Customer Review: Simple setup - very quick
Summary: 5 Stars

This was very easy to setup, however I based it on using these instructions and ignored everything else that came in the box.

1-Disable WEP on your Router or AP
2-Plug in range expander and hold the auto-configuration button for 30 seconds(if everything goes well both lights on the expander will turn blue) <and unplug while still holding button. Plug back in after 10-15 secs.> I did not have to do the unplug but I have left it in for reference.
3-open your Internet explorer browser and type 192.168.1.240 (default ip of expander), a window will pop up. leave the user name blank and put admin as a password (this is default password). Also open up a second window for your router config settings as well.
4-make sure that the default gateway and subnet mask settings are identical with your Router or AP,change password on the expander if desired & save settings. (all settings should be correct due to auto configuration).
5-Enable WEP on the expander, once again remember use same settings as in your Router or AP, save settings again. Here is the only hitch - make sure you edit the security settings so that the WEP settings match your router WEP settings. You may need to jot these down prior to disabling WEP on the router in step 1. Save your WEP settings on the range expander. You may not get a confirmation box back until you have enabled WEP on your router.
6-Go to your Router or Ap settings and enable WEP. Bang you're DONE. Enjoy

Customer Review: Great product, great support from Amazon

I'd read the reviews on Amazon, so I was prepared for some configuration hassles. And, I was not disappointed :). I plugged in the WRE and tried to configure it using the CD. It didn't work. So, I called Linksys, and, after a wait of about 2 minutes, was talking with a very helpful rep who walked me through troubleshooting the problem. As it turns out, the WRE was defective. She told me to return it to Amazon; before she hung up, she told me how to configure the new one and also told me to feel free to call if I had any problems.

So, I went online and started the return process. I have to give HUGE kudos to Amazon on this one. I'd never returned anything before (probably over 200 purchases from Amazon over the years) and I was amazed at how easy it was. I was even more amazed that I received the replacement WRE the *very next day*. You just can't beat service like that. Well done, Amazon...

I got the new unit and went through the configuration process (don't use the CD, use cables to hook the WRE and the PC from which you configure the WRE directly to the router, go to 192.186.1.240 and configure directly). 5 minutes later, the WRE was up and running, WEP enabled. Signal strength went from poor (1 bar out of 5) to excellent (5 bars out of 5). Just what I was looking for.

This product, once running, is worth any hassles you have to go through.

Customer Review: Amazon reviewers save the day!

I have a Linksys WRT54AG router, which runs our home network. We use wireless WEP encryption for our laptops. I really needed this little box, as there were many wireless blackspots in our house. I was worried about buying it after all the negative reviews here. I need not have worried, as the comments from everyone made the installation very painless.

As advised by Amazon reviewers, I completely ignored the enclosed Linksys setup CD, and followed the suggestions here. Despite that, I couldn't get the wireless autoconfig to work, even though I had the required two blue lights, the WEP was disabled on the router and I did a power-off reset of the expander. So I followed the advice of Sr J. Gonzalez and connected the box with the provided Ethernet cable. Instantly the expander address of 192.168.1.240 was visible on Internet Explorer. I matched all the settings by pulling up the router page on the computer screen at the same time. One thing to mention is that you need to enter the "gateway" which is your router's IP address on your local network - usually 192.168.1.1, but check what your router uses! I had the expander installed and working perfectly within about 20 minutes.

So far so good! I am delighted with it, but I think it is all thanks to people here who told me how to set it up. Thanks so much to all of you!

Customer Review: Works Great ... But read this first ...

I have a WRT54G. My wireless computer is some 80+ ft away and gets a signal that swings wildly from 1Mbps to 24 Mbps. At 1Mbps to 12 Mbps the internet connection is bad, slow, and sometimes just won't load bigger internet pages.

The WRE54G was and is the absolute perfect answer for expanding your wireless network coverage area and signal strength.

Now the signal stays between 24 Mbps and usually approaches 54 Mbps (It's perfect). The WRE54G is also located 80 - 100 feet from my WRT54G.

That said ... the WRE54G is only compatible with the original WRT54G firmware of v2.02.7 (using internet explorer type 192.168.1.1 and use no user name and "admin" as password to view) Do Not - upgrade your firmware to v3.01.3 or any other number beginning with 3 !!!!!!!! Doesn't make since but that's the way it is. Cost me an hour on the customer service line.

Also as everyone else says on this board, you must disable WEP security (from the above 192.168.1.1 page) if you have it turned on.

With Linksys you just have to plan on a call to custiomer service. Best to call at like 1am.

Heck, I should have just bought this thing to boost my neighbors internet signal and then canceled my ISP.

Love it.

Customer Review: Easy to install, works great

If you don't have to worry about a security enabled wireless network (which must be the case in many of these reviews) setting up is a 10 minute job. You simply plug in this range expander some place in proximity to your existing router (mine was an older model Netgear 'B') and press a button. No need to install the software included. When the extender's blue lights come on in a minute or two, you are ready to find the best spot for range extender. Since I wanted to be able to use wireless in our second building next door to the building where the router resides, I plugged mine in so the unit sits on a window ledge in the second building which, line of sight, was about 110 feet from the wall of the building where the router resides. The computer would sometimes work in the second building on the side closest to the router-building but the signal was erratic and if it worked at all showed 'very weak'.
The repeater takes the weak signal and amplifies it to a strong signal. Inside the second house, on the same floor, the wireless signal is now excellent. On the floor below, the signal is `very good' in all but the most remote part of house. Excellent product for $78 at Amazon and I see it's even cheaper now. My only regret was not doing this months ago.
