Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander WRE54G

Customer Review: Does what I wanted and needed it to do...
Summary: 5 Stars

My WRT54G wireless router is upstairs on one end of the house. My wireless capable BluRay player and 40" LCD TV are downstairs on the other end of the house. I wanted to be able to access Netflix on the set downstairs, but the distance and structure between the router and the BluRay prevented a sufficiently strong signal from getting through. I found the range extender available for under $30 as a factory reconditioned unit and thought it was worth the gamble to try it. Wow! I did have to set it up unsecured, but in doing so, the set-up was quick and I have five bar service from one end of the house to the other. If having a secure LAN was more important, I'd probably have to use different equipment. I did try to set up a secure LAN, but was unsuccessful after a couple of hours and a lot of forum searching. If you are comfortable with this kind of setup, don't need leading edge technology and are on a budget, this works beautifully!

The extender came well packaged and arrived quickly and looked like new.

Customer Review: Just plugged it in, no problems with my Mac Mini!
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading the other reviews, I was steeling myself to deal with a really hairy installation process. In fact, I wasn't even sure if this product would work w/a Mac because there was an installation cd that talked about "your PC."

But here's what happened: I opened the setup cd and put it in the drive. I plugged the power thing into the back of the Range Expander, plugged it in, and held down the auto configuration button for 5 seconds as directed. The light blinked for less than 10 seconds, and then was solid blue. I unplugged it, took it upstairs, plugged it in again, and that was it! I now have 8-10 bars on my wireless connection, compared with 0-2 before.

Couldn't be easier or more effective. Oh, and our house is built of 15-inch stone walls on the exterior, thick plaster walls on the interior, and the modem is in an addition outside the house. With the expander, I get great coverage all over the main part of the house -- through 15 inches of solid stone!

Customer Review: Easy Setup - Just Follow In Box Instructions
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the numerous reviews for the Linksys Range Expander WRE54G and like many thought I was in for a rough ride. I purchased the Range Expander in March-08 and I'm not sure if the in-box instructions or the unit's firmware (or both) have been upgraded since most of the other reviews were written but I had absolutely no problem setting it up and having it on line in 20 minutes or less. My system consists of a Netgear WGT624 (Ver 1.3 software) wireless router. I connected the Linksys Range Expander to my CNET Switch which is connected to the output of the router with a standard Cat-5 cable. I followed the hard wire setup in the Linksys instructions that came with the Range Expander and moments later I was operational. The only pre-install information I made sure that I had at hand was the WEP security sequence and the gateway IP address. Works great and I am very pleased. So come on you amateurs, read the instructions for once and forget about all the "high tech" maneuvers.

Customer Review: Worked great right out of the box
Summary: 5 Stars

This Range Expander works perfectly and was easy to install. After I initially installed the software I plugged the Expander unit into a wall outlet close to my Linksys WRT54GS Wireless router and pressed the auto configure button on the side of the Expander unit. It took a few seconds for it to locate the network then both of the blue lights on the front Expander unit lit up. I then took the Expander unit to my home office which is located in a separate bilding over 150' from the room where I have my computer and wireless router. I plugged it in a wall outlet and within a few seconds it automatically cycled to find the network connection. Without the Expander I could not use the internet in my office, after installing the Expander I have 5 bar service. I also move the Expander unit ocassionly to another remote part of my house when I take my laptop there and it does the same thing. It works great for me with very little efffort. I highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Make your Network BIG
Summary: 5 Stars

This is truly a "no brainer" product. It will perform exactly as advertised. My wife runs a business next to our house and the signal from our router was always poor, so I purchased this to increase the signal. The only down side to this product is that it will only work with the "g" type routers. So I had to upgrade to a WRT54g from the BEFW11s4. Note: It will work with your "b" type adapters, but your speed will be limited by your adapters. It has been my experience that Linksys works best with other Linksys, so I recommend using all Linksys for your network. The WRT54g is an excellent router, it has more features and so far is more stable than my old router. Use a laptop to locate the edge of your signal area and place the expander just with in it. It has an "auto configuration" button. Then you can use the browser utility to configure it. You will get roughly double your routers range. If you need more range buy it!
