Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBoosterCustomer Review: Best wireless G rounter and access point Summary: 5 Stars
As a router:
I bought this product five years ago to access internet in several devices at home as this one had best reviews among routers in Amazon.com. So I won't bother telling you how good it was as a router.
As a access point:
But last year when I moved to new house, I needed to widen my network signal range for the house. And an access point was also necessary for my internet phone and desktop computer that are located separately from my router (due to strange cable setup in my house) and that require wired connection to AP. So I first thought about selling this old router on ebay or something, and then buying new N router and access point that might cost around $200-300. With little internet research, I found out that I could use WRT54GS as a wireless access point with firmware update. After buying D-Link DIR-655 N router, an hour of updating firmware and setting the access point, there was $100 perfect and new network system for my house. It's been a year since I use it as an access point. I have never had any problem with it.
In conclusion, if you are considering wireless G, I strongly recommend this product as a router and access point for its reliability and versatility.
Customer Review: Better than the rest!! Summary: 5 Stars
Replaced my old WRK54G with this unit. The WRK54G was dropping connectivity about 2-3 times per day, so I decided to buy a USED WRT54GS for $25 bucks. I mirrored the settings on the new one and swapped them out. Now, I have no dropped connections as of yet. I can watch my Roku with no problems and in 4 days, I've had zero dropped connections. Before, my laptops and my Roku would lose connectivity and I'd have to unplug my router and plug it back in.
I cannot say enough good things about the "tried & true" WRT54GS. I'm buying a backup one just to have laying around in case something happens to this one.
None of the new "N" routers can even compare to this thing. The bad thing about "N" routers is that they run to the slowest connection that you have attached to it. so if you have one wireless "G" device connected and one Wireless "N", it will only run at "G" speeds. In my case I have one Macbook that has a "G" card that is on 24-7 and another laptop running a "N" card that is not normally on all the time. So I can only run at "G" speeds anyway. Therefore, why should I waste money on an "N" router?

Linksys WRT54G (and variants WRT54GS, WRT54GL, and WRTSL54GS) is a Wi-Fi capable residential gateway from Linksys. The device is capable of sharing Internet connections amongst several computers via 802.3 Ethernet and 802.11b/g wireless data links.
The WRT54G is notable for being the first consumer-level network device that had its firmware source code released to satisfy the obligations of the GNU GPL. This allows programmers to modify the firmware to change or add functionality to the device. Several third-party firmware projects provide the public with enhanced firmware for the WRT54G.
The WRT54GS is nearly identical to WRT54G except for additional RAM, flash memory, and SpeedBooster software. Versions 1 to 3 of this router have 8MB of flash memory. Since most third parties' firmware only use up to 4MB flash, a JFFS2 based r/w filesystem can be created and used on the remaining 4MB free flash. This allows for greater flexibility of configurations and scripting, enabling this small router to both load balance multiple ADSL lines (multi homed) or to be run as a hardware layer 2 load balancer (with appropriate third party firmware).[
Customer Review: Excellent and Easy to Install Summary: 5 Stars
This is my third router in 2 weeks. I tried Bliss, and D-Link, both of which were a pain to install, and the wireless worked sporadically at best. Read: worked once than never to connect wirelessly to the router again.
A friend at work had a Linksys router, and recommended it. I ordered the Wireless-g with Speedbooster router and the notebook card. They arrived the next day.
The installation was flawless -- the router was working within a couple minutes. It actually took longer for the computer to go through its regular re-boot than it did to install the router.
The notebook card was the same. Flawless and worked within minutes. Again, the regular re-boot sequence took longer than the install.
These work seamlessly -- not only on the desktop machine plugged into the router, but I have excellent reception all over the house with the notebook computer. Finally a networking company that steps up to the plate when it comes to a home network. Congrats to Cisco!
After my first two router experiences, I am completely sold on Linksys -- I couldn't be happier with the ease of install and continued performance.
Customer Review: No complaints Summary: 5 Stars
I was using a D-Link DI-614 with other 802.11b hardware with my DSL in a rural location with no other wi-fi in the neighborhood and was getting spotty coverage on the other side of my small house (50feet, 3 walls), so I decided to upgrade. I had a WPC54GS card on my laptop from a year ago, when SpeedBooster first came out, so I decided to go with the WRT54GS, to avoid having to upgrade everything. I got a decent deal on a new one on eBay for $48 shipped. Installation was straightforward. I'm a little better than a novice, having installed a Netgear system in the past in my home and for my dad, as well as my previous D-link. The Linksys software is as straightforward or more so than the previously mentioned. The WPA encryption set up without a problem. Connection strength has been fine, able to use my DSL bandwidth of 1.5Mbps without problems. I decided to go with a WUSB54GS to network my wife's desktop, also without problems. I intentionally have an older 900Mhz cordless and 5.8Ghz cordless to avoid interference with 802.11g and have not experienced any problems. I know Speedbooster is no longer state of the art, but it has worked out just fine for me.
