Customer Review: Off and running in less than 30 minutes

When I got home from work and saw my Amazon package on the table, I thought it was going to be a long night of programming this remote. I got started at around 9:00 PM and by 10 I was showing it off to my wife and telling her how easy it was to watch TV or play a DVD.
I have heard, many horror stories about the software, but I found it extremely easy...not sure if they updated the software and made it more user friendly, but the stories of the set up being difficult weren't true for me.
I have a Surround receiver, Satellite box, TV, HD DVD player, Xbox 360. If I want to watch a DVD...I just tap the "watch a movie" icon and it turns on all the necessary components. All of this is set up in about a half hour through the software provided. It really couldn't be more simple.

I bought an 880 for my older HDTV system ( a few years ago) and the 1000 for my new home theater. No matter how expensive the so called universal remote (like the one that came with my Denon AVR 4306) they always seem to leave out one or more critical functions (like "record" for the PVR).
The 1000 remote is so simple that even my wife can operate it. Logitech customer support is great at tweaking the device to get it to do exactly what you want it to. None of this "try 20 different manufacturers code" crap. They have a database of over 175,000 devices. Just tilt the device and it lights up - great for darkened rooms. It'll even turn on your lights and fireplace if you have remote control for them.
They even featured one recently on either NCIS or CSI.

Fun and easy: hardware connection setup, web configuration, personal preference programming and custom button configuration, and firmware updates via usb. Nice touch screen and buttons. I'm using this with the Logitech RF extender without a problem. Very slight delay with the RF instead of the IR. Good battery life so far. Been using for a few weeks now.
Not so fun: explaining to my wife how to use her thumbs to press and push/pry open the battery cover to pull out the battery after the software locks up. Had to do this hard reset procedure a few times during the first 3-5 days of owning. Not sure how often or what actually caused these lockups. Pulling battery is not a big deal, similar to pulling out a cell phone battery.

Ive used logitech products for a long time... I have never been disappointed and this is no exception...
Do you really need this remote? No you dont! but if you are reading this you are probably like me (kind of a showoff).... and if you already spent 3000+ on your home theater get this!
The remote itself performs very well, but the screen is very suceptible to getting all smudgy.... I also had to buy an invisible shield for it (www.invisibleshield.com)
Id also like to point out that if you want a smaller (more confortable to the grip) and just as effective remote get a harmony one! (I got one for my living room) its cheaper and features also a touch screen!

Never before have I had a remote that actually could set up my system with the touch of one button. I have a complicated set of equipment including a media server, HDTV, Yamaha audio system (with different inputs), digital cable box, DVD, and game server. Yes, setting up this remote takes time... but once it is done, it is amazing... and the Logitech Harmony 1000 has a color screen that mimics all necessary buttons and puts important functions first. Absolutely top notch to touch one button and it switches on necessary equipment and switches to the correct inputs and I am ready instantly instead of having to use three different remotes to do one thing. I could not be happier with this product.
