Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander WRE54GCustomer Review: WRE54G Summary: 5 Stars
I use this product personally and recommend it to anyone planning on extending a basic wireless network where they don't want to spend any time with setup or maintenance.
Where I work we have about 20-30 people in Las Casitas, or small apartments, some of which were out of range of the wireless network. Setting this up in an outdoor gazebo (not Eric's dread gazebo) allowed everyone access to the network. It has worked perfectly for a year and change even though it is outside and in a public area.
It locks up every now and then and will require *somewhat* frequent reboots. But all in all this is a pretty stable device that fits a niche. If you are technically inclined I would suggest a WR54GL instead. But this is perfect for people who just want something easy to setup that works without any real troubleshooting.
Customer Review: Works flawlessly if set up correctly Summary: 5 Stars
I used Anthony Taylor's review to set it up and ignored the printed instructions. It worked like a charm the first time and total setup time was about 10 minutes. It changed a PC from only a 50% signal (barely usable with frequent disconnects) to a consistent 100% signal. One feature I like is the multiple AC connectors, letting you plug it in with the standard cord or right into an outlet on the wall (which I chose).
There is a sheet included in the box that tells what firmware version your router needs, so pay attention to that. Also, it claims to be compatible with Linksys devices, but I saw nowhere where it claimed to be compatible with anything else. I use it with a Linksys Wireless-G broadband router (WRT54G) and have no problems. In all, it works for me and does exactly what I needed it to do.
Customer Review: works great! Summary: 5 Stars
although I had some trepidation about buying this wi-fi range extender given the other reviewer's installation experience, I found it to work almost as advertised. I took it out of the box, plugged it in an outlet in a room where my laptop had very spotty, if any, coverage, and hit the "auto configure" button. lots of colors and lights later, I had full signal in the room. I did have one hitch but it was an easy fix. I had full signal but no internet access. I accessed my router and looked at the numbers to make sure they were identical to the extender's. the "default gateway" had a different number. I changed it in the extender and got perfect functionality. given that a router now costs $50 or less, I think the wre54g is very pricey at $90 or more, but for me well worth the price fo expanding the network without additional wiring.
Customer Review: LinkSys Wireless Range Expander Summary: 5 Stars
What a great product, finally I have coverage over the rest of the house with 100% signal. I using a WRT54G Linksys Wireless Router in the den as my base unit. The signal just was reaching the other end of the house even with the high gain Antenna's I added. I read the other reviews and skip the CD setup in the box. First I signed into and disabled the Security on the 54G. Then I plugged in the expander, held down the button till the lights went blue and then signed into the expander 192.168.1.240 and setup the security to match the base unit and saved it. Then I went back to 54G and turn on secruity again and everything worked like a champ! Not sure why Linksys didn't write it up that simple, guess it may vary based on your configuration. Now my wife and I can go anywhere in the house and the patio with a strong signal.
Customer Review: No Trouble With Set-up Summary: 5 Stars
I got to tell you--after reading all the reviews about how difficult this thing was to set up, I was really really scared. But, I had a gift certificate to spend, so I said "What the heck?" Well, I had ABSOLUTELY NO TROUBLE AT ALL setting this thing up. All I did was follow the instructions. YES, I had WEP enabled. All you need to do is know your key (I wrote it down) and set up is ridiculously easy.
Maybe I got lucky? I don't know. What I do know is thing was up and running (two blue lights) in less than 15 minutes.
Also, my router is on the 2nd floor of my house and I put the expander in my basement (under ground, no windows). My desktop in the basement went from "Very Low" to "Excellent" signal strength. No problems at all.
This was a great purchase for me.
