Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless RouterCustomer Review: Great Upgrade from Airport Extreme (300 mbs) Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, First of all, I just want to say that I am a senior in network administration, and I have been though my fair share of routers. I recently had an airport extreme and loved it, but I found myself in need to two separate radio bands.
One work review:
Fandamtastic
If you have ever configured a Linksys router, nothing from what you loved has changed(192.168.1.1 password:admin). Obviously, there are a couple of extra tabs and a few more setting in the wireless tab, but it's still the same old game. Make sure if you want true wireless N you read the little help tidbits on the side in the wireless pane. Set everything to wide 40mhz for true 300mbs speed, and leave it at auto 20mhz for backwards compatibility. I had a small increase in range from my Airport Extreme and a huge increase over any of my old WRT54G's. I haven't tried using the usb port for NAS or UPnP yet (I have a dedicated computer for this)
Pro:
Wireless speeds are amazingly fast, just as I expected
The wired speeds are of course fantastic
The router looks sexy as hell
The power plug goes into a transformer and then has about another 12 inches of a normal power cord so that it doesn't take up more than one plug. Very thoughtful
Con:
The button on the front doesn't do anything on my unit
All in all I love it.
Customer Review: Does not work well out of the box, but great with firmware update Summary: 5 Stars
As many have mentioned, the firmware that comes with the router is buggy out of the box. If you have an existing connection, I suggest that you download the latest firmware for the device BEFORE you set up your new router. It is somewhat frustrating downloading the update while your connection goes up and down.
However, once I did download and install the update, it works VERY well. If you have a WiFi N card (particularly one that supports the 5.8 Ghz band), it will scream. I am now getting 300 Mbps at about 100 feet away (on a different floor) with the 5.8 Ghz connection. 300 Mbps is about the highest my cable modem will provide so it is operating as if I connected via ethernet directly to the Cable modem (very nice)...
The 2.4 Ghz connection gets about 160 Mbps from the same location. Both are signficantly better than the WiFi G Router provided me (about 54 Mbps when the connection was excellent).
My other computer that still has a WiFi G card in it just receives after coverage as might be expected. It is about the same as with my old Linksys WRT54 router.
The NAS functionality is GREAT. Easy to use out of the box. Works very well when attaching a 1 TB Seagate exernal drive to the router.
Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase.
Customer Review: Pleasantly Satisfied Summary: 5 Stars
I decided to upgrade to wireless N to make room for the growing technology around the house. My old (2001) G-router wasn't cutting it with room-to-room streaming and media transfers. Also, I figured a newer model would complement my newer computers as far as reliability and system compatibility. To my surprise, the switch could not have been easier. The new software practically connects all the networked computers, wired or not, all on it's own. If there is any required input to connect a device, the link utility makes it a snap. In addition to the increased range and speed, I have not experienced an interuption or hiccup in the integrity of the network for the months that I've had this setup. Linksys hit the mark on this model.
For those who are contemplating the price difference between this model and the least expensive in the line, remember that for the extra cost you are buying future headroom. You might ask, "when am I going to use that feature?" 2 years from now, you may want to expand your utility of integrated features, or that feature could be the standard, and these routers aren't generationally upgradable through firmware. In other words, free updates won't get you the step-up model you might need down the line.
100% recommend this product. No glitches or drawbacks here.
Customer Review: First Impression -- Does What It Is Supposed To Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to replace a LinkSys WRT54GL wireless router because I needed the 1GB wired link speed and wanted both G and N wirelss. I did not need the USB storage support and have not tried to use it.
I did not use the CD to setup the router but did it manually. But before replacing the old router I walked through all of the settings pages and saved them to a directory on a hard drive. This came in handy in setting up MAC filtering.
The 2.4GZ range cannot be setup to handle just G and N. The options are:
Mixed
Wireless-B/G Only
Wireless-B Only
Wireless-G Only
Wireless-N Only
The WEP key generator only generates one key from the Passphrase.
Other than that it seems to work fine. I have a TiVo and three notebooks that connect via wireless on the same floor as the router and a repeater and a TiVo on the floor above the router but at the other end of the house and they are all talking to each other.
With the old router I would max out the network bandwidth at 100MBS when transfering files between wired machines. Transfering files between wired machines on this router only gets the network utilization up to 80% but that is still 800MBS. A 20GB file transfers in under four minutes.
Customer Review: Quick and Easy Set Up - A Major Upgrade Summary: 5 Stars
A pleasant surprise given many reviewers indicate complex or confusing set up. This router does exactly what linksys promises it will do; simultaneously dual band networking. I have my laptop with wirless N, on the "5" band, while the kids computers and wireless printer run on the 2.4 band. Also connected their PS3 with the included wire as it's near the router, so no need for wireless. I plan on connecting a back up drive in the near future.
So easy to set up and use, just followed the guidelines and software provided by linksys and voila! Also set up the encryption in no time. Thanks to a previous Amazon reviewer for the warning about trying the newer type of encryption when the household includes older computers.
The router has dramatically increased my home network's speed and functionality compared to my old linksis "g" router.
I have no professional computer/ networking background or experience, so just follow the instructions and you should enjoy the same experience.
Only two minor details to be aware of: 1. keep a small flash (thumb) drive handy to complete the setup on all networked computers. 2. The included linksys software "newtwork magic" required an immediate update in order to display correctly with Windows 7.
