The Performance Mouse lives up to its name!
Packaging: First, packaging was really well done. I didn't need the "Jaws of Life" to get into the package and everything was well protected. It was a really nice touch to have a zippered bag for the accessories. From starting to open the package to using the mouse was about 90 seconds.
Accessories: Speaking of accessories, there was not only a wall charger (more on that in a minute), but a USB cable for charging and an extension USB cable for the "Unifying Emitter" (more on that later) or for the charging cable. The wall charger is a USB power plug and uses whatever USB cable you plug into it so you could use it to charge other items that can charge from a USB port. Nice extra value item.
The Documentation was easy and clear. Logitech always does a good job in this area using clear pictures and brief descriptions.
Comfort: The MS mouse is supposed to be ergonomic, but I have always found it to be uncomfortable and awkward. This Logitech mouse is comfortable and accurate. The mouse fit my hand better than my Logitech G5 and is weighted perfectly. I also have a wireless Microsoft mouse that I am comparing this unit to and it is much better balanced and contoured. The buttons and the wheel are in just the right spots and the textured surface is comfortable. Note that my hands are average to small male size hands (4 5/8 grip on a tennis racquet). I had my daughter who has small hands (4 1/4 grip) also try the mouse and she loved the size also. Note that the mouse has non-slip rubberized pads on the right and left sides, so no slipping around when accessing any button. My G5 has a textured surface which works the same way, both have a great feel to them.
Tracking: It does work on everything! The claims for the "Darkfield Laser" are completely true. We tried it on a glass table, on wood on a curtain, on paper, even on a gamer mouse pad and it tracked perfectly. Comparing it with my G5 it tracks a little slower, but it is not supposed to be a gamer mouse. Unlike my Microsoft wireless mouse (Microsoft® Natural® Wireless Laser Mouse 6000), it doesn't lose it's place and doesn't stutter. I am not sure how the Logitech Darkfield Laser works, but I want it in all my mice!!
Charging: Most rechargeable or battery mice don't work while charging or until you replace the batteries. The Logitech Performance Mouse MX will work while plugged into the USB cable and charging. It just seems like a nice corded mouse until it is charged up and ready to go again. It does use the micro-USB plug that a lot of manufacturers are going to, so your old USB cables won't work.
Wireless: It uses something called a "Unifying Emitter." OK, that means it is not bluetooth and needs it's own little special receiver that takes up one of your USB ports. At least they made it so small that you can plug it into your laptop or desktop and forget it. The claim is that you can have up to 6 different mice/keyboards/whatevers uping the same receiver. I guess you could have a small mouse for on the road, the big mouse for home plus a keyboard, and maybe some kind of game controller. Different setups in different locations is their marketing claim. I put it in a hub connected to my desktop computer and it worked fine . . . in fact, it shared nicely with my G5 as both were hooked up at the same time. We put it in my HP notebook and carried it around the house testing surfaces, again it worked fine. We didn't really test the range of the emitter, but it did work up to 6 feet away. I noticed they said not to have metal in the way between the emitter and the mouse, so I would guess it's range is fairly short. No software needed in either system, it just worked with both XP and Vista.
Controls: The scroll wheel is really nice. It has two modes, if you move it slowly it has click stops (no noise, just feel). When you press a release button that is conveniently located slightly behind the scroll wheel, it frees the scroll wheel to spin, enabling you to scroll through pages very fast. When you touch the wheel to stop it from spinning, the scrolling stops instantaneously. You can simply push the release button again and you're back to "click" scrolling. I like it . . . in fact, I tend to leave it in the "hyper-fast" scrolling mode.
There are four thumb controls that are Zoom, Forward & Back Buttons. These three buttons are located a bit above the thumb rest and are very intuitive. The zoom button is just above your thumb, but far enough that I don't accidentally press it. When I do use it, the wheel increases or decreases the size of a photo image. Hit it again, and the zoom mode goes off, but nicely leaves the image at the size that you set it so you can continue working. The plate on which you rest your thumb is also a control. You click it to switch between your open applications. Couldn't get this work without installing the software. The software took forever to install, not sure what it was doing as it doesn't seem to have that much functionality.
Software: Installation problems with the software. The software that comes in the package supposedly lets you adjust some mouse settings to suit your own preferences. However, after my first install of the software I still had to go into the Control Panel / Mouse application to set things like the number of lines per wheel "click," the "double-click speed," and the pointer image. There was nothing to change the function of the buttons etc.. The software did nothing, but I knew there should have been an integrated suite of software that handled all of these things, or at least something in the documentation that informed me that certain mouse settings had to be made in the control panel. When I went on the Logitech website I found the exact question I just raised and they had a picture of the tabs that should have been available in their software -- they were all missing in my installation. It said to "re-install" and I learned that you have to have the mouse attached when you install the software. That's silly for a wireless mouse that you might be using on various machines. I emailed Logitech and suggested that they improve their installation routines. By the way, you still have to go into the control panel to make some basic adjustments. Only negative on the product.
Misc: Real slippery feet on the mouse make it much easier to make fine movements with the pointer, no need for my special gaming mouse pad. I bet you could use a glass sheet or a tile for your mouse pad with this one!
Overall, this mouse has impressed me more than any in my recent memory. I may even use it instead of my G5 on my main system. It is so good, I am figuring on taking on the road with me for my notebook on my next trip. I know I could buy a little travel mouse, but I like this one and it is worth the extra space in my travel bag.
Bottom line: It is well worth the money you pay for it, and I can't say that about a lot of products.
