Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech 720p Webcam Pro 9000Customer Review: Great camera Summary: 5 Stars
This was my first foray into the webcam market, and as a "videophile" I was quite impressed with the performance of this webcam.
So lets start with the good-
The webcam has exceptional image quality.
The higher end resolution settings are impractical for streamlining live video, but if you like making youtube or other homemade videos this is a great option. There is a lot of flexibility in adjusting webcam settings, which is a definite plus if you are working in a low light environment or simply want to make your video look better without having to import it into a video editing program. The frame rate is excellent, if you know how to tweak your settings (see below).
The microphone audio is great.
The audio clarity was also very impressive. I had actually Skype'd with another user who had this exact webcam, and I was really pleased with how well the microphone functioned. It was responsive, and the audio was very clear and free of static, humming or other artifacts. As a person that does a lot of business over the phone, being able to hear clean audio was very refreshing.
The bad or at least inconvenient-
The instruction manual is very basic and doesn't delve very deeply into the features or troubleshooting.
As many users have reported, when they first install the camera they are prompted with the option of using the "RightLight" feature...the feature sounds good, and states that it allows the camera to function well in low light settings. However, what it doesn't state is how the camera actually does this. When I had turned this option on initially, my frame rate dropped to about 3-5 frames per second, which was completely unacceptable. At first I thought my webcam was defective, but later discovered that this feature is able to work in low light because it actually increases the exposure time for each frame in order to capture more light. The camera controls actually have sufficient options where you can improve low light performance without having this setting enabled. All you really need to do is drop your "exposure" slider as low as you can go, and compensate by increasing gain and also making adjustments with your brightness, contrast and color depth. Using these options brought my frame rate back up to 30fps.
Overall
Great camera once you work out the kinks, specifically adjusting the camera settings to work well in the room you are using. It meets my video conferencing needs, and when coupled with Skype creates an invaluable business resource.
