which the 890 will supposedly communicate with. The only slight complaint I have is that the screen is hard to read with the smaller icons. (You can, however, set it up to show only 4 icons at a time on the screen which helps quite a bit.)

Customer Review: Does all it's advertised to do, very well.

We got this remote to replace the collection of remote's we have accumulated in the hope that this 'one' remote could do it all. It can and does!
The primary objective was to combine the remote controls previously required to watch television; TV, Satellite DVR, and AV/Stereo. This remote provides a very nice integrated solution for not just television viewing, but also control of the DVD and CD Players.
One of the the really great features of this remote system is that it can use Radio Frequencies to control the system from other parts of the house. While this isn't very useful for television viewing, it is great for listening to music and being able to select the source; tuner, CD, etc. and change the radio station, adjust volume or mute, from anywhere in the house.
The only downside, if you can call it that, was getting everything controlled correctly. The setup for the remote is done using your PC and on-line resource from Logitech. The programming is pretty straight forward, but can be iterative until you have everything the way you like it. Initial programing took about 35 minutes, but getting everything just right was about 90 minutes.

Customer Review: Best electronics purchase I've made in awhile
Summary: 5 Stars

It really sells for $400 in the stores so right off the bat it was a great deal. Of course if it didn't work it wouldn't matter, but it works flawlessly. I work in the television industry so the setup was extremely easy for me. I trust that anyone who considers themselves a videophile wouldn't have a problem, but this remote isn't for your Aunt Marge. It is an advanced remote, meaning it is more sophisticated than your standard Universal remote. That doesn't mean it's hard to setup and program though. On the contrary it was so simple I couldn't believe it. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of computers can program this through the remote's software interface. I read some other reviewers had some trouble with the programming not working through the software, but with my Mac I didn't have any issues. The RF signal makes this worth the money alone. I have 7 components in a cabinet that all had separate remotes and required that I point the remote directly at each device. Now, not only do I not have to point the remote anywhere in particular, but I can keep the cabinets closed, hiding all the unsightly hardware. Best buy I've made for the money.

Customer Review: Good choice

This remote has everything included for the remote to work on everything. Now I mean everything! If you have something that needs a signal to work, this thing covers it. It does my room lighting on top of the TiVo, Cable Box, TV, VCR and DVD and anything else I want to control. I'd bet I could use this to open the garage door! The only negative thing is that to use the RF signal which my BOSE system has you need an adapter. I haven't installed it yet, but the pain from swapping between the DVR cable box remote and the TiVo is gone! Just think of this remote as every other remote all tied into one. Select the item you want to control (you can call it what you want and designate it on your computer during set up to show on the remote's menu screen, ie..bedroom TV vs Livingroom TV) and this remote becomes the answer to 6 remotes on the coffee table. I have 2 remotes now, the BOSE and this one. Set up does take a little time, but you can get a head start and do it online and when you get your remote just transfer the settings. It's good because you can set it all up and if you upgrade a remote the settings are easily transferred to another remote.

Customer Review: Sheds the ignorant...
Summary: 5 Stars

The Logitech Harmony 890 is one of the best univeral remote controls to come out, ever. It has the ability to consolidate all your home theatre remotes into one console. It may be a little overwhelming for those new to audio/video control. Even guys like me, with some experience with home theatre, can hit some snags along the way.

Not every one of my seven components worked right the first time I programmed it. It turned out to be my incorrect inputs on setup that made the errors. If you're patient, give it a little thought, and try the many programming options it offers, you should eventually get it to control your entire audio/video system satisfactorily. I had an issue with my PlayStation 3 (it only accepts Bluetooth, not infra-red signals), but I worked my way around it with a Nyko Remote dongle.

I haven't used the R/F transmitter yet, but the Z-Wave light controls were a breeze to control. Now, when I tell the remote I want to watch a DVD, not only does it set my audio/video components correctly, but my lights dim to just the right level for viewing, all with one push of the button. Fantastic!!
