Customer Review: Excellent Router
Summary: 4 Stars

I have had this router for about a month now and it is honestly one of the best routers I have ever owned. My previous router was a WRVS4400N. While I loved this router the WRT600N has exceed it in performance in almost every way and beats the WRVS4400N in almost every way except two, and those are minor.

Setup: Having set up routers before in the past and for a living, I wanted to try something new. I had a family member who could barely turn on the computer to open the box and set up the router by just following the directions before I got home. Sure enough, they were up and online in about 15 minutes. When I came home, I tore down the system and reset it back to factory settings. I then set it up myself and had it completely configured the way I wanted it and all of the mac addressing in about 30 minutes without a single hitch. In a month's time I have not had a single issue or have had to reset.

Connectivity: 0 issues. Everything from game systems to specialized devices can see and connect. I also have managed to keep a constant broadcast strength even at the furthest parts of my house. The dual band allows for multiple setups so older devices actually have an easier time than newer devices in terms of wireless security. Before I use to have to do a WPA/TKIP setup now I can run WPA2 and a WPA/TKIP. Also the Dual Band allows for a great fail over due to interference. I use to have issues with using my laptop in the kitchen if I was cooking food in the microwave. I no longer have that issue.

Security: This laptop does do it all (WPA/WPA2/etc.) However I do have one gripe. The VPN is possible with this laptop, but not as easy to set up compared to the WRVS4400N. The only other gripe that I have, but this only a personal gripe is that the log on account can not be renamed, Only the password.

Customer Review: Great upgrade to 802.11n
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been a Linksys user since my first CableTV internet connection. Linksys / Cisco still makes a great product.

Before I began, I saved my old Linksys router configuration to a file on my PC. I also printed out many of the web admin pages containing configuration info.

WRT600N Setup was very simple. I unplugged my old router, ran the new cables and plugged in the 600N. Unfortunately, the EasySetup CD did not work properly in my PC.

The 600N has the same web management interface as my old WRT54G box. So I ran IE to http://192.168.1.1/ and was back on track. I entered all the old settings from the printed pages made earlier and saved the configuration.

My cable modem refused to let my PCs access the internet. Remembering advice from my cable co. I unplugged the power from both the 600N and the cable modem for a short time, then plugged them back in. After that, the cable modem sent the correct IP network settings to the 600N and I was Googling like a madman again.

NEW Stuff: The 600N has 2 wireless bands, with it my older wireless devices (a PDA, cell phone and printer) can connect wirelessly using 802.11g. At the same time, I get faster connection speeds using 802.11n with my laptop. Same network, with different security keys so it's as secure as I can make it.

Wireless N makes watching video much more enjoyable - few to no pauses in the video. Response time for shared folders is almost instantaneous.

I've read that some Mac users have had wi-fi connection dropping problems when using the 600N. I've had the 600N running for 1 month now with no connection problems from my Macbook Pro.

The 600N is one step in my Home Media system project. I think this was the right choice.

Customer Review: Good router but may be too many features to be useful
Summary: 4 Stars

Purchased because needed extended range to reach a computer in my basement (3 floors down from my router) and I wanted to get a gigabit router. I also liked the storage link function. Overall, the router performs great. I don't get the blazing speeds in the basement, but I do get connection where my old G router did not quite make it there. I also believe that moving my router may also increase performance. Setup was very easy moving from one linksys router to another, however I would say that the wizard doesn't do everything it should...

I also like the interface (with the exception of storage link noted below) and it is VERY easy to set up. I use a VoIP phone and it was simple to set up the phone for QoS and that has worked flawlessly. (Another big reason for purchasing the phone.) You can set QoS by MAC address, IP address, ports, etc. Very few people use this function and you definitely should.

I'm disappointed with the storage link. I'm familiar with technology and disk management and I have yet to figure out the Storage Link interface. There is NO documentation with the unit, and very little on this feature online. I know that if I spend some time with it, I will be able to find instructions, but a SimpleShare device I purchased a few years ago didn't require reading manuals (yuck!).

I am also disappointed that, at the time of purchase, only notebook cards were supported with the dual radios. I don't know if this would have increased my range (don't think so) so for now, I think I would purchase the less expensive non UltraRange version of this with only the one radio.

Received today 06/13/2008. Would not recognize my existing internet connection with the included software but that was fixed by going online and downloading the easylink advisor. Won't go into detail as I see it has been well covered by others.

However, I would like to comment on the speed and distance. I'm only using the 2.4Ghz "N" radio portion of the WRT600N but it covers both stories of my home and will even extend to the detached mother-in-law quarters about 120' from where the router is located. All of this at 3-5 bars. It does drop to 2 bars at my neighbors front porch.

Wireless speed 5' from the router is 130mbps and this increases as I move down stairs into the kitchen to 270mbps. Much much better than the 11mbps that I was getting from my old Linksys BEFW11S4 with 802.11b technology.

My wired desktop speed increased dramatically from the old router. I use Comcast cable service and MySpeed PC VoIP Advanced Edition for checking my internet speed (This is a purchased program). I use a fast Comcast service with a normal download speed of around 8mbps and an upload speed in excess of 4mbps. This has increased with the installation of the new router to 27mbps download and still at 4mbps for the upload speed. This difference is based on the last speed test that I did with the old router about 30 days ago. This difference is real unless Comcast has done something on their end to increase the download speed of my service in the last 30 days.

Customer Review: Overall a Good Router
Summary: 4 Stars

Overall I have to say that this router, being the first wireless router I've bought, does exceptionally well. While the price is a bit much as of this writing, you get what you pay for, in this case a wireless router that lets 802.11g cards enjoy the most they can while the 802.11n cards can perform to their uttermost potential. Using the setup from the Linksys CD made setting up the router painless and a breeze, but at the end of the setup, it told me that it had not recognized or found any internet connection. This was quickly resolved when I went to Linksys' support site, which gave clear and concise instructions as to what to do to resolve the issue, so if you do come up to problems using this router, don't hesitate to go to Linksys's website first to see if the problem to your issue is there (it was for me). After this issue was resolved, I was able to set up the network further through a web browser. Granted, the standard user may not know what all to configure here, but I am sure that a Google search or a look at Linksys's website would give them clear directions as to what to do. I am overall satisfied with the product and completely recommend it to those who have some computers with 802.11n cards and some with 802.11g cards. I look forward to buy another Linksys wireless router in the near future.
