Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless RouterCustomer Review: This router is fantastic..It's all about configuration Summary: 5 Stars
I had to be strong and believe too much in Linksys to buy this router after all those bad reviews.
As a Linksys "forever user", I decided to take a chance: I could not understand why so different opinions for the same product and the most important: I could not accept the idea of buying a new router with those ugly antennas.
Why I bought this router? Simply because I needed Simultaneous Dual-N Band (2.4 and 5 gigahertz). If you don't need it now, think about the future and you also will need it.
If you want to know the pros of this product, simply read the Product Description from the manufacturer in this page: all that is true.
How to obtain the best results? You can be lucky and your router could be working great after opening your box. That was not my case: I have too many devices, all working in different bands + Wireless-N, G, and -B. I had to work really hard to find the best configuration. The most devices you have, the most work you probably will need.
This is my third week with this router. The 5 gigahertz band worked perfectly from the beginning. No change at all to the original configuration. All those connection drops I had at the beginning in the 2.4 gigahertz band, are not present anymore. If something changes, I will update this review.
P.S. I was obsessed with those reviews indicating the overheating of the unit. I don't know if was true or not, but I'm using my laptop cooler and the device is never hot. Conclusion: Many people here who complains about this product, in my opinion...that's because they never knew how to onfigure it to work.
Fourth week Update: I discovered the USB storage was not operative. I returned the router and received a new one. Now the USB storage works and is fantastic. Again, no connection drops at all. Tip: if you have multiple devices (mixed old and new devices) in your 2.4 gigahertz band, start trying with the WEP 64 security configuration as Linksys recommends.
Eighth week Update: No problems at all. Online gaming..fantastic.!!! Good decision. New Firmaware available..worked good.
Customer Review: Faster Than A Speeding Bullet Summary: 5 Stars
I had a D-Link wireless router before purchasing the WRT610N. It was fine until it started getting old. I couldn't get online one day and called my Internet Provider for support. He asked, "Do you have a router inline with the modem?" I said "Yes." He said, "Disconnect the power supply and plug it back in again. Tell me what happens." Well, I was instantly back online! But I kept noticing that I couldn't link to the D-Link's interface in my browser unless I unplugged and repluged the power supply.
I'm running a Mac Pro Duel-Core Intel Xeon and have a backup drive to restore lost or deleted files. It's an application called "Time Machine".
So, where am I going with this, you ask. Well, one day, the backup drive didn't show up on my desktop. I called the manufacturer for support and, guess what? They said, "It sounds like your power supply has gone bad." They sent me another one and by Jove that was the problem and it was solved!
I read all of the reviews on the Linksys WRT610N and It's my belief that those who complained about being disconnected might need to have Cisco replace your power supplies!
OK, now I'll review the Linksys router. I love it. It not only works fine - it's FAST. I regularly test the speed at [...]/speedtest and [...]. My D-Link would come in around 9,000kbps download. The Linksys has reached speeds as high as 23,000kbps! And the wireless feature for my cell phone has increased in distance and strength.
The only concern I had was with the setup. The paper instructions did not match what was on the CD. That's because I'm on a Mac. There's an application on the CD for PC users only. It doesn't even show up when inserted into a Mac. Since I already had a router, I easily hooked up the hardwires and then the rest of the installation, firewall and encryption were a cinch.
If you have a Mac and aren't familiar with routers, get some help. Other than that, I highly recommend this product!
Customer Review: Linksys WRT610N Dual Band Router Install (Quick and Easy) Summary: 5 Stars
This router was purchased to replace a Linksys "G" router which we had used for several years to connect our 2 PCs and HP All-in-One printer to our Comcast cable internet service (16 megabit max download speed).
Our objectives were to get more range for the wireless connections, and to hook up High Def video streaming from the internet to a newly acquired Bravia internet link that came with our Sony HD TV. As the new router supports 2 simultaneous frequency bands, I wanted the PCs and printer on 2.4GHz, and the video streaming to be the only application for the 5.0GHz band.
The Linksys Router install Wizard is very quick and easy to use, and will get you up and running in 15-20 minutes if you use the Wizards setup options, and are familiar with Routers so you know what you want. In my case, I wanted WPA2 encryption to secure the network itself, and password protection to control access to the Router itself. The Wizard will do that for you, just follow the steps.
The WRT610N is a very sophisticated product, and if you want to do your own setup by talking directly to the Router via a browser, you can do that, and set up things like MAC address filtering to restrict in an additional way the devices that can use your network.
I broke our project into 2 steps, and initially got the PCs and printer running wirelessly, and hooked up the Bravia internet link via a long ethernet cable to the Router. This allowed us to check out the video streaming and learn a bit about the internet link, without the need for the Bridge device.
This worked very well, and then I replaced the long cable with a Linksys Wireless N dual band bridge (WET610N) . This was quick and easy, using the Wizard that came with the bridge (separate review is posted covering that part of the project)
Customer Review: Solid performance and way better looking than my wrt54gs it replaced Summary: 5 Stars
Setup was typical Linksys, not too difficult at all. Had initial problem getting to internet, could not browse but setup said I was connected. Called my ISP and confirmed I was authenticating they advised perhaps my antivirus was at fault. Sure enough, the software firewall in my AV client saw the new connection as a threat. Reset the rules and was up and running, so I wonder how many people may be blaming the router on their connection problems in error. Many reviews mention this router gets hot but new (to me anyway) in this stock configuration manager I found a radio power setting. Set both radios to low power and still have excellent signal on both bands everywhere in my house which is good in two ways, 1 it limits the range at which my wireless is detectable and 2 it seems to be keeping the unit fairly cool. And file transfers between my workstation and server simply fly now on the built in gigabit switch which was my main reason for getting this to replace my still serviceable wrt54gs. My only complaint is Amazon's tracking notification, the number they provided me to track the shipment does not appear to be valid with any of the major carriers and on the website, despite the fact it arrived early today, it still says it is being picked up and estimated delivery date is still a week away! Whats up with your shipping AMAZON? (NOT that I am complaining about getting here so fast but I would still like to know about when to start actually looking for the package on my doorstep!) Also, being familiar with the product I opted to not install the LELA software that ships with it so I cannot comment on that. If you have ever configured any of the other linksys products you should have no trouble at all manually configuring this one, don't bother with LELA.
Customer Review: Linksys WRT610N (and WUSB600N) - a good choice Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered the Linksys WRT610N wireless dual-band gigabit router as replacement for my aging Netgear, after it became increasingly slow and required far more frequent resets. Even though I selected free (5 to 8 business days) shipping, the device arrived only two days after I received the email notification it was on its way (kudos Amazon, you never stop surprising me!).
Installation was a breeze; simply follow the quick install guide, plug in cables when told to, and the network was back up and running in 10, 15 minutes. Granted, I had to "hard" reset the cable modem rather than simply powering off and on, but that is due to an internal battery which nowadays becomes the norm (the battery retains settings so it requires poking with a paper-clip).
Similarly I had to reboot the NAS; it too wouldn't see the router (or vice versa), but once the NAS came up, tada, they were on speaking terms.
The router is performing much, MUCH faster than the Netgear (which is not to say Netgear is bad, it was just old and outdated, after serving me well for several years).
As part of my order I also got the Linksys WUSB600N adapter. There too, installation was very easy and flawless when following the QIG. Throughout the house a wireless connection is established instantaneously.
Basic configuration is done as part of the setup; more specific and detailed configuring is fairly simple, though I haven't gotten the MAC address filtering set up completely. I'm confident though I'll get it right; it's just that the Linksys interface and menus are different from what I'm used to.
So far, I'm very pleased with the router (and adapter). For what my opinion is worth, I can heartily recommend it.
