The C600 is a fantastic little camera for the home user. First off, the installation was easy and hassle-free. XP (Service Pack 2) detected the new device and installed all the drivers automatically on both my desktop and a laptop test machine, without even prompting for the CD. The camera showed up under My Computer and you can take pictures directly from there without the need for any special software.
The most impressive feature of the C600 for me is its remarkable ability to perform in low-light situations. The RightLight technology is not a gimmick. It works exactly as advertised and adjusts to lighting conditions automatically for the best results. I turned off all the lights in my room and with just the glow of my LCD monitor as the sole light source, the C600 was still able to pick out sharp detail from as far as 6 feet away. It could even make out the writing on a book (see my image in the gallery).
I've owned other webcams, like the Creative Live! Cam Notebook Pro, and they just go black in situations like this, rendering them useless. The C600 is by far the easiest to use and most fully-featured. The two hinged "claw" joints allow the C600 to be mounted on a desktop monitor or a laptop screen, though I found it stays best on laptops. The claw can be unfolded all the way so it lies flat, so there shouldn't be any monitor this can't be rested on top of.
The underside is rubberized in 3 places to prevent slippage. This is just one of the fine touches Logitech put effort into. The USB plug, for example, has a circular depression for better thumb grip. It also has a small ferrite bead choker right before the plug. This prevents high-frequency buzzing and interference, important because the C600 has a built-in microphone. This added feature eliminates the need for a separate headset.
Mechanically, the head can swivel completely around in 360 degree freedom. Because the wire comes out the back of the camera's "head" and not through the "neck", it's very easy to swivel the head around and pivot it up and down. It weighs in at a feathery 3.4 oz, though I feel that the base should probably be a little heavier for anchorage.
The C600 worked flawlessly with Skype and picture quality was quite good. As reported by another reviewer, it does indeed work with the PS3 (tested on update 3.01) so it is an added bonus for gamers. It does not work with the XBOX 360 or Macs.
All in all, a very good webcam for the home user, with solid performance and a reasonable price.
