Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony 1100 Universal Remote with Color Touch ScreenCustomer Review: Best Remote Ever Summary: 5 Stars
Sometimes it feels like I've been on a quest for the ultimate remote. I remember getting some of the very earliest universal remotes, where you had to sit there with the two remotes pointed at each other and teach every command. Then someone got the bright idea of device codes, which was a great step forward. Unfortunately, most of them didn't come with every code you actually needed and so you were stuck back in programming mode. Or you'd update one of your devices, which of course would be too new to have a code for it yet. Then came the online code lists so that the remote manufacturer could add new codes as new devices reached the market. Logitech's genius was that they took this idea to the next level by connecting the remote to your computer and then programming it directly via the internet. Sheer brilliance! The Harmony remotes are advertised as being compatible with more than 100,000 devices from over 5,000 manufacturers.
For a long time now I've had the Harmony Xbox 360 remote, and it has worked great. However, it has eventually reached a point where it was getting a little flaky, sometimes getting stuck on a command and resending it continuously. The buttons were getting a little dirty, and it was just time to replace it. Having been so happy with my first Harmony, I really didn't mind the cost of the 1100. I have since been blown away by this product.
There were two hiccups with switching to this remote. The first was that for whatever reason the Harmony software couldn't just switch my old remote out for the new one. Most it can, but apparently my old one lacked some features that the newer profiles require. So I wound up having to re-enter my components and activities. This wasn't difficult or anything -- it took all of 10 minutes. But it was a minor annoyance.
The second issue was more serious because my Favorite channels weren't working. For example, channel 244 was being received by the satellite as 24. I tried adjusting the various settings that have to do with this, and nothing worked so I called Logitech. Let me tell you that their support is both very professional and powerful. We ultimately wound up having to use a special recording format to learn the exact commands being sent for numbers 0-9 by my satellite remote. This is an advanced recording mode that apparently learns more details from the signal. (By the way, for anyone who might need to learn a command with this remote you need to point your old remote at the BOTTOM of the Harmony 1100 rather than the top. The receiver is on the bottom edge, below and to the left of the Logitech icon.) Anyway, Logitech's support was then able to view the signals that my remote had just recorded, go into them on a code level and modify them to give the best results. They then sent the new codes back to my remote and the favorite channel buttons now work flawlessly. It's amazing that they're able to do something like that!
What makes the 1100 stand out against the other Harmony remotes is the sheer level of customization that's possible. For example, they think the satellite Red, Green, Yellow and Blue buttons should be buried down in one of the menus. I disagree because of how much they're used. (This, by the way, was why I liked the Harmony Xbox 360 remote -- it had those buttons on the face of the remote.) Well I have now programmed the left bar on the screen to show those buttons all the time while I'm in my Watch TV activity. It was a snap to do, and gives the exact results I was looking for. (They also include a good number of icons for these buttons, including Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down for TiVo users.) Every single button -- whether one of the physical buttons to the right of the screen or the many, many on-screen choices can be programmed to do anything you want. It's super easy to do, and you can really make the remote your own.
One other point I'd like to mention is that some reviewers have stated that you have to download channel icons for your favorites. This has now changed. Logitech has updated the software to allow any JPG, PNG or BMP image of the appropriate dimensions and maximum file size. So while there is a great website with icons for the various Harmony remotes, you can easily create your own if you'd like. By the way, you can even use your own image for the screen background, and I think you can set it up as a slide show if you'd like. On any page where you can use your own image, the Harmony software also gives you the image requirements. No guess work!
Ordinarily, the problems that I did encounter would have dropped a star from my rating. However the level of support that Logitech provided was exceptional enough to overcome that. I have no reservations about recommending this remote to others. I would however recommend getting the RF Wireless Extender as well; especially given how cheap it is at the moment. If you're spending this kind of money for a remote, why wouldn't you want the added luxury of never having to think about what direction the remote is pointing? The extender works in tandem with the remote so that you have total control over which devices receive signals from which sources. In other words, the system will send commands from your choice of the remote OR the extender, but not both and you'll never get a situation where a device could receive duplicate signals and get confused.
