Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Wireless Presenter R400 with Red Laser PointerCustomer Review: Great basic presenter tool Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a graduate student who does lots of presentations, so a presenter was a sensible buy for me. When it went on sale for Black Friday I scooped it up, and I just received it today.
First of all, it's smaller than I expected. Even with the picture of it in a man's hand, it looks about the size of a television remote control. It's much smaller than that - about half (or maybe a little more) the length of a standard TV remote. It's difficult to compare it to something else, but I'm a small woman with relatively small hands, and it fits very nicely in my hand. I also gesture a lot when I present, but I don't feel like this will fly out of my hand because of the rubberized texture to the outside. It also comes with a small pouch. It's not a cheap, thin plastic or slipcover pouch; it's the kind of zippered pouch you might buy separately if you needed to, and it looks and feels like it will give good protection to the presenter.
Now make no mistake - this is a basic presenter. I was kind of shocked at the price of presenters; a good, multifunction one with mouse features can cost almost $100. But I don't need a mouse pointer or any of that, so this was perfect. It has a forward button, a back button, a red laser pointer (green ones seem confined to the more expensive models), a "black screen button" which brings the presentation to a blank black screen, and a "play presentation button" which brings the presentation back from black screen mode. Simple. If you need anything more than that you should probably get a more expensive presenter. I do wish that it had an "end presentation" button, though.
It's definitely plug and play. I'm running a Sony VAIO with Windows Vista on it, and I just took the USB dongle out (it stores inside the controller - that shiny black thing at the bottom is the USB dongle), plugged it into my computer, opened a PowerPoint presentation and went to town. No installing drivers or any of that stuff, it just worked.
This is a great basic presenter if you do a lot of simple presentations that don't require a lot of fancy tricks - going to YouTube videos or other resources that are not on PowerPoint. Also, it's probably not good if you don't do presentations on plasma or LCD screens; the red laser doesn't show up well on them, so you'll need a green one. But if you only do the basic 15-minute conference presentation or simple class lectures without a lot of bells and whistles, this is a great little presenter.
As a last note, just for the record, today is Sunday. I have Amazon Prime, so I got free two-day shipping, and not needing it desperately, I just used the free shipping when I ordered it Friday. They used a local courier service to deliver it and everything else I ordered that day on Sunday! Just wanted to note Amazon.com's great customer service.
