Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony 890 Advanced Universal Remote ControlCustomer Review: More bang for your buck Summary: 5 Stars
It is a great remote overall! I've used many universal remotes in the past, from different manufacturers, cheap and expensive. Logitech IMHO provides the best value for your money, especially with an Amazon price I've paid for it (below $200). It's also "wife-friendly" - a big factor! :)
I have upgraded through 3 or 4 Logitech remotes already - from 520 to 890, and it's nice to know that you don't have to spend time re-programming all your devices all over again - just click a few buttons in Logitech's software and you're good to go. The RF part works flawlessly controlling all my media devices behind closed cabinet doors - and it seems to send IR and RF simultaneously, so switching between different activities works faster than before.
It controls all kinds of devices in my home, from Roomba vacuum, to lighting, to DVD changer, to Vista PC with Media Center on it. RF gives you the flexibility to position your devices where you like them, not where IR can reach them.
On the down side:
-Software allows to program only one remote, so if you have multiple remotes you'll need separate account for each.
-I like the darker color of 880 better (there's a PRO version of 890 in that color, but it's more expensive and hard to find)
Overall, great value!
Customer Review: Very pleased with this remote Summary: 5 Stars
At my home I have most of my home entertainment components in a cabnet, behind a solid door. I also have a projector mounted to my ceiling. For the past year I have either had to operate my components by hand (DVD, DVR, Amplifier, Component Switch) or leave the door open so my IR controller would work. After much research I chose the Harmony 890 as my new universal remote. This is the ideal remote for my purposes since it utilizes both IR (infra-red) and RF (radio frequency). I still need the IR for my projector mounted on the ceiling. My biggest reservations were from reading the reviews that said set-up was a nightmare. When I got the remote I took the advice of a friend and discarded the set-up CD and went straight to Logitech's website and downloaded the most current software. This was very easy to install. I was planning on the set-up to take all evening and maybe the next as well. However, after a little less than 1 hour I was done. I figured that was too easy, but when I tested it...everything worked perfectly. I am so excited, this is the best universal remote investment I have ever made. Just an FYI, the components I am controlling with the Harmony 890 are: Marantz DVD, Marantz SR-18 receiver/amplifier, Panasonic HDTV Projector, Dish Network DVR and Psyclone 4 component switch.
Customer Review: Very nice remote Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very nice remote. My equipment was initally in one room and I configured the remote for IR use only. The software is really pretty decent and is definitely easy to use. I was able to load the drivers for all my equipment (even though a few pieces are 4 years old) and had the basic functions up and running in short order. The initial load even took care of doing the macros like "Watching TV" where you have to turn on the TV, change it's input to Vid 4, and turn on the cable box. It took several times back through the software to tweak the setups to my personal preferences. The software is really good about allowing you to add functions to the LCD area and you can even upload simple station logos to allow quick access to channels you watch a lot. After a week running only on IR, I moved most of the equipment to a rack in the next room. It took only one reload of the software to change several of the pieces to RF operation. Since it remembered how I wanted to work the equipment it only took a click on a drop down box to change each from IR to RF operation. About the only bad things I can say is some of the buttons are on the small side. After you use it for a while you really don't even notice that. A great remote at a great Amazon price.
Customer Review: Great Remote! Summary: 5 Stars
What an excellent remote. This remote makes life so much easier on many levels. Love the ability to set up the remote via USB. On initial setup, the harmony software walks you through the setup procedure in what I found to be a most straightforward and logical manner. I've found the concept of Activities and Devices very easy to understand. Afterwards, if something isn't quite to your liking in terms of key control, you can modify the buttons and what they control to your liking. Another nice feature is the ability to set which devices you want to control using IR and which you want to control using RF, allowing a nice amount of flexibility. Using the RF extender, I was able to install our satellite receiver in our basement(nice way to hide the wires!). I'm able to control the receiver via the RF extender from any area of the house with no problems, all the way up to the second floor. The backlight feature is nice...when you pick the remote up, the remote senses movement and turns the backlight on automatically....a most useful feature! In terms of ergonomics, I found the placement and size of the buttons just right...I didn't find them to small.
After using the remote for almost a month now, I'm most impressed and glad I went with the 890.
Customer Review: Exactly what I needed, and works as advertised Summary: 5 Stars
What kept me away from flat panel TV's for so long was that, no matter how low-profile the TV gets, you still have to have a bunch of ugly components out in the room if you want to use your remotes. This product eliminates all of that worry.
We have our Samsung flat panel hung on a wall outside of a closet with all of the wires going through the wall straight behind it, and this radio frequency remote allows us to keep the HD tuner, DVR, and DVD player hidden out of sight (and traffic) in the closet while still operating all of them via this remote.
TV looks like a picture frame; no wires at all. Gorgeous!
I also love that I don't have to point the remote at the objects. Used to be that if you're lying down to watch TV, you'd have to look at the remote, find the right button, point, click, look again, find the next button, etc. Now I can push the buttons with it pointed at the ceiling or behind me and it's just as effective. Well worth the price of admission, I assure you.
Setup was a breeze (they must have updated the software since some of these 2005-2006 reviews) and the expansion possibilities are huge.
Overall I'm very satisfied with this remote.
