Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony 1000 Advanced Universal Remote (Silver)

Customer Review: New Theater User
Summary: 5 Stars

I just installed my first home theater and this was the remote Best Buy recommended for me. I love the touch screen. It has a shape clear image. Not a plastic piece of junk. The unit is metal, very solid, slim and sleek.

Programming was very, very simple. I had to write the exact manufacturer and model of each device. Then I sat at the Windows Vista computer (Mac is supported as well) and it asked me for the inventory of devices that I entered. I had some really new stuff that was just weeks old and it was in their database. I also had really old and obscure stuff like a PAL format DVD player from Polaroid but they were all in their database.

What's really nice about programming the remote is you don't program functions. For example you don't say turn on power, switch to input 2, etc. The system automatically programs activities. Let me give you an example. An activity would be "Play a DVD". It asked me these questions which were based on the devices I told it I had:

1. What input does your Sony TV need to be on to watch a DVD? (It gave me all the available options with the DVD as the default).

2. Do you control the sound for a DVD through your Sony TV or through your Devon Tuner? (I setup a tuner for surround sound).

That's all ! How simple is that!?!?! Other activities I set up included watch a VHS tape, watch TV, listen the radio, play a CD. Just very simple stuff. The entire time from opening the box to using my Universal remote was about 30 minutes. I was impressed.

Customer Review: The King Of Remotes! I laugh at You haters
Summary: 5 Stars

There are many negative reviews out for this product. It starts with people not liking the software. Well, it is so simple a 5 year old can use it. These remotes are so much better than others because of the joining of computer and remote. Updates and configurations are easily done through the software. Trust me, you will shake your head and ask yourself why people bash it.

The pictures of the remote do not do it justice. It is no bigger than my wallet and not any thinker either. The pictures make this thing look huge but it is actually light weight and very ergonomic.

The color touch screen is beautiful and very easy to see. The hard buttons on the side are all that you need to operate essential operations. People complain about the touch screen saying that there is nothing like the 'feel' of buttons and that you have to 'look' at it in order to know what you are pressing. Well, of course you do but most of the buttons you will be using are on the side. So far the range has been perfect - TV, Recvr, Tivo, DVR, ect all operate fine with in 10 feet (I don't know why you would be farther away than that).

The cradle is sleek and the remote looks so cool on the cradle next to the 42" plasma TV. It also will sideshow Jpgs on it -

All you haters out there I laugh at you and smile on my couch....

I lucked out and got this remote on E bay for $269 NEW with free shipping. What a great deal! I love this remote and it will be tough to beat in the future generation remotes that will come out.

Customer Review: Awesome Product, with even better Customer Service
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me start out by saying one thing in case you don't want to read everything; The Logitech Harmony 1000 is the best remote I've ever laid my hands upon.

Now to the specifics and to address those who are complaining. This remote is NOT for everyone. For those who are channel flippers, or like to feel hard buttons, choose the 890 Pro. Otherwise this works perfectly.

I currently have a Projector, Receiver, DVD Player, Direct TV Tuner, Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, and another DvD player for Divx Files. As of yet, I haven't had a single problem hooking up or running anything. One button switches my receiver to the correct input, turns on my Projector, turns on whatever source I'm using and you can even have it set the volume to a certain level.

Installation and Setup took me around an hour, but only because my components are out of the way and I had to install the RF receiver in a good spot and figure out how to make it look nice. Good advice for anyone purchasing the RF receiver with this is that the signal does bounce off walls, so that might let you play around with it a little more.

Also, Logitech is one of the best companies if you need to call in and ask questions. I called in to ask about setting up some custom macro keys, and have also used them in the past for their Keyboards and Mice and they were; and always have been awesome and extremely helpful.

The only complaint I might give is that the RF receiver doesn't come included, but I'm sure many people don't need it and it does save them money.

Customer Review: This is the Best Remote hands down
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this remote to replace the Sony RM-AV1000. The Sony Remote has an lcd screen but no color, and no images, also has no sub menus. The Harmony 1000 has everything. You program it by connecting it to your computer, All you do to program it is select from a menu of choices what brand and model # your Tv is, And all other components, Receiver, DVD, Cd, VCR. Cable box, Dish Box. Also tell it from a drop down menu of choices how each device is connected. DVI, HDMI, RCA, Coaxial, Optical. It automatically adds the features that your old hand held remote had, Including sub-menus. The best part for me, since I've gotten older and my eyes are not as good as they use to be, It's all pictures. I don't need reading glasses as I did with the Sony remote. The Harmony 1000 is all touch screen. You do have hard buttons, for volume, mute. channel up or down. I rarely use these. I have my favorite channels programed in. If you like Fox News, theres a picture for it. you like A&E theres a picture for it. Just about any channel out there, theres a picture for it. you only need to tell it what channel it is on. Once your done programming. It will tell you to unplug it from the computer and go try it out. You may need some fine tuning, things I forgot to tell it or add in. There are no AA or AAA batteries to replace. The remote has its own charging base. and the remote tells you when its time to charge it. One last note. I turned the remote sound off. (mute remote) I didn't need it to make a sound everytime I touched a button on the screen.

Customer Review: Glad I bought this, should have set it up months ago...
Summary: 5 Stars

The Harmony took about an hour to set up & I had to call support because of an untrue message that it wouldn't control my Mitsubishi TV, but it was worth it. A support person in North America walked me through what I had not set up, changed some of the settings at his end, a very successful tech support call.

My Mitsubishi HD TV has "NetCommand" that is supposed to let me control other components with IR repeaters, and it worked fairly well, until this year when it stopped controlling my audio receiver most of the time.

The setup told me to delete all the netCommand settings. It should have told me to write down all the settings first, good thing I did because then it asked me which input for the cable/dvr, which for DVD, etc, and I had a handy piece of paper instead of crawling around in back of the goodies.

The Mitsu was also a pain to use, especially for anyone who is not a techie: I had to change devices on the TV, turn on the other device, change its input sometimes too.

Now anyone in the house can touch one button to change sources, turn the whole thing on & off, go to presets--I just hope we don't lose it or we're really screwed.

I even added the remote hack for my cable box/dvr that jumps in 30 second chunks; REALLY NICE>

The ergonomics are not too bad: my biggest gripe in the first day is that the volume & mute buttons should be larger. I think the aesthetics designers beat out the engineers in this area.
