Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router

Customer Review: Runs like a charm on my multi-OS/peripheral network!
Summary: 5 Stars

Frankly, I was VERY intimidated by all the negative reviews here about this router. I was looking at either this one or Apple's Airport Extreme N. But after some research and comparison I decided to go ahead and purchase this router due to its feature, brand name, and price value. And boy, am I glad I did!

Setup was a breeze. I was expecting to have a full blown range of problems as many reviewers here were explaining but it installed the software and drivers without a witch on my custom-built Windows XP Home system. Then, using the software, I had the network secured via WPA2 and I connected all my other computers and devices. Overall, this is what this baby is handling: 1 cable modem, 1 XP computer, 1 Vista computer, 2 Macs, 1 Macbook, a Nintendo Wii, a Nintendo DS, and a Zune. For the Nintendo DS and Zune, I placed it on the 2.4 Ghz G frequency as I have the older models which are not compatible with wireless N. Other than that, I have the rest of my computers on Wireless N on 5 ghz and the connections are BLAZING fast!

Many commented here about problems with the firmware until you update it. My network ran perfectly out of the box without any firmware update, but I still made the update just so I can be up-to-date on the latest fixes.

My new Linksys router has been running for about a month now without a single hitch. I am TOTALLY in love with it! Perhaps the problems that others were experiencing has been fixed now by Linksys via recent firmware updates. I HIGHLY recommend it!!!

Customer Review: REVIEW AND GUIDE FOR A NON TECHIE.
Summary: 5 Stars

To everyone looking for an upgrade from wireless G to wireless N router and also for people who badly need a little extra coverage of wireless signal, I had both the problems and I was going through different routers particularly linksys wrt160n, wrt320n and wrt610n & D link dir 655. Going through the reviews of these routers i had feelihg that linksys wrt610n and Dlink dir 655 are the best, but I narrowed down to linksys Wrt610n because it was more advanced even though there were a lot of critical reviews of its performance.

After recieving the package from amazon all I had to do was insert the cd that came with the package and the router was installed in 15 mins and working, abort the installation of LELA or if you Install it dont use it. It might be a bit confusing and it is not required to use the router. But the range was bad and the speeds were low. Probably this is the reason for most of the bad reviews. To get the full potential from this router go to the linksys link that I am adding right here.

[...]

Now my router not only gives me the extra range but also excellent speeds at the further end of the house were I never used to get a steady signal. IMPORTANT : MY LAPTOP HAS INBUILT N ADAPTER FROM DELL.

I havent used the usb port to connect the hard drive so I dont have anything to say about it right now.

Hope you will find my review and particularly the linksys link useful.

Customer Review: Very solid dual band router, but do not use the included software
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great dual band router. My windows desktop connects at a solid 270 mbps and it is a floor up and a room over from the router. We also have a macbook pro on that same connection (5ghz, wireless N) and we transfer files between them flawlessly and quickly. We keep the 2.4ghz band on wireless-g for visitors and an old dell laptop that does not have a wireless N connection.

Set up is very, very quick, but do not use the included software. Just navigate to the routers IP address (192.168.1.1 by default) and login (no user name, "admin" password by default (you'll want to change that)) and set up your wireless security, port forwarding, etc... manually. As with all Linksys products, the hardware is great (in my opinion) but the software sucks, so don't use it.

We also have a slingbox, a mac mini (HTPC), and a spare Ethernet cable all connected via hard wires. I have never measured the speed of the transfers when not using the wireless signal, but it is supposed to be a Gigabit switch. We've used it to transfer back ups between machines and it is pretty quick, but I'm not sure of the transfer speed.

This is a very solid dual band router and allows you to use the 5ghz wireless N signal, with max throughput, while still maintaining a 2.4ghz G signal for older computers or guests. This is the best router I've ever owned and I have been extremely satisfied with the connection speeds and ease of use.

Customer Review: Great Router
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using Linksys products for years. I had been using a WRT54GX ver. 2 router for almost 4 years, and started to have some problems with it loosing connection to my provider. I decided to upgrade, and after doing much research decided to get this router because it would easily provide a way to have a NAS and could act as a simple media server.

Setting the router up was a breeze, though setting up the NAS and media server was a little more difficult, but not bad at all.

After two months, this router seems to be working flawlessly. I have not had any dropped connections, the wifi connection seems strong and fast, and my PlayStation and DirecTV receiver both see the media server I set up. The only downside is that the media server cannot transcode video on the fly, so the devices you want to use must support the codecs of the video files you have on the server.

I would recommend this router to anyone, especially those wanting to easily set up a media server without having to have a separate computer for that purpose.

Addendum: After the NAS and media server were up and running for a while (using a Western Digital Essentials 1 TB), I started having some issues with it. After working on it for a week, trying to come up with a solution to get it to work correctly, I finally gave up. I would still recommend the router based on the wireless capabilities.

Customer Review: Very Pleased

I installed my WRT610N router a little over a month ago as a replacement for an old wired router and a WAP54G wireless access point. Let me start by saying that, frankly, I don't understand the bad reviews on this router as my experiences have been nothing but positive. The router that I received was downlevel on the firmware, so my first step was to bring the firmware current and that was performed with no problem. Since I am familiar with Linksys products, I did not use the LELA software for installation but rather opted for the web interface. In a matter of 30 minutes, I had fully configured the router, setup the WPA2 security, and installed an external disk to the router's USB port. In my installation I have wired as well as 2.4GHZ and 5.0GHZ wireless devices and after entering the encryption key into the wireless devices, all attached to the router with no problem. My 5.0GHZ adapter is attached to my DirecTv receiver two rooms away from the router and consistantly shows a 50% signal strength. While this could be a little better, I have not had a single connection drop and the data rate is very good.

I wanted to wait until it had been installed for a little while before I commented to see if any unusual problems occured, but so far nothing. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and I have no problem recommending this router to anyone that is looking to upgrade to wireless N.
