Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Freedom 2.4 GHz Cordless JoystickCustomer Review: Pretty Good Summary: 4 Stars
This is a pretty good joystick, with good feel, good response, and plenty of options. I bought the Freedom about six months ago to play OSX SkyFighters (a WWII Flight Sim for the Mac) and for that purpose at least, it has been great, I literally have no complaints. That said, when I tried to use the Freedom to play the Mac version of F/A 18: Operation Iraqi Freedom the joystick came up short: F/A-18 really needs an 8 position hat switch just to get started -- the Logitech Freedom has 4 -- and the joystick didn't respond quickly enough (and its buttons sometimes not at all) and at times it gets jerky. For the WWII sims though, its great -- it works fine, is smooth, the cordless feature is really nice, and I've never had a problem getting the joystick to work with the UPS receiver or my computer (which is an Apple iMac G5 Desktop with 17" M9843LL/A (1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive).) One bit of advice: get rechargable batteries (type AA) for this joystick and you will like it even more.
ADDENDUM: Oct 29, 2009, the Logitech Freedom Joystick recently died, though I can't say why, one day it was working fine and the next it was not.
Customer Review: Best Review You'll Read Summary: 4 Stars
This joystick is awesome, surpassed my expectations thus far. The 'feel' is perfect, like my old Wingman Extreme 3D. I gave it 4 of 5 stars b/c that thumb button on the side is kind of awkward for me as a missile button. That's more of a personal preference, but still, it's awkward for me.
I was unsure to make this purchase b/c of some of the reviews I read. But after purchasing this product my conclusion of those poor reviewers are -they're stupid. lol. First paper in the box is labeled IMPORTANT: READ THIS FIRST! It describes the complexities of the wireless 2.4GHz system. If you have a lot of wireless devices there may be interference where some actions become erratic or have loss of signal. Other things that can interfere with the system are cell phones, A/V receivers, wireless networks. I have my cell phone and wireless router 2 feet from the joystick receiver w/ no problems. People reviewing say, 'even with the joystick right next to the receiver it acts erratic.' WELL... In the IMPORTANT paper, its first troubleshoot says to move the joystick and receiver FURTHER apart if you are experiencing problems. *Sigh* Granted I haven't had this joystick long, but sheesh it has a year warranty either way. It's worth the buy, especially if you are wanting to go cordless.
Customer Review: Works like a dream in FSX Summary: 4 Stars
I think this joystick is possessed - I haven't crashed a plane yet in Flight Sim X!!!!! It is kind of odd how it turns off to save power if you are in mid-flight, but it makes sense and a click of the button will turn it back on without affecting the flight.
Setup is easy but I didn't get any software with it (used) so I'm not sure exactly what software I'm supposed to be using with it. I installed Logitech software but it turns out to not detect the joystick. SO, Windows 7 can use it fine with the built in drivers and calibration works, so I'd recommend against the Logitech software.
This is wireless, and has it's own USB dongle - it doesn't use the universal USB dongle. I haven't had a problem with it dropping movements or button presses from 6 feet away. It uses 3x AA batteries, and I have used it for approx 10 hours without changing them so far. Time will tell!
Customer Review: Great Joystick, but has its problems Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using this joystick for about 1-2 years. It's a truly one-of-a-kind, great, user-friendly joystick (I even used this for a Car game). Many things that I like about it is its adaptability to many systems, its many buttons, which I use in Flight Simulator X for things like flaps, lights, engine start/stop, etc. This product connects to a USB with a long cord to the receiver. This will last a very long time. I even prefer this over the G990 by Logitech. But, after such a long time, the batteries would pop in and out of their holders and need constant adjustment. I think its time to move on to another joystick. But, overall, one of the best gaming devices I've ever used.
Customer Review: Cody's Review for Logitech Freedom 2.4 GHz Cordless Joystick Summary: 4 Stars
I was tempted to buy this joystick mainly because it was cordless. I don't like cords running along my desk. When I installed this joystick make sure to restart your computer because in the instructions it doesn't tell you to do so. You need to do so in order to move on to the next step. So after that little confusion everything worked just fine. It responds very well in my Flight Simulator X.
Appearance:
The joystick itself is the same size as the PRO version. The base is smaller and it has less keys. Also there was no grips on the bottom so it easily slides when you move the stick part of it.
