Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech 931375-0403 G7 Laser Cordless Mouse BlackCustomer Review: Generally good, but some disappointments Summary: 3 StarsThis is my first review on Amazon, so I hope you'll cut me some slack... :-) Anyway, I'm a casual gameplayer (I like World of Warcraft), so I wanted a mouse that would be reliable, responsive, comfortable, and affordable. Basically everything anyone would want in a mouse, but even more so for gaming.
By the way, if you search Amazon for "logitech g7" you'll get multiple listings for this exact same item so, not knowing what else to do, I'm going to post this review on every listing. Wouldn't you do the same? I dunno...
So, first of all, I read lots of reviews to try and decide what would give me the best equipment for the money. This is a pretty expensive mouse, but I made it more affordable by buying a refurbished item online. That might have been a mistake, or it might not -- I'll never know. Anyway, keep that in mind here. Maybe "factory new" units will be less likely to display the problems I noted below.
So, here's the long and the short of it:
Pros:
- Nice heft and ergonomics.
- Laser seems to work well on all surfaces (except glass desktops -- forget it).
- Good software for customizing and adapting to particular games (i.e. you can customize the effect of clicking the thumb button, scrolling the wheel, tilting the wheel, etc.)
- Battery level is indicated via LED's on the mouse itself. Also, when low charge is critical, the software will pop up a window to tell you so. (However this window will not always intrude into the game you're playing, so beware.)
- Double lithium-ion batteries ensure that you're never up the creek without a mouse. While you're using one battery, you're recharging the other.
Cons:
- Scroll wheel has an annoying ratcheting sound & feel when spun.
- Left/right tilt function of scroll wheel failed before very long. Now when I push the wheel to the right, it just sticks there, instead of snapping back to center.
Neither here nor there:
The mouse provides a pair of buttons, "+" and "-", right behind the scroll wheel, for increasing or decreasing the sensitivity. For me, once I've got the sensitivity I want (which I can do through the Windows Control Panel), I really don't ever need to change it, so those two buttons are a waste for me. Although I guess I can reprogram them to do something more interesting. Ah well; to each his/her own.
And a note about the batteries:
The double battery system works fine for me, and it will work fine for you, as long as you realize that recharging a battery via a USB port (which is your only option) is a very long process. Basically, you'll want to keep the charger attached to your PC all the time, so that when your active battery runs out, you can swap 'em. By the way, of the two batteries I received in my refurb, one seems to take a lot longer to fully charge. In fact, by the time I've discharged the one battery through use, the weaker battery will only have just reached full charge in the charger. Not a real problem, but I figured you should be aware.
Bottom line: Good mouse if you're not a major gamer and can get a good discount price for it.
Customer Review: Logitech G7 more trouble than its worth Summary: 1 StarsI've owned my Logitech G7 for 3 months now, bought it new at a Fry's Electronics store. At first everything was great, I never experienced any dropoff in signal to the receiver or anything like that. My first problem with the mouse started about 1 month after owning it, I began noticing that the 2 rechargable batteries that came with it were already losing strength.. and they weren't holding quite as big a charge as they did when I first got it. No big deal I thought.. it still beats going through a box of AA's in a month.
Now 3 months later.. these batteries barely hold a charge at all. I replace them at least 2 times a day, sometimes 3. And replacement batteries are nowhere to be found, or bought on Logitech's website.. I could overlook this if the mouse could take normal batteries as well, but it can't.
And that isn't even my main problem with this mouse. About 1 week ago, it began exhibiting some strange behavior and it will at RANDOM count my mouse clicks, as double clicks. This is absolutely maddening... I hit back on Internet Explorer, it jumps back 2 pages, because of the double click. I hit forward once, in attempt to get back to the page I want, it double clicks again, and takes me too far. I try to move icons on my desktop, but the random double clicking opens everything I click on instead. And no, this is not a software issue.. I tested it on different computers both with, and without the logitech software. It also is not the double click speed setting.. I tried both extremities of this setting, and it still exhibited this flaw.
So upon searching Logitechs website about this, I find that a multitude of people are having this problem with the G7. Come to find that even people who had their mouse replaced by logitech (replaced with another G7, that is) are still experiencing this problem after a short period of having the new one. This problem severely hinders both gaming, and work that I do on my PC.
Finally I came to the conclusion that I just need to suck it up and face the fact that I flushed $100 down the toilet in buying this mouse. Steer very clear... this thing is way more trouble than its worth.
Customer Review: Pros overweigh cons Summary: 4 StarsIf only they can make the battery life a little bit longer, but I really like this mouse, you spent 30 seconds to replace the battery every day, and in stead you don't need to bother with lags and wires anymore. I like it.
Customer Review: Great if it warn you before battery dies! Summary: 4 StarsIs a great mouse. Just would be nice if it had an extra alarm to warn you when battery is dying. The small red light alarm is covered by your hand.
Couple times during a dungeon my mouse died and I didnt notice the red alarm light blinking.
Just swap the extra bettery and rdy to go, but I was static for few seconds and close to die.
Anyway enjoy it.
Customer Review: An excellent gaming or casual mouse Summary: 5 StarsI am not a hardcore gamer anymore, and spend less than an hour a week on FPS. However I've been using computers for twenty years and have gotten sick of poor quality mice that "stick" when trying to move them across the screen. I've really enjoyed the improvements with optical and wireless mice, so I figured I would give this newest product a try.
The first thing I noticed was that the "laser" technology makes a big difference. I thought maybe it was a gimmick, but the cursor glides effortlessly across my screen. It goes exactly where I want it to and I have never once had a problem with it. The PTFE pads glide very smoothly across my mouse pad (although I do have a high quality gaming mouse pad), yet they do attract some dirt and need to be wiped off once a week or so. Still, the bottom of the mouse is a very smooth surface. The mouse has three different speed settings, depending on how fast or slow you want the cursor to move (you can adjust this setting in Windows Control Panel as well, but it is much more efficient to do on the mouse). I did not install any of the software that came with it, and it works fine without it.
The biggest thing I like about this mouse is the way it handles the battery. Previous models contained a built-in battery and charging station. This was a huge pain. When the battery died, you would have to stick the mouse on the charger for 30 minutes before you could use it. Logitech realized this was a big inconvenience, so this model has two battery packs. You can charge one while the other is being used, then switch them out when needed. A typical battery will last around 3 hours of heavy game use or 3-4 days of regular Internet browsing. The charger also contains a detachable USB receiver so you can grab it in a hurry and easily use it on another computer without having to disconnect the charger from the wall. I find this very convenient, especially for people who have a laptop and want to use it.
The only flaw I found with the G7 is that it could have used one more programmable button. It's a little short on buttons when it comes to gaming and a right hand side button would be nice.
Even though I don't use my mouse for gaming much anymore, I find it is worth the money to have a nice quality mouse at my desk even for casual computer use. Newer Logitech gaming models, like the Logitech G9 Laser Mouse, seem to improve on the G7, however if you're looking for a cheaper way to get a good mouse, or just want a quality mouse for your computer, the G7 is definitely a good choice.
