I recently purchased the Linksys wrt54gs router upon the recommendation of our firm's IT manager. We use this same router in our business office. I am using this one in a 3000 sq ft home and the router covers the entire house with an "excellent" to "very good" reception (54mps). It does take a little while to hook up. AND, this is important - it is much easier to hook up the router using a program download from the linksys.com web site. The program will walk you through the set up process and program the router for your system. I figure Linksys created the program to reduce all the time their technical people were spending with people like me. In fact their technical support recommended the program instead of the cd. So skip the cd that comes with the router and don't mess with the "easy set up button"; just use the free download. Also, if you're a novice like me you need to know that you program the router using your internet browser. The address is in the manual. Finally, be sure to set up the security features otherwise your wireless network will be open for anyone within range to connect.Customer Review: Happy camper.

My router had to be 3 things; An internet connection sharing device, a switch and a wireless access point. Based upon these demands I decided to buy the WRT54GS.
(Although the WRT54G costs a few bucks less then this one, I never considered it, it's just a few bucks and I am going to use the device for years, so I advice you to spend a few bucks more for the small advantages, i.e. double memory for embedded software and higher network performance because of a bigger cache). But enough about that.
The thing works. It just does.
Installing was a dream, default configuration via the software, which checked my internet connection type and configured the router automatically.
Wireless range is excellent. Network speed is high. (I use cat 5e btw). computers plug into my network and are totally connected and have immideatly connection to the internet. wireless excryption is easy to set up. Configuration web interface is very clear and full of options.
I have nothing but good things about this device. I would recommend this to anyone.

I think the WRT54GS is a very good product in all respects (Easy to install, stable, great security and network analysis features, fast, ) and very stable. I have used this product 24/7 for about a month now in both LAN and Wireless modes with no problems at all (No resets). The install was very easy and quick and took five minutes (I consider myself to have savvy above average computer technical skills, but not an expert and I don't work in the computer industry)to get everything up and running in both modes following the quick start CD that was included. The unit arrived well packed from Amazon and on time. The software was one revision behind and was easy to upgrade from Linksys web site.
I recently added CAT 6A (10 Gigabit rated) wiring and did consider a 802.11N Gigabit router but was a little concerned that technology is still expensive, not widely available, and not very stable at this point. The WRT54GS unit is the next best alternative until these issues are resovled. Highly recommended product from my perspective.

I have been using the WRT54GS Wireless router for about a month now and it has worked without any glitches. A few items to note about the router:
1) It supports several encryption protocols namely: WEP, WPA and WPA2. After reading that WEP is vulnerable (see http://www.cs.umd.edu/~waa/wireless.html) it was important that the router supports WPA.
2) Several parameters default to sensible settings such as automatically configuring the router to use DHCP.
3) The signal strength is very good over a wide area (for example the router is located in the basement, the signal is excellent on the first floor and is very good on the second floor)
4) Connecting to various wireless devices is seemless. For example I did not have any issues connecting Sony PSP, Sony PS3 and various Laptops to the network.
5) Configuring the router is a snap using a web interface.
6) Suppressing transmission of SSID(another vulnerability) is also very easy.
Overall I am very pleased with the product.

I bought this to replace an old Linksys wireless - B router that I had for several years. I had flawless execution with my original Linksys and decided to stay with the brand and upgrade.
I was not disappointed. It was basically unplug the old one and plug in the new one. In less than 10 minutes the new wireless - G was up and running with my DSL modem.
I have 3 laptops running wireless from it. I also added a network printer to make it wireless. Worked like a charm.
The router has been running now for about a month with no interruptions. I do see an improvement in the speed though not sure it is really as dramatic as advertised.
The range is just as good .. maybe better ... than my old wireless - B. The router is on the second story of the house. I can take a laptop and go anywhere in the house, including the basement, and can sit on the front porch, back deck or back yard.
Can't ask for more than that. Highly recommend.
