Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WTR54GS Wireless G Travel Router with SpeedboosterCustomer Review: Killer portable wireless Summary: 5 Stars
Are you a road warrior? Do you travel to Europe? Do you want a box that's easy to plug into your network to add wireless when you're home? If so, this is the box for you!
I set up two profiles - one to set up the box as a router when I'm on the road and want to plug into a hotel network, and another to make it act like a switch when I want to plug it into my home router to provide a wireless extension to my network.
The first was easy - just follow the setup wizard. Or if you have other "smart" LinkSys products, just press the button. Caution: DO NOT press the button after you have set it up - it'll reset to default settings and then go hunting for another LinkSys device.
Setting it up as a switch is a bit more difficult, but LinkSys support provided a clear answer within 24 hours. To make it work like a switch or hub:
1. Find out the base IP address of your router by connecting to its admin page. It'll be something like 192.168.xx.1.
2. Connect to this router's web-based pages. Default IP is 192.168.16.1.
3. Set a static IP for this box to your router's address plus 1. For example, 192.168.xx.2.
4. Turn off DHCP on this box and click Save - you'll be disconnected.
5. Most Important: Now connect this box using the ETHERNET (not INTERNET) plug to your router.
Voila! You now have a wireless extension to your home network that will support multiple wireless connections.
Tip: As you set up the router, go to the Admin menu and save your profile. I have two separate ones saved on my laptop - one to turn the box back into a router for the road and a second to make it a switch at home.
Customer Review: Impressive Range Summary: 5 Stars
Well I've only had this thing for a day... but I am already thoroughly impressed. It sets up just like any other Linksys router... of which I've set up 3 in the last month.
I am very impressed with the range. I bought this to keep in my laptop case because of its size and weight. The cloth case, as well as the flat ethernet cable are a nice touch.
The range is very good for what it is. I live in a fairly large house, and it provides access over the entire house. Granted, the connection strength falls to a couple bars out of 5, where the new wireless N router we have still has 5 out of 5 bars. Transfer rates drop dramatically from the usual 30 megabits per second to only a few at the range edges... but that is to be expected.
But it *does* provide coverage over the entire house... not something I was expecting for a product meant to be used in a hotel room. I am quite pleased with this purchase. This product could very easily be used as the main router in a small apartment... if the intention is to only run a wireless network used for internet access. And simply packed up when traveling. Gamers will likely want something beefier, but I'm quite fond of the internal antennas.
I also own and would recommend the WRT54GC for a small home network... and it costs about half the price.
Customer Review: Best gadget I never knew I needed Summary: 5 Stars
This was an impulse buy for me. My logic at the time of purchase was that I could pre-configure it as a grab and run WAP and throw it up wherever and whenever a quick and dirty hot spot was needed in our four floor public building. The fact that it had limited range was more a plus than a liability. After all, it was designed for a limited area such as a hotel or a conference room.
I was surprised with the configuration and security options which matched those of the general purpose WRT54G and secondly, at least my unit has fantastic coverage. When placed on the second floor I get about 200' coverage in every direction and ample bandwidth using up to 10 notebooks.
I'm amazed at the number of speakers who appear for seminars, lectures and training sessions assuming the availability of wireless Internet. Most initially try to connect with their cellular solutions but quickly abandon them in favor of the WAP. In that regard this little travel router has been a God send.
I have had it about a year now and it has been quite reliable.
Customer Review: Ultimate Traveller's choice for wire-free web browsing Summary: 5 Stars
This product is so small that its size is less than my palm size. Coverage is also good. Its in-built wireless routing features are amazing. Initially, I had some trouble in installing this device for infrastructure network but after having a quick look at the product manual, I have understood that its just click and go online kind of stuff. Idle choice for techies who travel a lot and want to be wire-free where-ever they go. It offers a wide range of options for incoming internet connection type. So many complex features are equipped into this small piece of equipment which makes it more amazing. One disadvantage that I have observed is that it cannot be configured intially using wireless notebooks which are not Secure Easy Setup (SES) compatiable. One has to have a desktop PC with ethernet card for initial setup. Don't know whether there are any other alternative ways. Haven't explored this product to that extent.
Customer Review: Superb Travel Companion (also for office and small workgroup setup) Summary: 5 Stars
I have just received this unit and it is superb! Being a long time client of Linksys I have come to expect the kind of flawless setup and full feature set. The novelty in this unit is that it may also connect to the internet wirelessly (other than the usual broadband wired connection). I have had a few travel routers (DLink PocketRouter, 3Com Travel Router as well as Linksys Compact Router). I have been replacing them in the order above and now have moved to the WTR54GS as my travel and mobile unit. I believe that now I'll settle down for this unit for a while.
A great travel package includes a PDA such as the iPAQ 5550 with LifeView LifeJAcket and ThinkOutside StowAway bluetooth keyboard and mouse, as well as the Linksys WTR54GS. With that one can use a hotel TV as monitor, keyboard and mouse and still enjoy a wireless connection in the room and neighbourhood. All works superbly!
