Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster

Customer Review: Better, stronger, faster than before...
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had Linksys routers off and on over the years. I changed frequently due to ferreting out bugs with my connection, which has slowly improved due to various reasons. Most recently I had a Netgear WGT624 (108Mbps) which seemed to have a fast connection with the accompanying wireless cards. However, I was frequently getting dropped off the network at which time I would have to do a router reboot - even with the latest firmware installed.

After reading the reviews here and on www.dslreports.com, it seems I am not the only one with this problem. Now, since this router has received rave reviews, I figured I would try out Linksys again. I did, and am very happy with it so far. I have not had a drop within the last 24 hours.

The only caveat I have had with Linksys is how unbelievibly ugly the hardware is. Why they keep using a dark blue Cisco box is beyond me. I spend quite a bit of money in order to keep things looking clean and consistant in my work area and this box sticks out like a blue flaming sore thumb in my sea of black/gray hardware. They need to take design lessons from Netgear, they would sell more routers.

Customer Review: Can't believe how easy it was to set up!!!!!

I got my Linksys at a far inferior website than Amazon-regrets but I'm back. Anyway, first I didn't know you needed to have a speed boost adapter to make the speed boost adapter on this router work. Just to save you time and "restocking" fees some rip off companies may charge you. Get the Speed boost adapter.
The set up was soooo easy, I couldn't believe it!
I am not exaggerating! I popped in the cd for the router, I got the instructions. Got the password, security settings down and it did the rest. I just plugged in the adapter to my other computer and Presto!!!! The internet was on in seconds. I was truly amazed. Kept thinking, I had to of done something wrong... that was too easy! But I didn't. It works.
I have cable internet and the speeds on this computer that has the adapter in it works very well and downloads very fast most of the time. It has it's slow times, on very little occassions, but that has more to do with internet traffic than the adapter/booster. You have to be realistic.
Anyway, love it, glad I got it. Been using it for more than 3 weeks and I am extremely happy with it.

Customer Review: Its worth the installation headache

Yea... it was a pain to setup. Especially because I'm using AOL DSL. I tried the setup disk and everything seemed to be going great but in the end, the computer didn't recognize my modem. I looked online at Linksys.com and under support I typed in AOL and then it showed a list of Q&A. I read a couple of them and tried it. I figured out that the instructions were a little off and eventually got it all working in just under 3 hours. If I were to do it again, I think I could set it all up in like 20 minutes.

As far as performance, My Sony Viao PCG-Z1VA has a built-in 802.11b but I wanted the best performance possible so I got the Linksys WPC54GS Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with SpeedBooster to match. Connection to the web from my laptop is unbelievable. Its as if I was on the desktop, wired directly in the modem. I ran some speed tests and it shows that I'm on par with the desktop.

My signal strength is around 80% throughout the entire house. The transfer rate is consistently around 125.0 Mbps.

Its as if the notebook is just another drive in my desktop. I couldn't ask for better performance.

Customer Review: It worked right out of the box

When my wired router went out i decided to upgrade to wireless, with the aniticipation of getting a laptop. I first bought a D-link wireless router (my wired one was a D-link and was happy with it). After setting it up i did a internet speed test and was shocked. i was getting about 300kbs. I was normally over 2000kps. I called d-link and they told me that was the nature wireless. I did not believe them. I then bought the Linksys. I installed the router, then installed the ethernet card. I then turned on the computer to install the software. Running on windows XP i did not get that far. It recognized the card and routher and i was on the surfing internet in about one minute withoug loading the software. I called tech support to make sure i still did not need to load the software and they told me that it would not be necessary. Then on the speed test i was back up to 2000kps. I now have a laptop and tested the reception by walking down my street. after about 200 feet from my house and my neighbors wondering what i was doing, i was still getting a signal. I highly recommend this router.

Customer Review: Nice upgrade.

I had been using a Linksys 802.11b wireless router for my mixed (wired and wireless) network for the last 3 years. The old router was suffering from frequent lock-ups and required rebooting almost every week. Software upgrades helped not at all.
I decided to upgrade to 802.11g and I'm glad I did. I simply disconnected the old router and plugged this one in and presto! I was up and running. As I don't use encryption (too far from the street to be worried), setup was about a minute.
Happily, my Linksys Wireless Signal Booster (WSB24) works fine with the WRT54GS, as do my Linksys 7 dBi TNC high gain antennae.
Those devices in the house that are 802.11b-only compatible work fine. The only exception has been my Kingston wireless Internet finder, which doesn't see this network at all.
Folks around the house have noted much better speed and unexpectedly, better range. Our previous problems with stalling have vanished.
I would add that since going to a 100% Linksys system (modem too), life has been much better. I think this approach makes sense for whichever brand you prefer.
