Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Alto Cordless Notebook Stand

Customer Review: Great Laptop Ergonomics Solution, plus so much more!
Summary: 5 Stars

I used to spend every day at my desk, hunched over my laptop in an effort to see the screen clearly. After some years my back started to hurt every day from this and it affected my posture when standing as well. This product has put my laptop right where a screen should be, and this has naturally corrected my posture while sitting at my desk.

PRO'S:
Easiest product I've ever installed, and I've worked in IT for a decade. No software needed; I put the batteries in the keyboard, plugged in the power to the stand, connected the single USB cord to my Dell Inspiron 1720 running Vista, and that was it. I didn't have to configure ANYTHING; didn't have to press a SINGLE button; it just worked instantly. Props to Logitech for creating the most effortless peripheral set-up I've ever experienced.

The keyboard is high quality, light but sturdy, with the type of soft-cushion typing resistance and solid build you'd expect from one of those pricey high-end product. The keyboard response while typing matches that of a wired keyboard (using natural perception). Key placement is pretty standard, except for the home/end/pgup/pgdwn/delete keys. If you are used to touch-typing with these, just be aware those have been move around a bit.

The little 3-port powered USB 2.0 hub at the rear-right of the stand is very convenient and would be great for users that have been stuck with a stand-alone hub to integrate their multiple USB peripherals.

The battery feature on the keyboard, when pressed, will display a colored light indicating the current charge state of the batteries (x2 disposable AAA's).

High quality rubberized padding is used on the keyboard wrist pad, as well as on the bottom of the stand itself, to grip your laptop's base. This provides enough friction to accommodate a 17" widescreen laptop (like mine) without any slippage. The base is also wide enough for a 17" (a perfect fit in fact), and doesn't suffer from the "fat man in a little jacket" syndrome like so many other accessories that are only 15" specific do.

There is a good range on the wireless keyboard; at least 25-30ft if you have line of sight with the stand (couldn't move it back any further in my office).

CON'S:
If I want to close my laptop all the way (I do this to keep dust out, turn off the screen, etc, when not in use), it requires me to lift the base up slightly so I can get the release-button (mounted on the top edge of the screen) past the lip of the stand. If your screen edge is fully flush with the edge of your laptop base (when closed), you may experience this minor inconvenience as well.

The Alto keyboard uses disposable batteries. I know, I could go purchase 2 rechargeable AAA's and a charger, but it would be great if there had been a built-in rechargeable solution; or at least a corded option... I mean really, how hard would an optional cord have been?! If you are a gamer, you may suffer from the same paranoia as I do when using this keyboard: "Are my batteries about to die!?!"

Depending on the location of your I/O ports, the attached rubberized wire management system may be nearly useless. I have my Ethernet, Firewire, VGA, etc, coming out of the right side of my laptop, and the cords don't go anywhere near the rear-right of the stand, where the management system is located. Great idea, but won't work for all users.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
After using this for a bit, I started to wonder why I don't just get a larger stand-alone monitor, hook it to my laptop, and retract the elevation arm on the Alto stand so the laptop can lay flat with its lid closed. This would basically turn it into a docking station with a wireless keyboard... sweet!
Amazing product over all; I would recommend it to anyone.
