Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Wireless Anywhere Mouse MXCustomer Review: Mouse is nice, but accompanying software is causing major problems on Windows XP Summary: 5 Stars
[Edit 7-18-2010: I've changed my rating from two stars to five stars. The reason? The Logitech software has installed flawlessly on my new Windows 7 operating system, and after almost a year with this mouse, I have grown to love it. It's the best mouse I've ever owned.]
Yes, the mouse is handsome, well made, scrolls super fast if you want it to, works perfectly on glass, and has an unobtrusive USB antennae.
However, none of these features means very much if the controller software is screwing up my system.
When I first installed the software and opened it, I found that there were no mouse control settings. I was confused. How do I configure the settings on my mouse when there are no actual settings menus in the software? I spent a lot of time searching around and thinking surely I was just missing something obvious. I finally gave up and made my way to the Logitech website, where I eventually found my way to a help page which explains what to do if the controller software doesn't show you a settings menu. Oh ho! I saw that there was a menu tab which was supposed to be there but wasn't!
Well, I followed all the instructions, and 6 reboots, 3 installs/uninstalls, and one re-naming of a driver file type later I finally had working software! That was surprisingly difficult, and I am used to messing around in system folders. I think most people would have had an even harder time.
So I had finally configured my mouse buttons, but then I noticed my wireless card had stopped working. So after spending time investigating that, I eventually got it going again (after restarting it). That's when I noticed my touchpad and right/left click buttons on my laptop had also stopped working! I went back to the Logitech site but didn't see this problem mentioned. I'm not even sure where to go from here. Maybe reinstall the touchpad driver and see if that works? (edit, 10-4-09, Yes, that's what worked. I reinstalled the touchpad driver and it worked again after that.)
Hey, I am only running Windows XP Pro over here -only the most common and stable operating system on the planet, do I really have to spend 3 hours bug-hunting my fancy new $80.00 mouse? I have had 3 other logitech mice in the past, and I have had slight problems with the control software with those, but nothing this bad. For instance, those other mice would reset the cursor speed on the touch pad to it's slowest setting. If I reset the speed to medium, the mouse controller would put it back to slow again. A minor annoyance, and certainly not as bad as losing functionality altogether, as I am facing now. I think Logitech makes a good mouse, but the software... I'm not so impressed.
Other problems I have with the mouse: as other's have mentioned, the two buttons on the left side of the mouse are positioned just a little bit inconveniently for me to feel comfortable using them. Maybe this would feel better with practice? I also find the mouse just a little too narrow. To grip the mouse (with my thumb on one side and two smallest fingers on the other side) I have to hold my hand a little bit too closed for comfort. I can already feel that over a few hours this might cause cramping and tired muscles. I have never had this problem with any of the other three basic Logitech mice I've owned in the past. This makes me wonder, do we really need a portable mouse to be uncomfortably small? I for one would rather deal with the mouse being a half-inch wider when packing it for travel, then have to deal with hand strain when actually using it. It's not like that half-inch is going to make or break the trip, you know what I mean? (edit, 10-4-09, I'm actually not finding the narrowness of the mouse to be a problem. I've just learned to hold the mouse lightly, and I'm not having any discomfort. FYI, this mouse is mainly held by my fingertips, it's not big enough to rest my hand on top of it. This doesn't seem to be a problem, but it is a little different than some of the bigger mice I've used.)
Btw, my hand size is usually a men's medium when wearing gloves. Occasionally a large glove will fit me better, but usually a medium is the one that fits right.
In any event, I will probably be able to sort out the software issues and get everything working (I hope so anyway) but if the small size is a longer term problem then that would be unfortunate for me. My recomendation to others is to go to a store and play with all the mice there, so you can really get a feel for how it feels in your hand, but then come back home and buy it on Amazon, of course! ;)
(edit, 10-4-09, Now that I've been using this mouse for a few days I am finding that I like it more and more. The software issues were annoying, but that's all sorted out now, and the mouse is doing everything it's supposed to do, and doing it well. I would probably bump my star rating up to 3 or 4 stars, but I think it's actually a good thing to be quite critical of a mouse that costs this much, so I'll leave it at 2 stars.)
cheers and best of luck.
